About Tokyo flights

Neon streets, tiny ramen joints, and pockets of calm like nowhere else; Tokyo is a city that’s constantly flipping the script. It’s the kind of place that grabs you by the senses and doesn’t let go. Whether you're hunting down vintage vinyl or just craving the freshest sushi around, Tokyo’s got your back.

How long is the flight to Tokyo

Which airlines fly direct to Tokyo

  • Qantas: Proper full-service flying with meals, movies, and a decent baggage allowance to boot.
  • Japan Airlines: Known for its roomy seats and meals that feature local ingredients.
  • All Nippon Airways (ANA): Award-winning service, comfy seats, and well-reviewed customer care.
  • Jetstar: Low fares that free up your wallet for all the shopping and sushi your heart can handle.

Where you can fly direct to Tokyo from

Where is the airport in Tokyo?

Narita International Airport sits out in Chiba, about 60 kms from central Tokyo. If you’re chasing speed, the Narita Express (N'EX) gets you to Tokyo Station in just under an hour.

Want to save a bit of time and cash? The Keisei Skyliner is a quicker hop to Ueno and tends to be slightly cheaper.

Airport buses roll into major hotels and stations too, though they can get stuck if traffic is heavy. Taxis are an option, but they’ll hit your wallet pretty hard — better for late nights or lazy mornings.

When is the cheapest time to fly to Tokyo

January to March tends to be your best bet. Plus, if you’re into snow sports it’s peak ski season in Japan and the slopes are just a few hours from Tokyo. If you’re staying in the city, it’s a bit chilly, sure, but crowds thin out and hotels drop their rates, too. And it’s the perfect excuse for warm matchas.

Cherry blossom season from late March into early April, though, could set you back a bit with higher airfares and sold-out rooms. Golden Week in early May is another time you might want to steer clear — prices more or less double during that rush.

Visa/Passport requirements when flying to Tokyo

Australian passport holders don’t need a visa for trips under 90 days. Just show up with a passport that’s valid for at least 6 months after you plan to leave.

How early to arrive at the airport

For flights heading to Tokyo, aim to get to the airport about 3 hours before your plane’s set to leave. That way you have plenty of time to check in, drop off your bags and clear security and customs.

Booking your Tokyo hotel, a few local experiences, or lining up a hire car? Sort it all through Traveloka.

For domestic flights, the earlier, the better, but six to eight weeks in advance on popular routes should do the trick.
