Your Travel Guide to Makati as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Makati from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For travelers coming from other major Philippine cities like Cebu, Davao, or Iloilo, flying into Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Metro Manila is the most efficient option. You can often find book flight tickets for as low as PHP 2,000 to PHP 5,000 for a round trip, depending on the season and how far in advance you book. Flight durations typically range from 1 to 2 hours. From NAIA, you can take a taxi, a ride-sharing service, or the airport bus to reach Makati, with travel times varying from 30 minutes to over an hour due to traffic.

If you prefer land travel or are coming from nearby provinces like Pampanga or Laguna, bus services are a viable and economical choice. Numerous bus terminals in Metro Manila serve routes from various regions. A bus ticket can cost anywhere from PHP 400 to PHP 1,000, depending on the origin city and bus company. The journey can take anywhere from 2 to 6 hours. Once you arrive at a bus terminal in Metro Manila, you can then take a taxi, jeepney, or LRT to get to Makati.

For those driving their own vehicles from Luzon-based provinces, expressways like the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) provide direct access to Makati. Be prepared for toll fees, which can add up, and factor in potential traffic congestion, especially during peak hours. Navigating through Metro Manila requires some familiarity with the road network, but GPS applications can be very helpful.

Best Time to Visit Makati

The Philippines experiences a tropical climate, and Makati is no exception. The best time to visit is generally during the dry season, which runs from November to April. During these months, you can expect sunny days with lower humidity, making it ideal for exploring the city’s attractions, shopping malls, and dining establishments. Temperatures typically range from 25°C to 35°C.

The period from December to February is particularly pleasant, with cooler temperatures and less rainfall, making it a popular time for both local and international tourists. However, this also means it can be peak season, so expect larger crowds and potentially higher prices for accommodation and flights. If you prefer fewer crowds and slightly lower prices, consider visiting during the shoulder months of November or late February to April.

The wet season, from May to October, brings frequent rain showers, which can sometimes be heavy and prolonged. While this season offers lush greenery and potentially lower travel costs, it can disrupt outdoor activities and make commuting more challenging due to traffic. However, if you don’t mind occasional rain and are looking for a more budget-friendly trip, the wet season can still be a good time to explore Makati’s indoor attractions like its numerous malls and museums.

Food and Dining Near Makati — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to the Philippines is complete without indulging in its rich culinary heritage, and Makati offers a fantastic array of dining experiences. You absolutely must try Adobo, the unofficial national dish. Whether it’s chicken or pork, the savory and tangy blend of soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns is a flavor profile deeply loved by Filipinos. You can find excellent versions in both casual eateries and more upscale restaurants throughout Makati.

Another essential dish is Sinigang, a sour and savory soup that comes in various forms, most commonly with pork, shrimp, or fish. The distinct sourness, usually derived from tamarind, is incredibly comforting and a true taste of home for many Filipinos. Look for restaurants that offer this hearty soup, especially on a cooler evening or after a day of exploring.

For those who enjoy grilled specialties, Lechon is a celebratory dish that’s a must-try. This roasted whole pig, with its incredibly crispy skin and tender meat, is a Filipino favorite for gatherings. While a whole lechon might be too much for a solo traveler, many restaurants offer lechon kawali (fried pork belly) or lechon baka (roasted beef) as delicious alternatives that capture similar flavors.

Don't forget to sample some Halo-Halo for dessert. This iconic Filipino treat is a delightful mix of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube ice cream. It’s a refreshing and visually appealing dessert that perfectly caps off any Filipino meal. You’ll find numerous stalls and cafes serving this popular concoction across Makati.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Makati

Filipino culture is known for its warmth and hospitality. When interacting with locals in Makati, a polite greeting like "Magandang umaga" (Good morning) or "Salamat" (Thank you) goes a long way. Respect for elders and a generally amiable demeanor are appreciated. While Makati is a modern city, understanding basic etiquette, such as dressing modestly when visiting religious sites, is always a good practice.

Safety in Makati is generally good, especially in well-trafficked areas like commercial centers and business districts. However, like any major city, it’s wise to be aware of your surroundings. Keep your valuables secure, especially in crowded places, and avoid displaying expensive items openly. It’s also advisable to use reputable transportation services. For emergencies, the local police hotline is typically 117.

For navigating the city and staying connected, several apps are highly recommended for Filipino travelers. Grab is essential for booking rides and food delivery, making transportation and dining convenient. Google Maps is indispensable for navigation, providing real-time traffic updates and directions. GCash or Maya are useful for mobile payments, allowing for cashless transactions at many establishments.

When exploring Makati, remember that traffic can be heavy, particularly during rush hours. Planning your travel times accordingly can save you a lot of frustration. Familiarizing yourself with the different modes of public transport, such as the LRT, MRT, and jeepneys, can also help you get around more affordably. Always ensure you have enough cash for smaller vendors or transport options that may not accept digital payments.
