Thai Airways from Australia

Thai Airways International is Thailand's national airline, using flight code TG and Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) as its main hub. For Australian travellers, its nonstop links from Sydney, Melbourne and Perth offer access to Bangkok and onward journeys through the airline's network.

Compare the complete itinerary when choosing a connection. Suvarnabhumi (BKK) and Don Mueang (DMK) are separate Bangkok airports, so a change between them involves a ground journey rather than a walk between terminals. The operating airline on each segment also matters: a ticket carrying a TG flight number can include a partner-operated service.

Airline overview and history

Thai Airways began in 1960 as a joint venture between Thai Airways Company and Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS). SAS transferred its shareholding to the Thai partner in 1977. In 1997, THAI became one of the five founding members of Star Alliance.

The airline moved its operating base to Suvarnabhumi in 2006. Its Bangkok hub remains central to trips from Australia, whether Bangkok is the destination or the connection point. Star Alliance membership offers eligible partner benefits, but mileage, extra baggage and lounge access depend on the traveller's fare, cabin and membership conditions.

Fleet, aircraft and cabin choice

THAI's current fleet catalogue includes Boeing 777 and 787 aircraft, Airbus A350 and A330 widebodies, and Airbus A320 and A321neo aircraft. A general fleet list does not identify the seat or cabin available on every Australian departure. Check the aircraft and seat map attached to the flight you select.

Economy and Royal Silk Business are the main products to compare on the Australian services. Additional products such as Economy Plus, Premium Economy or Premium Economy Plus have aircraft-specific availability. Their appearance in a baggage table is not evidence that the cabin is sold on your Sydney, Melbourne or Perth flight.

For a Business booking, compare the actual seat layout if a fully flat bed or direct aisle access is important. Aircraft substitutions can change the product. In Economy, assess the seat and included baggage separately from any paid Preferred Seat option.

Australia to Bangkok and onward connections

THAI's nonstop Australian options include Sydney–Bangkok Suvarnabhumi, Melbourne–Bangkok Suvarnabhumi and Perth–Bangkok Suvarnabhumi. Choose the actual travel dates to compare available departures and fares rather than treating those examples as a complete current network list.

The Sydney service is scheduled at approximately 9 hours 20 minutes, with small seasonal changes. Melbourne and Perth have their own schedules; use the duration of the selected flight when comparing them. An overnight or connecting itinerary should be compared by its full arrival date and total elapsed time.

For Phuket, Chiang Mai or another onward destination, compare the complete journey through Bangkok, including the layover and baggage arrangements. A ticket offered from Australia to another Thai city is not automatically a nonstop service from Australia. On separate tickets, allow for the additional check-in and baggage steps rather than assuming through handling.

Baggage allowance and fare choice

Cabin baggage

The standard THAI cabin allowance is one main bag up to 7 kg, no larger than 56×45×25 cm including wheels, handles and side pockets. This standard allowance also applies in Royal Silk; Business Class alone does not automatically mean two main cabin bags.

In addition, a small handbag, purse or laptop item can be carried within the published 37.5×25×12.5 cm reference dimensions, or 75 cm total dimensions, and 1.5 kg limit. Eligible Star Alliance Gold travellers on certain journeys involving two or more Star Alliance carriers have separate additional-cabin-bag conditions.

Checked baggage

THAI's piece policy applies to eligible tickets sold or issued, and totally unused tickets reissued, from 25 November 2025 for travel commencing from 2 March 2026. For the applicable international journey category including Australia, Standard Economy includes one piece up to 23 kg; Flexi and Full Flex include two pieces up to 23 kg each. Royal Silk includes two pieces up to 32 kg each.

The published Saver table normally lists one 23 kg piece, but carries a destination-specific exception where no checked bag is included. Confirm the allowance on the exact fare you buy. Each checked piece must be within 158 cm combined length, width and height, including wheels and handles. Older tickets, partner-operated sectors and stopovers need their own allowance assessment.

A purely domestic Thai ticket has a different table: Economy fares include one 23 kg piece rather than the two-piece international Flexi allowance. If you buy an onward domestic ticket separately, compare its own conditions. Do not treat two 23 kg pieces as permission to check one 46 kg bag.

Extra and special baggage

Include any extra baggage cost when comparing fares. Purchase options depend on the ticket and journey; sports equipment, musical instruments and oversized items can have separate acceptance conditions. Describe the item and its packed dimensions to the airline before buying an ordinary extra-bag option that may not cover it.

Check-in guide

THAI's online check-in window is 24 hours until 1 hour before scheduled departure for eligible electronic tickets. The airline's FAQ excludes passengers requiring certain special assistance, children travelling alone, and passengers with pets, sports equipment or overweight or oversized baggage from that online process.

Online check-in does not replace all airport procedures. For an international flight, present the required travel documents and complete any boarding-pass or baggage formalities at the airport. THAI's international check-in FAQ directs passengers to its counter at least 60 minutes before departure. Follow the instructions for your departure airport and allow substantially more time for arrival, document checks and security.

