Rantau Abang is a small settlement in Terengganu, Malaysia. It is located 22 km north of Kuala Dungun and 80 km south of Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu, Malaysia. This village used to be well-known for Leatherback Sea Turtle nesting port. During that prominent time, every year from May to August, Leatherback Sea Turtles would come to the shore at night to lay their eggs. Nevertheless, the number of Leatherback Sea Turtles that lay their eggs has severely decreased in recent years. It contradicts to what has been estimated during the 1950s. There would be over 10,000 of these turtles landed at the shoreline of the village thus called the beach, Rantau Abang, a turtle sanctuary.

In recent times the local government declared these turtles face extinction because no turtle landings have been sighted for quite some time. The biggest reason for the decline is due to poachers who take the turtle eggs and sell them in local villages. A firm move is taken where The Turtle and Marine Ecosystem Centre has been set up in Rantau Abang to spearhead conservation efforts.

As a popular tourist spot, Rantau Abang beach is safe for swimming and is still used for common tourist activities such as Banana Boat, Jet Ski, Paragliding and a few more.

How to Get There

By Car

If you choose to drive to Rantau Abang, head off to Kuantan via Tun Razak Highway. After passing Kuantan, drive further and pass by a few popular towns such as Chukai and Kerteh. After at least a five hours journey, you will reach Kuala Dungun. Slowly get to Rantau Abang beach and enjoy the breath-taking view of the beach.

By Bus

Taking a bus is a good idea too. Get your bus ticket and depart at Integrated South Terminal (TBS) straight to Kuala Dungun. The journey will approximately be six hours to reach Kuala Dungun town.

By Plane

If you want to take a flight, the nearest airport is Sultan Mahmud Airport in Kuala Terengganu. From the airport, take a taxi to Kuala Dungun where Rantau Abang beach is nested in. The journey from the airport to Rantau Abang will be about an hour.
