Located about 15 kms from Geelong (and 50 kms from Melbourne), Avalon Airport is a convenient alternative to Melbourne’s main airport (Tullarmarine) — especially for budget-conscious travellers. Avalon primarily serves domestic routes and is a hub for low-cost carriers like Jetstar, making it a popular departure point for cheap flights to cities such as Sydney, Gold Coast, and Adelaide. Further, the airport is easy to navigate, offers shorter check-in times, and provides free Wi-Fi. It’s especially convenient for travellers living in Melbourne’s western suburbs.
Avalon Airport is a single terminal building which currently handles domestic flights only. From March 2026, it will once again be an international airport with the start of Jetstar’s new Avalon-Bali route. (AirAsia used to operate flights to Kuala Lumpur here.)
Compact and easy to navigate, the check-in counters are right at the entrance, security lies just ahead, and departure gates are just a short walk away. Expect simple airport amenities like free wifi, charging stations, and small cafes near departures.
There are a few ways to get to Avalon Airport, depending on where you’re travelling from.
If you’re coming from Melbourne CBD, simply hop onto the SkyBus (Avalon City Express) at Southern Cross Station. To make things even easier, the buses are timed to meet major Jetstar flights. It’ll take you around 50 to 60 minutes (depending on traffic), costing around AU$27. Otherwise, you can also grab a taxi or book a rideshare like Uber for a door-to-door service.
If you’re coming to/from Geelong, you can opt for the MyBus Airport Transfers that will pick you up and drop you off wherever you’re staying. Bookings are essential — make sure to book at least 2 business days before you fly.
The obvious airport that is close by is Melbourne’s Tullamarine Airport. Located just around an hour from Avalon, Melbourne Tullamarine is Victoria’s main international airport. This means there are way more flights to choose from, both domestically and internationally.
The cheapest time to fly from Avalon is during the off-peak or shoulder seasons (outside school holidays and the Christmas/New Year’s rush). Travelling mid-week also offers great savings, as well as evening flights. And if you can, try to book around 28 days before you fly, as booking too close to departure may drive flight prices up.