At Bangkok Suvarnabhumi, THAI publishes self-bag-drop facilities on the fourth floor in rows D–E. That location is specific to Bangkok; it is not a bag-drop location for your Australian departure. Keep your booking reference and travel documents accessible, and reach the gate by the deadline on your boarding pass.

Onboard meals, entertainment and seats

Economy service includes a snack or hot meal according to flight duration, with Thai and international dishes across the airline's menus. The actual menu varies by flight. Long-haul entertainment is offered on personal screens, while Wi-Fi and other equipment depend on the aircraft; do not assume identical facilities on every segment.

Special meals are different from selecting a preferred main-course menu. THAI's FAQ requires international special-meal requests, including child and infant meals, at least 48 hours before departure. For an Australia–Bangkok flight, arrange the request early through the appropriate airline or booking support channel and obtain confirmation for the relevant segment.

Pre-Select Meal access is limited by cabin, membership and flight. THAI describes access for First and Business passengers and, in Economy, Royal Orchid Plus Gold and Platinum members on eligible services. Confirm the available menu and deadline for your flight rather than treating it as a service included in every Economy fare.

Preferred Seats in Economy include certain front-row and emergency-exit seats and cost extra. Exit-row eligibility is checked by the airline; passengers under 15, pregnant travellers and those travelling with infants are among those excluded. A paid seat option does not change your baggage entitlement or guarantee eligibility for an exit row.

Children, infants and unaccompanied travel

Tell THAI about infant seating and equipment needs before travel. The airline does not accept infants under 14 days. A baby under two can use an approved car seat on a paid seat under the airline's conditions; a bassinet is a separate request subject to the aircraft and availability.

Published bassinet limits are under six months, under 10 kg and no more than 67 cm long. Economy bassinet seats are treated as paid Preferred Seats. Confirm the request and charge with THAI; a bassinet is not automatically secured when an infant is added to a booking. The service is unavailable on Thai domestic flights and certain regional routes.

For children travelling alone, contact THAI to arrange its unaccompanied-minor service. The published age range is 5–11 in Economy and 8–11 in Business or First, with an optional service for ages 12–17. Parents or guardians must complete the required formalities and remain at the airport until departure.

The service does not cover TG four-digit codeshares or itineraries transferring between BKK and DMK. Overnight stops or transfers exceeding six hours have additional assistance restrictions. Obtain the airline's acceptance of the child's exact itinerary before purchasing an unsuitable connection.

Pregnancy and other assistance

From 28 weeks of pregnancy, THAI requires a certificate stating the expected delivery date and fitness to travel, issued within seven days before departure. For a single pregnancy without complications, its published limit is up to 34 weeks on flights longer than four hours, compared with up to 36 weeks on shorter flights. The return journey can require a new certificate if the original is outside its validity period.

Confirm the airline's acceptance and required documents for the actual journey, particularly for other pregnancy circumstances or connecting flights.

For wheelchair assistance, mobility aids or medical equipment, describe the assistance needed when arranging the booking. The airline may need approval or documentation specific to the request. A general online booking or online check-in confirmation does not itself arrange that assistance.

Changes, cancellations and refunds

Check the selected fare's change and refund rules before payment. A voluntary change can depend on available seats, a change fee and any fare difference; a lower-priced fare can have tighter conditions. Do not assume that all Standard, Flexi or promotional tickets carry identical rules across routes and sales channels.

For a Traveloka ticket, begin with the instructions and available options in your booking details. Contact support if the request is not available there. An airline website's self-service process may be limited to tickets purchased through that airline, so the original booking channel remains important.

If the airline cancels or changes the flight, retain the notification and request the alternatives applicable to your booking. Disruption handling is different from cancelling voluntarily. Rebooking, refund eligibility and processing time should be confirmed for the affected ticket rather than promised as an instant result.

Comparing fares on Traveloka

Compare the total relevant cost, including the checked pieces and seat options you actually need. For example, an international Flexi fare's second checked piece can matter more than a small difference in the base price if you plan to travel with two bags. If you may change dates, compare those conditions alongside baggage rather than choosing on price alone.

Where your plans allow, compare alternative travel dates and departure times. School holidays and major festivals can affect demand, but no particular weekday or booking window always guarantees the lowest fare. Assess a flight-and-hotel offer against the separate totals for your actual trip instead of assuming a bundle always saves money.

How to book a Thai Airways flight

1. Enter the origin and destination airports, travel dates, passenger ages and cabin in the Traveloka flight search.
2. Compare available THAI itineraries, including the operating carrier, connections, arrival date, baggage and fare conditions.
3. Enter passenger details exactly as shown on the travel documents. Add only the optional services actually offered for that booking.
4. Review the final amount and choose from the payment methods displayed. Availability of a particular payment provider or add-on is booking-specific.
5. After payment, check the booking and ticket status in your account and keep the issued itinerary available for travel.

Your e-ticket records the issued booking; the boarding pass comes from completing check-in. Use the booking's support instructions if ticket issuance or a requested change needs attention rather than assuming that every confirmation is immediate.
