Your Travel Guide to Coron as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Coron from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

Traveling to Coron from Manila and other major Philippine cities is primarily done via air. The nearest airport is Francisco B. Reyes Airport (USU) in Busuanga, which serves Coron. Several airlines operate flights from Manila (MNL) to USU, with travel times typically around 1 hour and 15 minutes. Fares can vary significantly depending on the season and how far in advance you book, but expect prices to range from PHP 3,000 to PHP 8,000 for a round trip if you book flight tickets in advance.

From other major cities like Cebu (CEB) or Clark (CRK), direct flights to Coron might be less frequent, often requiring a layover in Manila. It's always best to check flight schedules on platforms like Traveloka for the most up-to-date information and to compare prices. For those seeking a more adventurous and budget-friendly journey, overland travel combined with a ferry is an option, though significantly longer. This usually involves traveling to El Nido or directly to Coron via ferry from Puerto Princesa or other ports, which can take many hours.

For travelers coming from areas not serviced by direct flights, consider flying into Puerto Princesa (PPS), Palawan's capital, and then taking a van or bus to Coron. Van transfers from Puerto Princesa to Coron typically take around 5-6 hours and cost approximately PHP 1,000-1,500. This route offers a chance to see more of Palawan but requires a substantial time commitment.

Best Time to Visit Coron

The ideal time to visit Coron generally falls within the dry season, which runs from November to May. During these months, you can expect sunny skies, calm seas, and lower chances of rainfall, making it perfect for island hopping, diving, and other water activities that Coron is famous for. The peak tourist season is typically from December to April, when weather conditions are most favorable, but also when crowds are largest and prices for accommodation and tours tend to be higher.

For travelers looking to avoid the largest crowds and potentially find better deals on accommodation and flights, the shoulder months of November and May can be excellent choices. While there's a slightly higher chance of occasional rain showers, the weather is still generally good, and you'll experience a more relaxed atmosphere. The period from June to October marks the wet season, characterized by more frequent rainfall and potential typhoons, which can sometimes lead to tour cancellations due to rough seas.

Filipino travelers planning their trip should consider their personal preferences for weather and crowd levels. If you thrive in sunny conditions and don't mind sharing popular spots with other tourists, the dry season is your best bet. If you prefer a quieter experience and are flexible with your itinerary in case of weather changes, the shoulder months or even the early part of the wet season can offer a rewarding visit.

Food and Dining Near Coron — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Coron offers a delightful culinary scene that reflects its coastal location and Filipino heritage. One dish you absolutely must try is fresh seafood, often grilled or steamed, showcasing the bounty of the surrounding waters. Look for restaurants serving *sinigang na isda* (fish sour soup) or *kinilaw* (Filipino ceviche), prepared with the freshest catch of the day. These dishes highlight the natural flavors of the seafood and are staples in Filipino cuisine.

Another local favorite is *Adobong Pusit* (squid adobo), a savory dish where squid is braised in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns. The tender squid combined with the rich, tangy sauce is a flavor combination that resonates well with the Filipino palate. You can find this dish in many local eateries and restaurants throughout Coron Town Proper, offering a taste of home-style cooking.

Don't leave Coron without trying *La Paz Batchoy*, a hearty noodle soup originating from Iloilo but popular across the Philippines. This flavorful soup, typically made with pork, shrimp, and various toppings, is perfect for a comforting meal, especially after a long day of exploring. Many local carinderias and restaurants in Coron serve their own versions of this beloved Filipino comfort food.

For a sweet treat, seek out local delicacies like *Halo-Halo*, a popular Filipino dessert made with shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, and topped with leche flan and ube ice cream. It’s the perfect way to cool down on a hot day. Exploring the local markets and smaller eateries will often lead you to these authentic culinary experiences that are integral to the Filipino travel experience.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Coron

When visiting Coron, it's important to be mindful of local customs and etiquette. Filipinos are generally known for their hospitality and respect for elders. Always greet people politely, and if invited into someone's home, it's customary to bring a small gift. Dress modestly when visiting religious sites. Understanding and respecting these cultural nuances will enhance your interactions with the local community.

Safety in Coron is generally good, especially in the town proper and popular tourist areas. However, like any travel destination, it's wise to take precautions. Keep your valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded places. It’s advisable to use reputable tour operators for island hopping and water activities. For emergencies, know the local police and hospital contact numbers, which can usually be obtained from your hotel's front desk.

