You might know Kuala Lumpur as an airport stopover. But have you ever stepped outside? In the Malaysian capital, you’ll find colonial facades and glassy malls, mosque domes and monorails. Street food sizzles in Jalan Alor. Lake Symphony glows by night. In Brickfields, temples sit shoulder to shoulder with old churches and curry houses. Add in a dash of day trips to Batu Caves, an aviary that rivals the jungle, and a museum full of royal songket.
Whether you’re going on to Langkawi or London afterwards, KL can be your launch pad.
Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) is 45 km south of Kuala Lumpur city centre in Sepang. Getting to town? An absolute breeze. All you have to do is hop on the Express Rail Link, which takes about 30 minutes. Other options include metered taxis, airport buses, and hotel shuttles. Want to go rideshare? Grab is the local favourite in KL.
For wallet-friendly fares to Kuala Lumpur, your best bet is shoulder season. It’s May and September through November deliver, giving both the lowest prices and skillfully avoiding school holidays and monsoon peaks.
Come December and January, expect a jump in prices. We’re talking festive travel, school breaks and year-end trips. While firmly in monsoon season, they all push demand (and costs) sky-high. Also, keep an eye on February. While relatively inexpensive, if your trip overlaps with the Lunar New Year, prices will come back up again.
Aussies can stay in Malaysia for up to 90 days without a visa, but you will need a passport. Just make sure your passport has at least six months' validity from when you land.
As it is an international flight, give yourself 2 to 3 hours before take-off to pass through check-in, passport control and security without one iota of stress.
