A go-to hotel when visiting Semarang. It's strategically located, within walking distance to the souvenir center. What's most impressive is the size of the beds. The twin beds are quite large, allowing for two children to sleep in one bed. The pillows and mattress are of good quality, ensuring a good night's sleep. Despite the affordable price, the rooms are quite large, and there's a work desk.

More about hotels in Central Java

About Central Java accommodation

Central Java sits at the cultural heart of Indonesia, home to two of Southeast Asia's most extraordinary ancient monuments, Borobudur and Prambanan, plus a cool volcanic highland and a beautifully preserved Dutch-era port city. Whether you base yourself near the temples, in the coastal city of Semarang or up on the Dieng Plateau, Traveloka has accommodation to suit every kind of trip.

From heritage resorts with private pools looking out towards Borobudur, to family-friendly hotels in central Semarang and simple highland guesthouses near Dieng, Central Java's accommodation options are as varied as its landscapes. Here's a guide to help you choose where to stay, how much to budget and what to see while you're there.

Where to stay in Central Java

  • Near Borobudur: base yourself in the hills around Magelang for temple-facing views and easy access to sunrise tours, with options ranging from simple guesthouses to heritage resorts.
  • Semarang: the provincial capital and main port city, handy for a night either side of a longer Central Java trip, with hotels ranging from business-style stays to five-star properties near the Kota Lama old town.
  • Dieng Plateau: a cool highland base near Wonosobo, best for travellers chasing the crater lakes and ancient temple complexes, with basic homestays and small hotels geared towards early starts.
  • Solo (Surakarta): a quieter alternative to Yogyakarta with its own royal heritage and batik markets, home to a growing number of design-led hotels.

How much is Central Java accommodation?

  • Budget: AU$15-35 a night, simple guesthouses and homestays, often with fan-cooled rooms and shared or basic bathrooms.
  • Mid-range: AU$40-90 a night, three and four-star hotels with air conditioning, breakfast and a pool, typically in Semarang or near Borobudur.
  • Luxury: AU$150-450 a night, heritage resorts and five-star properties with private pools, spa facilities and temple or garden views.

What Central Java is known for

  • Borobudur: the world's largest Buddhist monument, a nine-tiered stone structure built from around 55,000 cubic metres of volcanic andesite and decorated with more than 2,600 carved relief panels, best seen at sunrise.
  • Prambanan: a soaring Hindu temple complex whose central spire rises 47 metres, the tallest temple structure in Indonesia, arranged in a symmetrical layout across more than 200 smaller shrines.
  • Dieng Plateau: one of Java's highest inhabited areas, known for its colour-shifting crater lake, active volcanic craters and small stone temples said to be among the oldest in Java.
  • Semarang's Kota Lama: a Dutch colonial old town of more than 50 heritage buildings, including the landmark Lawang Sewu and the 1753 Blenduk Church, restored around the old Semarang River.

Top-rated hotels in Central Java

  • Amanjiwo: an award-winning luxury resort in the Menoreh Hills near Magelang, built from local limestone in a temple-inspired form directly facing Borobudur, with several suites offering private pools.
  • Plataran Borobudur: a heritage-style resort close to the temple, popular with travellers wanting pool decks and rooms positioned for views towards Borobudur.
  • Padma Hotel Semarang: a five-star hotel in Semarang with a waterpark, multiple swimming pools, a rooftop restaurant and interiors drawing on the city's Javanese design heritage.
  • Hotel Tentrem Semarang: an upscale hotel in central Semarang, convenient for both the Kota Lama old town and the city's business district.
  • Alila Solo: a design-led hotel in Solo (Surakarta), a good base for exploring the city's batik markets and heritage quarters.

Travel tips for Central Java

  • Visit Borobudur and Prambanan early or on a sunrise tour to beat both the heat and the crowds, and book sunrise tickets in advance as numbers are limited.
  • Pack a warm layer for the Dieng Plateau, night-time temperatures can drop close to freezing even though the rest of Central Java is tropical.
  • Distances between the main areas are long by Australian standards, allow several hours' drive between Borobudur, Semarang and Dieng, so plan an itinerary rather than trying to see everything in one day.
  • Hire a car with a driver rather than self-driving, it's the easiest way to cover Central Java's temples, old towns and highland roads comfortably.
  • Carry small-denomination Indonesian rupiah for temple entry, local guides and rural warungs, as card acceptance is patchy outside the main hotels.

Frequently Asked Questions about Accommodation in Central Java

What makes Central Java worth visiting?

