Ningxia sits in a corner of northwest China where three landscapes meet in one small region: a real stretch of the Yellow River, the dunes of the Tengger Desert, and vineyards climbing the eastern foothills of the Helan Mountains. It's easy to skip past on a first China itinerary, but it packs desert, river and wine country into a region you can cross by car in a day.

• Ningxia is high desert country, so days can be warm and nights cold even outside winter. Pack layers regardless of season, and check heating is confirmed if travelling between November and March.
• Most flights land at Yinchuan Hedong International Airport, so a Yinchuan hotel for the first and last night cuts down on transfers if you're also heading out to Zhongwei or the wineries mid-trip.
• If birdwatching at Sand Lake is the goal, aim for April-May or the autumn migration and book Shizuishan rather than backtracking from Yinchuan each day.
