Your Travel Guide to Makati as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Makati from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For Filipino travelers, reaching Makati from within the Philippines is a well-trodden path, with multiple convenient options available. If you're flying in from major hubs like Cebu or Davao, your destination will be Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Manila. From NAIA, The E-Hotel Makati is a manageable taxi or ride-sharing trip away, typically costing between PHP 300-500 and taking 30-60 minutes depending on traffic.

Booking your flight to Manila through Traveloka can often secure competitive fares, especially if booked in advance.

If you prefer overland travel from Luzon cities or even from the Visayas via ferry connections, bus travel is a common and economical choice. Major bus terminals in Metro Manila serve routes from various provinces. For instance, buses from Northern Luzon often arrive at terminals in Cubao or Pasay, from where you can take a taxi, ride-sharing service, or the MRT/LRT to reach Makati.

A bus ticket from Baguio to Manila might cost around PHP 500-800, with a travel time of about 5-7 hours. Similarly, from Southern Luzon, buses heading to Metro Manila will drop you off at terminals like Buendia (LRT Gil Puyat), which is relatively close to Makati.

For those driving their own vehicles, Makati is accessible via major road networks. From North Luzon, you'll likely use the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and then connect to the Metro Manila Skyway or EDSA to reach Makati. From South Luzon, the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) is your primary route, with connections to Skyway or local roads leading into the city. Toll fees can add up, and travel times are highly dependent on traffic, which can be substantial during peak hours.

For example, a drive from Clark, Pampanga, could take 1.5 to 3 hours, with toll costs around PHP 300-500 one way.

Best Time to Visit Makati

Makati, like much of Metro Manila, experiences a tropical climate with distinct wet and dry seasons. The dry season, generally from November to April, is considered the most pleasant time to visit. During these months, you can expect sunny days with lower humidity, making it ideal for exploring the city's outdoor attractions, shopping districts, and dining scene. Temperatures typically range from the mid-20s to low-30s Celsius.

This period, especially from December to February, is also when many Filipinos take their leave, so while the weather is great, expect more crowds and potentially higher accommodation prices.

The wet season runs from May to October. During this time, you'll encounter more frequent rainfall, often in the form of heavy afternoon downpours. While this might disrupt outdoor plans occasionally, it also brings fewer tourists and can mean better deals on flights and hotels. For budget-conscious travelers or those who don't mind a bit of rain, visiting during the shoulder months of May or October can be a good compromise.

The city remains active, and indoor attractions like malls and museums are always available, regardless of the weather.

For a balanced experience, consider visiting during the transition months. Late October or early November can offer pleasant weather as the rainy season subsides, with fewer crowds than the peak holiday season. Similarly, late February or early March provides good weather before the intense heat of April and May sets in. Ultimately, the "best" time depends on your priorities: perfect weather for outdoor exploration, fewer crowds, or the best value for your travel budget.

Food and Dining Near Makati — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Makati is a culinary melting pot, but for Filipino travelers, exploring local flavors is always a priority. One dish you absolutely must try is **Kare-Kare**. This rich stew features oxtail, tripe, and vegetables in a thick, savory peanut sauce, traditionally served with bagoong (fermented shrimp paste) on the side. The combination of the creamy, nutty sauce with the tender meat and the salty kick of bagoong is a true Filipino comfort food experience.

Look for it in traditional Filipino restaurants in Makati, where it's often a staple.

Another essential taste of the Philippines is **Adobo**. While variations exist across the archipelago, a classic chicken or pork adobo, braised in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns, is a fundamental Filipino dish. Its tangy, savory, and slightly sweet profile is deeply satisfying. Many eateries in Makati will offer their own take on this national dish, from simple home-style versions to more gourmet interpretations.

For something lighter yet equally flavorful, **Sinigang** is a must. This sour soup, typically made with tamarind broth, is brimming with meat (pork, beef, or fish) and an assortment of vegetables like kangkong (water spinach), radish, and tomatoes. The distinct sourness is incredibly refreshing, especially on a warm day. It’s a dish that evokes a sense of home for many Filipinos and is evidence of the country's love for balanced flavors.

Don't leave Makati without trying **Laing**. This Bicolano specialty consists of dried taro leaves simmered in coconut milk with chilies and sometimes small pieces of dried fish or shrimp. The result is a creamy, slightly spicy, and deeply flavorful dish that’s often served as a side. It offers a different texture and a unique spicy kick that’s characteristic of the Bicol region.

Finally, for a sweet ending or a midday treat, seek out **Halo-Halo**. This iconic Filipino dessert is a delightful concoction of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube (purple yam) ice cream. It’s a colorful and refreshing mix of textures and flavors, perfect for cooling down after a day of exploring Makati's bustling streets. Many cafes and restaurants offer their own versions, each with a unique presentation.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Makati

Filipino culture in Makati, as in much of Metro Manila, is characterized by warmth, hospitality, and a strong sense of community. While Makati is a modern business district, traditional values often shine through in interactions. Greetings are important; a simple "Magandang umaga/hapon/gabi" (Good morning/afternoon/evening) goes a long way. Filipinos are generally polite and respectful, and maintaining this demeanor will ensure positive interactions. When visiting religious sites or more traditional establishments, dressing modestly is advisable.