Central Java packs a lot of visual variety into one region. Borobudur is a massive tiered stone structure best seen at sunrise, when mist and early light make the carved terraces stand out. Prambanan's slender temple spires create a dramatic skyline against the surrounding plains. Up on the Dieng Plateau, you get volcanic craters and a lake that shifts colour with the light, and down in Semarang there are old town streets and Chinatown lanes lined with shophouses and lantern-strung alleys. It suits travellers who want a mix of striking architecture, highland scenery and a working port city, all within a few hours of each other.

When is the best time to visit Central Java?

The dry season, roughly April to October, is the easiest time to visit. Skies are clearer for sunrise views at the temples, and trails on the Dieng Plateau are less slippery. The wet season, November to March, brings afternoon downpours and more humidity, but showers are usually short and hotel rates tend to be lower. If your main goal is temple photos or a Dieng sunrise hike, aim for the dry months. If you are mostly staying around Semarang or Solo, the wet season is still manageable.

Do Australians need a visa to visit Central Java?

Indonesia has historically offered short-stay visa exemption or visa-on-arrival options for Australian passport holders, but entry rules and fees do change from time to time. Check the current requirements on the Indonesian immigration website or with the Indonesian embassy or consulate in Australia before you book flights, and confirm your passport has enough validity left, since that condition is enforced strictly at the border.

How do I get to Central Java from Australia?

There are no direct flights from Australia into Central Java. The usual route is to fly from an Australian city to Jakarta or Denpasar first, then take a domestic connection to Yogyakarta or to Semarang's Ahmad Yani Airport. From either airport it is a manageable road transfer to Borobudur, the Dieng Plateau or central Semarang. Yogyakarta is the more common entry point since it has more frequent domestic connections and is closest to Borobudur and Prambanan.

Can I visit both Borobudur and Prambanan in a single day?

Yes, this is a common day trip. The two sites are around 50 kilometres apart, about a 1 to 1.5 hour drive depending on traffic, and most visitors base themselves in Yogyakarta or the Magelang hills for the night before. A typical plan is an early sunrise visit to Borobudur, breakfast nearby, then an afternoon or late-afternoon visit to Prambanan when the light softens again. Trying to add the Dieng Plateau to the same day is not realistic, since that is a separate multi-hour drive.

Is Central Java a good destination for families with kids?

It can work well for families, with a bit of planning. Borobudur and Prambanan both involve some walking on uneven stone and steps, so a carrier is more practical than a pram for younger kids. The Dieng Plateau is cooler and good for older children who enjoy being outdoors, but pack warm layers since nights can get close to freezing. Semarang is the easiest base for families overall, with hotels that have pools and waterpark-style facilities, plus shorter travel times between attractions than the more remote Dieng route.

How do I get around Central Java once I arrive?

Within Semarang, ride-hailing apps and the Trans Semarang bus network cover most short trips around the city and Kota Lama. For getting between towns, such as Semarang to Borobudur or up to Dieng, a private car with a driver is the most practical option, since public transport links between these areas are limited and journey times are long. Some travellers use intercity trains between Semarang, Solo and Yogyakarta, which is a comfortable alternative to road transfers on that particular route.

What currency is used and can I pay by card?

The local currency is the Indonesian Rupiah, and it is the only currency accepted for everyday purchases. Major cards are generally accepted at larger hotels, chain restaurants and shopping centres in Semarang and Yogyakarta, but smaller warungs, market stalls and temple entry counters are cash-only. ATMs are easy to find in the main cities, so it is worth withdrawing rupiah before heading up to the Dieng Plateau or other rural areas, where card facilities and ATMs are scarce.

Will I have trouble communicating in English in Central Java?

Bahasa Indonesia is the everyday language, but you will generally find enough English to get by in hotels, tour operators and restaurants around Borobudur, Yogyakarta and central Semarang. In smaller villages around the Dieng Plateau or Solo's back streets, English is less common, so a translation app or a handful of basic Indonesian phrases makes ordering food, negotiating a fair taxi fare or asking for directions much easier.

Is there more to Central Java beyond the well-known landmarks?

Plenty. Semarang's old town has quiet colonial-era streets alongside a Chinatown of narrow lanes, shophouses and small local eateries that see far fewer visitors than the temples. Solo, a short trip from Yogyakarta, has its own batik markets and slower pace, with none of the crowds you get around Borobudur. Villages on the Dieng Plateau give a glimpse of everyday highland farming life between the tourist stops. Spending even a day away from the main sights adds a more local feel to a Central Java trip.

This is my umpteenth stay at MG Suite Semarang, my family's favorite hotel. My kids love it and are very happy staying here. The place is comfortable, the environment is pleasant, and it's close to restaurants. The staff is friendly, and it's clean. The best. I booked a three-night stay straight away.
