Menteng has long been synonymous with its elite residents — a string of ambassadors and former president, Soeharto, to name a few. However, this leafy neighborhood actually has plenty of tourist attractions worth visiting.
The affluent neighborhood is home to some of the best green spaces in the city, such as Suropati Park and Situ Lembang Park. Menteng also boasts many beautiful colonial-era buildings, now transformed into private mansions, restaurants, and luxury hotels.
Those interested in Indonesian history should visit the Proclamation Monument, where founding fathers, Soekarno and Mohammad Hatta declared independence in 1945. The nearby antique market at Surabaya Street — which offers old vinyl records, handicrafts, and other vintage goods — is also worth an afternoon stroll. Meanwhile, eateries and food stalls along Cikini Street or Sabang Street are the best options for a filling dinner at night.
