Nice entertainment system. Since we own a Hisense TV at home, it was super easy to operate. Comfortable bed. Either no one is around us or the soundproof is incredible! Amenities are adequate. Clean room and bathroom. Great shower and bathtub.

More about hotels in Perak

About Perak accommodation

Perak is Malaysia's food-lovers' secret weapon, and Ipoh is the reason. This is the city that put smooth, sweet white coffee on the map and turned a plate of silky hor fun into something worth a special trip. Wander through Old Town and you'll find pastel shophouses turned into old-school kopitiam, a trail of Ernest Zacharevic street art tucked into the back lanes, and a heritage-meets-hipster energy that's hard to find anywhere else in Malaysia.

Beyond the city, Perak stretches into striking limestone hills like Perak Tong and Kek Lok Tong, where cavernous halls hide a giant Buddha statue and painted murals climbing straight up the rock, and half-built curiosities like Kellie's Castle, an early-1900s mansion that was never finished and now sits full of empty rooms, secret staircases, and unanswered questions. Then there's Pangkor Island, a short ferry ride away, where the pace drops right down to quiet beaches and fishing villages. Whatever kind of trip you're after, whether that's a food crawl through Old Town or a few lazy days by the water, there's a stay in Perak to match.

Where to stay in Perak

  • Ipoh: Perak's heritage-and-food capital, and the best base for exploring Old Town's mural trail, coffee shops, and the limestone cave temples just out of town. Browse hotels in Ipoh.
  • Pangkor Island: A short ferry from Lumut swaps the coffee shops for quiet beaches and fishing villages, at a genuinely slower pace than the mainland. Browse hotels on Pangkor Island.

How much is Perak accommodation?

Perak is properly good value even by Malaysian standards, with a clean, comfortable room easily found for well under AU$50 a night.

  • Backpackers/Hostels: From AU$9 per night. Dorm beds and simple guesthouses in Ipoh Old Town, an easy walk from the murals and the coffee shops.
  • Budget hotels/Guesthouses: From AU$25 per night. Clean, no-fuss rooms around Ipoh's city centre, usually with aircon and free WiFi.
  • Mid-range/Apartments: From AU$45 per night. More space and usually a pool, close to the Old Town food trail or Ipoh's malls.
  • Boutique: From AU$70 per night. Restored shophouses and heritage buildings with a bit more design flair, mostly clustered around Old Town.
  • Luxury/Resorts: From AU$150 per night on the mainland, climbing well past AU$400 for a private-island resort stay on Pangkor Laut.

Top-rated hotels in Perak

  • M Boutique Hotel Ipoh: A genuinely artsy stay with quirky interior design, right in the middle of Perak's heritage buzz.
  • MH Hotel Ipoh: 111 straightforward rooms near Ipoh's weekend markets and local cafes, a solid mid-range pick.
  • Fair Park Hotel Ipoh: Handy to Ipoh Parade mall, with a cineplex and bowling alley next door for a rainy-day backup plan.
  • Palm Hotel Ipoh: Simple, well-reviewed rooms a short drive from the railway station, good if you're arriving by train.
  • Marina Island Pangkor Resort & Hotel: A waterfront resort on a man-made island off Lumut, right by the jetty for ferries across to Pangkor proper.
  • Pangkor Laut Resort: The splurge pick, with an entire private island to itself, no passing traffic, and no one else's towel on your patch of beach.

Tips for finding the perfect accommodation in Perak

  • Base yourself in Ipoh Old Town if food is the main game. You'll be within walking distance of the white coffee shops, the mural trail, and the famous hor fun, bean sprout chicken, and tau fu fah stalls, so you can skip the ride-share.
  • If Kellie's Castle and the cave temples like Perak Tong and Kek Lok Tong are on your list, look at hotels on the southern side of Ipoh or book a car rental, since both sit just outside the city centre and save you some backtracking.
  • Weekends and school holidays push Ipoh's popular Old Town hotels out fast, since it's a favourite day-trip and long-weekend spot for locals too, so lock in your dates a few weeks ahead where you can.
  • Heading to Pangkor Island, book a stay that includes or sits close to the jetty transfer. Ferries run from Lumut on a set schedule, and you don't want to be stuck lugging bags across town to catch the last one.
  • On Pangkor, decide between the main island's beaches like Teluk Nipah and Pasir Bogak for a livelier, more affordable base, or Pangkor Laut for a private-island resort stay with a bigger price tag attached.