Safety in Makati is generally good, especially in well-trafficked areas like those surrounding The E-Hotel Makati. However, like any major city, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings. Keep valuables secure and out of sight, especially in crowded places or public transport. Be cautious of petty theft and avoid displaying expensive items openly. If you encounter any issues, the local police can be reached at 117 for emergencies. For non-emergencies, local police hotlines are available.

It's also advisable to use reputable taxi services or ride-sharing apps booked through your phone for transportation.

For navigating Makati and staying connected, several apps are invaluable for Filipino travelers. Grab is essential for booking rides (cars and motorcycles), food delivery, and even grocery shopping, offering convenience and transparent pricing. Google Maps is indispensable for navigation, providing real-time traffic updates and public transport information. GCash or Maya are highly recommended for mobile payments, allowing you to pay for goods and services easily without needing large amounts of cash.

These apps can significantly simplify your stay and enhance your experience in the city.

There’s a peculiar “stench” along the hallways especially in the mornings.

I wouldn’t recommend this place for families or groups of friends. The atmosphere is more tacky than welcoming, and the overall experience left a lot to be desired. It’s pretty noisy at night—both from the street and from neighboring rooms. You can easily hear everything happening through the walls, which made it difficult to relax or sleep. There are also no connecting rooms, which is a big issue for families or friends who want to stay close. On top of that, you're paying for a place that definitely isn’t worth the price. If you're looking for a peaceful, comfortable stay without wasting unnecessary money, this isn’t the spot.

Greeted with warm smiles and accommodating service. Room was cozy and perfect for a relaxing stay. Location is convenient and easily accessible to nearby malls. This hotel is an absolute 10/10! If only I could give a 100 stars, I definitely would! (Bonus: One of the hotel staff is really charming, just like a Korean oppa in a kdrama! Super duper crush 😍)

It was hell staying at this hotel. My time was waisted from the initial hotel,The Beacon, we had to transfer to E hotel, then they charge us for $35 (P2,000) for children as extra person staying. They told us to pay cash & they didn't give us the receipt. The room we stayed had so many issues from aircon leaks, shower was dripping, the whole floor flooded while showering,my 8 yrold almost slipped. There's no rag for the shower & the whole bathroom had molds and stains and open holes on the ceiling. No AC on the hallway. Then they transferred us to a down grade room, still with AC leaks, ok with no tub but the ceiling is broken, tiles have dark stains and molds even the lavatory. Then my kids and I got insect bites last night. I can show all pictures when necessary. The internet was limited to 4 guests and it was cut short, the maintenance was not there. The Manager is on leave and there's no supervisor too;( so frustrating!!!

I like that it's near everything, the malls, the banks and restaurants. The only thing that is not likeable is the noise from the cars that pass by the hotel. Seems like the surrounding is not as clean as expected because it's in the Makati area. But overall the stay in this hotel is pleasant and worthy enough to let you stay there again.

From the outside you would never expect what is inside. We we amazed at the cleanliness and the appearance of the property. Five stars for the property and ten ( if possible) for the friendly and accommodating staff.

This is without the worst hotel experience of my life. I rented for a friend that they turned away because the friend didn't have a credit card even though hotels.com approved it. The friend was pregnant, had gotten stuck at the bus station, had to walk there in the rain, and ended up having to sleep on the bus station floor because of the arrogance of the staff. Then the following day the staff openly lied to hotels.com saying that the person never even showed up despite them identifying to her that they had her reservation. I have contacted an attorney regarding this issue both towards the hotel and hotels.com for their lack of safety and concern. As an educated and even minded american, I am not prone to over dramatization, but I genuinely hope that the something negative happens to this hotel and to hotels.com because of the way they dehumanized, offended, and harassed both myself and my educated pregnant friend. If you use this hotel then you are saying that you are ok with sexual, physical, and gender harassment happening. If you have children and stay here willingly, then you are saying that you don't care if harassment or abuse happens to them by others.

One star for its strategic location near malls, two star for cool AC and clean towels. I will be talking about the room we stayed. Too dark, no windows, one bed for three people? Wut? Front desk said it was a queen bed, but it was only a double bed. Carpet is muddy, smells old, lift is old. Not for staycation. I hope this hotel won't appear when people search for a staycation place.

Air Conditioning ( coldness) not so satisfying. CR- better if we have bidet and please provide toilet paper. Also, costumer will be happier if you have complimentary water and coffee . Thank you.

Stayed in a room with 3 queen beds. Carpet stinks and tile floors in the bathroom had some mildew. TV in the room didn’t work despite multiple attempts. Very UNRELIABLE wi-fi. The entire hotels looks very run down. On the upside, it is in a very good location just across from the Ayala malls/ Greenbelt. Parking is virtually non-existent— they only had 3 parking slots available for the entire hotel’s guests. Overall, would NOT recommend thos place. Stayed here because we had had some drinks, and didn’t want to drive back home drunk. Just slept in for a couple hours and left right away, thank goodness. Hotel staff were friendly and prompt, but not enough to make up for the hotel’s shortcomings/ faults.
