Universal Studios Japan is world-renowned for its "Universal Cool Japan" crossovers and cutting-edge tech. Here are the top ride picks and immersive experiences for your visit:

Mine Cart Madness™

The crown jewel of the brand-new Donkey Kong Country. This revolutionary "jumping" coaster uses hidden track technology to make you feel like you're leaping over gaps in a broken rail, just like the classic video games.

The Flying Dinosaur

For serious thrill-seekers. This coaster suspends you face-down, simulating the flight of a Pteranodon as it swings you through 360-degree loops.

Must-visit shopping

Explore the various shops in the park, perfect for grabbing exclusive merchandise and character-themed stuff, available at The Owl Post & Owlery, Universal Studios Store, or Honeydukes™.

Top photo hunting spots

Capture memories at iconic locations like the giant hanging shark in Amity Village, the vibrant and chaotic streets of Minion Park, or the stunning reflection of Hogwarts Castle as seen from the black lake behind the Three Broomsticks™. The retro 1930s sets in the New York and Hollywood areas also offer the perfect backdrop for stylish "outfit of the day" photos.

Interactive experiences

Engage with the park’s environment by using an Interactive Wand to cast spells in Hogsmeade™ or wearing a Power-Up Band™ to punch "?" blocks and collect digital keys in Super Nintendo World™. For high-octane live action, head to WaterWorld to witness a stunt show featuring massive explosions and a seaplane crash.

Immersive themed dining

Take a break in highly detailed eateries such as Kinopio’s Cafe™, where you can watch Toads cooking in the kitchen, or the Discovery Restaurant, which makes you feel like you are dining inside the original Jurassic Park visitor center.

Practical tips

Arriving early is the only way to enter Super Nintendo World without a "Timed Entry eTicket" or to be first in line for the high-demand Donkey Kong Country rides.
If the website says 09:00, aim to be at the turnstiles by 07:30.
You will likely walk between 15,000 and 25,000 steps. Wear broken-in sneakers with good arch support.
Download the USJ app and link your park tickets before you arrive.
Security is thorough. Prohibited items include outside food (except baby food/small snacks), large tripods, and glass bottles.
Using the USJ app and taking photos will drain your battery by noon. Bring a portable charger (rentals are available in the park but can be hard to find).
Most shops and restaurants accept major credit cards and IC cards (like Suica/Pasmo), but small snack carts occasionally prefer cash.

Must-try rides and attractions at Universal Studios Japan

  • Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey: A thrilling, immersive ride inside Hogwarts Castle that you simply cannot miss (Harry Potter fan or not)
  • Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge: Another popular ride at Universal Studios Japan is this interactive AR ride in Super Nintendo World
  • Hollywood Dream: A high-speed roller coaster with forward and backward options, offering panoramic views. Not for the faint-hearted, but hands-down one of the best rides in the park.

  • Jurassic Park: A water-based thrill ride through dinosaur encounters ending with the iconic drop.

Our tips for visiting Universal Studios Japan

  • Buy tickets online 2 months in advance: Tickets to Universal Studios Japan go on sale 2 months before the date you want to visit. There are no ticket booths at the park entrance anymore, so you must buy your tickets online in advance. Getting tickets for Universal Studios Japan is no joke. If you’re determined to visit, set an alarm exactly 2 months before your intended visit date to secure tickets.
  • Express passes are worth it: Not only are they great for skipping long queues for popular rides, but they’re also the only way you can get into popular themed areas like Super Nintendo World. Note: to enter Super Nintendo World, a "Universal Express Pass with an Area Timed Entry Ticket: Advance Booking" or "Area Timed Entry Ticket"/”Standby Entry Ticket" is required.
  • Visit on weekdays: Universal Studios Japan is almost always pretty busy, so if you can, avoid weekends and Japanese school holidays for smaller crowds and shorter wait times.
  • Check the weather and dress appropriately: Osaka can be hot and humid in summer or cold in winter; bring a portable fan or rain gear if needed.
  • Arrive early: Entering the park early may seem like common sense, but for Universal Studios Japan, it’s actually crucial to get the chance to enjoy popular rides. What we mean by this is that a Studio Pass will get you into the park; however, you’ll need to obtain Timed Entry Tickets for certain high-demand zones (like the aforementioned Super Nintendo World or Harry Potter World). These Timed Entry Tickets are only available to secure once you’re physically at the park via the official Universal Studios Japan app. Tickets are limited and will sell out fast, so get those thumbs ready as soon as you set foot inside!
  • Download the official Universal Studios Japan app in advance: Play around with it before your visit so you know exactly where to go to get those Timed Entry Tickets. You’ll also see dining options, real-time wait times, show schedules, and more.

Universal Studios Japan’s location and how to get there

Universal Studios Japan is located just 7 kms from central Osaka — and getting here is easy, thanks to Japan's intuitive public transport system.

How to get there:

  • Train: Just take the JR Sakurajima Line to Universal City Station, and you’ll be a 5-minute walk away from Universal Studios Japan. It's a 16-minute train ride from Shin-Osaka to Universal City.
  • Limousine Bus: If you’re arriving at Kansai Airport, you can take a limousine bus straight to Universal Studios Japan. It’s a great choice for those travelling with lots of luggage or planning to stay near the theme park.
  • Driving: You can also drive and park at Universal Studios Japan. However, it’s important to note that car spaces fill up early, so make sure you arrive with plenty of time to secure a parking spot.

Best time of year to visit Universal Studios Japan

The best time to visit Universal Studios Japan is on weekdays during spring (March to May) or autumn (September to November). This is when the weather is mild, crowds are smaller, and lines for popular rides like Harry Potter and Super Nintendo World are shorter.

Try to avoid visiting during the Golden Week in late April/early May and the end-of-year holidays, as the park can become extremely crowded and ticket prices may rise. Weekends are also known to be busier (and more expensive) than weekdays, so planning your visit midweek during off-peak seasons is ideal.

  • Hirakata Park: A classic amusement park with a mix of roller coasters, Ferris wheels, and seasonal events just 40 minutes from Universal Studios Japan.