Frequently Asked Questions about Accommodation in Perak

Is Perak worth visiting for an Australian traveller?

Yeah, definitely, especially if you've already ticked off Kuala Lumpur or Penang and want something a bit different. Perak gives you a proper food-and-heritage city in Ipoh plus a laid-back island getaway in Pangkor, all in one trip. It's less about big attractions and more about slowing down, eating well, and having a beach day without the crowds you'd get elsewhere in Malaysia.

What's the best time of year to visit Perak?

Perak sits on Malaysia's west coast, so it follows that pattern rather than the east coast's monsoon. You'll get the driest, sunniest stretches from December to February and again from June to August, which makes those windows your best bet for exploring Old Town on foot or spending lazy days on Pangkor's beaches without getting rained out.

Do Australians need a visa to visit Malaysia?

Good news, most Australian passport holders can enter Malaysia visa-free for short tourist stays, usually up to 90 days. That said, entry rules can shift, so it's worth double-checking the latest requirements with the Malaysian High Commission or your travel agent before you lock in flights, rather than assuming last year's rules still apply.

How do I get to Perak from Australia?

There's no direct flight, so you'll land in Kuala Lumpur first. From there, Ipoh is an easy hop, either a short domestic flight, an intercity train, or about a two-hour drive up the highway. If Pangkor Island is the goal, you'll head to the port town of Lumut instead, then jump on a short ferry across to the island.

Can I visit Pangkor Island as part of an Ipoh trip, or is it better as its own stop?

You can definitely do both in one trip since Lumut, the ferry port for Pangkor, is only around an hour and a half from Ipoh by road. Just don't try to squeeze it into a single day. Give Pangkor at least one overnight so you're not racing the last ferry back, and treat it as a genuine change of pace rather than a quick add-on.

Is Perak good for families?

Pretty good, yeah. Kids tend to love the cave temples at Perak Tong and Kek Lok Tong, since the giant statue and towering rock formations feel like a proper adventure without much walking involved. Pangkor's calmer beaches are also great for younger travellers who aren't up for big waves, and a lot of the mainland hotels have pools for downtime between sightseeing.

Do I need a car to get around Perak?

In Ipoh Old Town, you can walk to most of the food stalls, coffee shops, and street art without any trouble. To reach Kellie's Castle or the cave temples outside the city, though, you'll want a car rental or a Grab, since they're a bit of a haul from the centre. Over on Pangkor, the island's small enough that a rented scooter or a trishaw does the job.

Is English widely spoken in Perak?

Yeah, you'll get by just fine. English is widely spoken across Malaysia's tourism spots, and Ipoh's hotels, cafes, and tour operators are generally very comfortable with it. Pangkor's a bit more low-key, so simple English and a friendly smile go a long way at the smaller guesthouses and food stalls, even if it's not everyone's first language.

What currency is used, and can I pay by card?

You'll be spending Malaysian Ringgit (MYR). Cards work fine at hotels, malls, and bigger restaurants in Ipoh, but it's smart to carry some cash for the hawker stalls and street food that make up half the fun of visiting. You'll also need cash for the Pangkor ferry ticket, so grab some Ringgit before you head to Lumut.

Is Perak touristy?

Not in the packed, overrun sense. Ipoh gets a steady stream of domestic and regional visitors chasing its food scene, so the popular coffee shops and hawker spots can get busy on weekends, but it never feels like a tourist trap. Pangkor Island is even quieter, with long stretches where it's just you, the water, and not much else.
