About Australia Day

A national public holiday, Australia Day is observed annually on 26 January it is marked by various events across the country, including peformances by local talent, large citizenship ceremonies, respectful ceremonies and displays of aboriginal culture and, of course, fireworks to conclude the day.

It's held on 26 January to commemorate the First Fleet of British ships that arrived at Port Jackson, marking the beginning of European colonisation in Australia. However, it can be a sensitive day for some as it celebrated the day the fleet arrived rather than signing of a national constitution like many other countries.

So, while there will be plenty of celebrations going on, do keep that is mind and pay respect to those who may feel differently about what Australia Day means to them.