For a smoother trip, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable map application like Google Maps is crucial for navigation, especially if you plan to explore on foot or rent a motorbike. Translation apps can be helpful, though English is widely spoken in tourist areas. For booking tours and activities, the Traveloka app is indispensable, offering a wide selection of options and secure payment methods. Our room wasn't ready on time and we had to sit around and wait an extra 2 hours. They seemed to be short staffed and the restaurant food was not good. The pool and pool area is small and there are no elevators, so you have to drag your own bags up the stairs, as there are no staff to assist. The hotel and room were very clean and updated. The a/c in our room was so weak we had trouble sleeping and the tv was so complicated, that we gave up trying to use it. The location is okay, it is about a 5-7 minutes walk into town (very hilly).

I was in Coron for a snorkeling break. The Vienna hotel did what they could to ensure our break was stress free and that everything worked well. They handled our tour reservations without a hitch. Everything worked like clockwork. Pickup and drop off from/to the airport were likewise on time and went without a hitch. Friendly front desk, and other staff members made our stay really comfortable.

The property is located on a hill so be prepared to walk up as some Tuk Tuk’s cannot make it up the incline. The hotel itself is good but we had major A/C issues during our stay, to the point we were all sweating in our sleep. The pool isn’t as grand as the pictures make it seem. The best part of the hotel is the rooftop to get an AMAZING view of coron in sunset and their rooftop happy hour is very hard to beat price wise. It was an alright stay but we expected a bit more from the property and service. I would recommend for a short stay, just make sure the A/C continuously works for your room during your stay.

Very disappointing stay. Hotel is still being built. The quality of the build is appalling. Blind Freddy would do a better job of the tiling, and his uncle Dave made it worse by trying to cover it up. Electric switches don't all work, and wires left exposedGirl on reception was very nice and tried hard. Pool has some green tinges around the bottom, so not so keen on putting our head under. Location is OK, but a steep hill to walk if you don't take a tuk tuk. Wouldn't return or recommend.

Formal Complaint Review I am extremely disappointed with my recent experience in Coron, specifically with Vienna Hotel. We initially booked this hotel because of its advertised bay view, proximity to the beach, and its location just a few miles away from key attractions. However, upon arrival, we were shocked to be taken to a completely different hotel, Venus Hotel, located in the town center—nowhere near the water and without any bay view. This was an unacceptable bait-and-switch. The new location not only failed to meet our expectations, but it also added unnecessary expenses to our trip. Since Venus Hotel is far from the places we wanted to visit, we had to pay significantly more for transportation. Adding insult to injury, even basic amenities came at an extra cost—100 pesos per towel to use while staying at the hotel, which is both absurd and unjustifiable. This is not the experience we were looking for, and it’s a stark contrast to the promises made by Vienna Hotel. If they could not accommodate us as booked, the least they could have done was transfer us to a comparable hotel with a water view or something better—not something far worse. I will never recommend Vienna Hotel to anyone. Their handling of the situation was unprofessional and misleading. This experience deserves zero stars. Avoid this hotel at all costs—worst experience ever!

Very dirty room. Clumps of hair found in the bed, aircon vents covered in mould. Ceiling covered in mould. Furnishings chipped, marked and shabby. Mosquitoes throughout. Pool had mould, breakfast looked off and was cold. Area of hotel on map is not correct, this hotel is not where the map says it is. It is up a huge hill out of town. Don’t get stung like we did on the awful hotel

To get there you have to walk up the steep heal, can be challenging for some people. We liked super friendly and helpful staff, we liked our room and the pool. Once we had late breakfast and we had not many options to choose from.

I love the tocino, chicken adobo, bangus steaks and danggit w/ friedrice. Good location, a lil bit away from crowded town. Some trycicle refuses bec location is going up a lil the hill. Vienna Hotel is located up a steep hill, a few roads from Coron town proper. So if you don’t mind a moderate walk up hill (about 2/10 Mile) or a short trike ride then Vienna hotel would be a good choice. Keep in mind the trikes will charge you more for going up hill because their bikes are not too powerful. So think twice if you’re a bigger person about taking a trike and opt for a walk. But as for the property itself, it’s really very pleasant. Nice pool, amenities, food and staff. I would say it’s probably one of the nicer places in Coron, and it’s located pretty close to where the stairs start for Mt. Tapyas. Overall a good choice as we’re fairly fit and the walk into town, while a little strenuous, was not very long. Good value for the stay too! My only negative is the breakfast buffet was lined just under their AC unit and some of the foods directly under the AC get cold immediately. I’ve had better breakfast buffets elsewhere.
