This new technique made the mural extremely fragile and its deterioration ensued. Over the past five hundred years the painting’s condition has been seriously compromised by a combination of location, materials and techniques used, humidity and tourists. Early restoration attempts only made it worse. Finally, in 1980, a 19-year restoration began, the painting was ultimately restored, but it lost much of its original paint along the way.Because of the Last Supper's poor condition and delicate nature, the entrance quota is very tight. Only one small group is allowed to stand with the painting for a maximum of 15 minutes in an air-conditioned room. Tickets are very limited and hard to come by.
