Crossing the Lombok Strait is simpler than you think. Whether you’re after a scenic ferry ride, a fast-boat dash or a short hop by plane, there’s a perfect option waiting. Each route comes with its own perks: local vibes, speed or comfort. Whether you’re counting every dollar or keen to arrive fast, here’s how to cross the strait without the stress.

Where is Lombok compared to Bali?

Lombok sits just east of Bali, about 35 kms away across the Lombok Strait. It’s part of West Nusa Tenggara and feels completely different to Bali; drier, more rugged, and way less developed.

It’s the kind of place where you’ll find surfboards strapped to scooters, local warungs instead of smoothie bowl cafés, and palm trees for days. If you’re heading to the Gili Islands or Kuta Lombok, this is your jump-off point.

Your options for getting from Bali to Lombok

Getting from Bali to Lombok is a breeze. Whether you want to save cash, get there fast, or travel in comfort, there’s an option that suits your style:

Public ferry:
Fast boat:
Flight:

Public ferry from Bali to Lombok

Cost: Around AU$6

Duration: 4 - 6 hours (plus transfer time)

Leaves from: Padang Bai, Bali

Goes to: Lembar, Lombok

The public ferry is the most budget-friendly option. You’ll depart from Padang Bai, a small harbour town known for its diving spots. The crossing takes four to six hours, depending on sea conditions.

You’ll be sharing space with trucks, scooters, and local families. There’s a basic shop on board for instant noodles and snacks. It’s no luxury cruise, but that’s part of the adventure.

Heads up: If you're planning to take a scooter over, check with your rental company first, as most Bali rentals don’t allow bikes off the island without permission.

Fast boat from Bali to Lombok

Cost: Around AU$10 – AU$20

Duration: 2 – 4 hours (plus transfer time)

Leaves from: Padang Bai or Sanur, Bali

Goes to: Bangsal or Senggigi, Lombok

Want to get there quicker? The fast boat is your best bet. Boats leave from Padang Bai and the resort-filled Sanur, which may be more convenient.

Sanur is close if you’re staying in Seminyak, Canggu, or Uluwatu. Padang Bai is a bit more chaotic, but can be faster if you’re heading north.

Expect a bumpy ride—seas can get rough, so seasickness tablets are a good shout. The Bangsal port can also be tricky, with overpriced taxis and scammers waiting. Best to book a transfer in advance or ask your accommodation to sort it.

Bonus: Most of the fast boats also stop at the Gili Islands before Lombok. So, if you’re visiting the islands, you can get a direct transfer.

Flight from Bali to Lombok

Cost: From AU$100

Duration: 40 minutes in the air (but allow for airport time)

Leaves from: Ngurah Rai International Airport, Denpasar, Bali

Goes to: Lombok Praya International Airport, Lombok

Flying is hands-down the fastest and comfiest way to get to Lombok. You’ll be in the air for about 40 minutes, but don’t forget to add travel to the airport, check-in, and waiting times.

This option is perfect if you get seasick or just want to land and get going. Lombok’s airport is close to Kuta Lombok, about a 20-minute drive.

At the moment, Wings Air is the only airline flying this route, but luckily doesn’t charge a premium for it.

How to choose

On a budget?
In a rush?
Want a balance?

Think about where you’re staying on both islands. A long drive at either end can also eat up your day.

Why visit both islands?
