Vietnam Visa Guide for Australians: e-Visa, Visa on Arrival, and Entry Requirements (2026)

Vietnam has rapidly become one of the most popular destinations for Australian travellers — and it is easy to understand why. From the lantern-lit streets of Hoi An and the dramatic limestone karsts of Ha Long Bay, to the street food of Hanoi and the buzzing energy of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam offers an extraordinary range of experiences at exceptional value. Entering Vietnam as an Australian requires a visa, but the process is simple, mostly online, and the most popular option takes less than 30 minutes to complete. Here is everything you need to know.

Do Australians Need a Visa for Vietnam?

Yes. Australian passport holders must obtain a visa before or upon arrival in Vietnam. The recommended option for most Australians is the Vietnam e-visa, which is applied for entirely online, valid for up to 90 days, and accepted at airports, land border crossings, and seaports across Vietnam. The Visa on Arrival (VoA) is a secondary option available only at international airports, but it requires additional preparation and is generally less convenient than the e-visa for most travellers.

Option 1: Vietnam e-Visa (Recommended)

The Vietnam e-visa is the most convenient and widely used entry option for Australian travellers. It is applied for and approved entirely online — no travel agent, no approval letter, no cash at the airport required. Since 2023, Australia has been eligible for the 90-day e-visa, which allows both single and multiple entries.

Stay permittedUp to 90 days
Entry typeSingle or multiple entry (choose at application)
Entry points acceptedInternational airports, land border crossings, and seaports

How to Apply for the Vietnam e-Visa

1.
Go to the official Vietnam e-visa portal at evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn
2.
Create an account and begin a new application
3.
Enter your personal details, passport information, intended entry and exit dates, and entry point (airport or border crossing)
4.
Upload a digital passport-sized photo and a scan of your passport biodata page
5.
Pay the USD 25 fee by credit or debit card
6.
Submit and wait for approval — usually 3 working days, though applying at least 1 week before departure is strongly recommended
7.
Download and print your approved e-visa, or save it clearly on your phone to present at the immigration counter on arrival

Only use the official government portal. Third-party sites charge higher fees for the same result.

Option 2: Vietnam Visa on Arrival (VoA)

The Vietnam Visa on Arrival is available only at international airports, not at land or sea entry points. Unlike the standard airport VoA process in some countries, the Vietnam VoA requires you to arrange an approval letter in advance through an accredited Vietnamese travel agency or visa service before you fly — it is not a walk-up process. For most Australian travellers, the e-visa is faster, cheaper, and more straightforward. The VoA is best suited for last-minute bookings where there is not enough time for e-visa processing.

VoA Process (if you choose this route)

1.
Arrange an approval letter online through an accredited Vietnamese travel agency — standard processing takes 3 to 5 business days; express options are available. Expect to pay a processing fee of around USD 20 to 30
2.
Receive the approval letter by email and print a hard copy — you need this to board your flight and present on arrival
3.
Prepare two passport-sized photos (4x6 cm, white background) and complete a visa application form (available at the airport)
4.
On arrival, proceed to the Visa on Arrival counter at the airport, submit your documents, and pay the stamping fee: USD 25 for single entry, USD 50 for multiple entries. Cash only — cards are not accepted at the stamping counter
5.
Wait 15 to 30 minutes (longer during peak periods) and collect your passport with the visa sticker

Entry Requirements for All Australian Travellers to Vietnam
