I had a very pleasant stay at Tune Hotel KLIA2. The location is excellent—very close to the KLIA2 departure area, making it extremely convenient, especially for an early morning flight or a short transit stay. The room was clean, comfortable, and provided everything I needed for a good rest. The staff were friendly, helpful, and provided very good service throughout my stay. Overall, a comfortable and convenient hotel with great service and an unbeatable location for KLIA2 travelers. I would definitely recommend it and would be happy to stay here again.

More about hotels in Selangor

About Selangor accommodation

Selangor wraps entirely around Kuala Lumpur, and it's Malaysia's busiest state in its own right. Most flights into the country land at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, which actually sits in Sepang, not the capital. Beyond the airport, the state runs from Shah Alam's silver-blue mosque dome to the theme park slides of Sunway Lagoon and the bak kut teh stalls that made Klang famous.

Where you base yourself depends on why you're here. A KLIA stopover wants Sepang, a shopping and mall run wants Petaling Jaya, and a family day at the theme park wants Subang Jaya. Here's how the main areas stack up.

Where should you stay in Selangor?

  • Petaling Jaya: Selangor's dining and shopping hub, with malls like 1 Utama and Paradigm Mall and hawker strips such as SS2. The easiest base if a Kuala Lumpur day trip is also on the cards, with the city border just minutes away.
  • Shah Alam: The state capital, built around the Blue Mosque's dome and the evening light shows at i-City. Quieter than Petaling Jaya, with wide boulevards and its own shopping centres.
  • Subang Jaya and Bandar Sunway: Home to Sunway Lagoon's theme park and water park, with Sunway Pyramid mall right next door. The pick for families who want the rides within walking distance.
  • Klang: Selangor's old royal capital and a working port town, best known for the bak kut teh stalls that claim to have invented the dish. Little India's shophouses and the Port Klang ferry terminal are both an easy trip from most hotels.
  • Sepang: Home to KLIA and KLIA2, plus the Sepang International Circuit. The obvious base for a stopover or an early flight, with transit hotels built right into the terminals.

How much is Selangor accommodation?

A comfortable room in Petaling Jaya or Shah Alam averages around AU$55 to AU$75 a night, and airport hotels at Sepang run a little higher for the convenience.

  • Budget stays: From AU$15 per night. Simple rooms around Klang and Subang, still an easy trip to the malls or the port.
  • Mid-range hotels: From AU$45 per night. City hotels with a pool in Petaling Jaya or Shah Alam, often connected straight into a mall.
  • Business and convention hotels: From AU$90 per night. Bigger names with meeting space, gyms and a proper breakfast spread.
  • Airport and transit stays: From AU$60 per night. Rooms built into or right beside KLIA's terminals for an easy connection.

What is Selangor known for?

Your hotel is just the base. Here's what most visitors build the trip around.

  • Sunway Lagoon (Bandar Sunway): A theme park, water park and wildlife park packed onto one 88-acre site, with more than 150 species in its interactive zoo and one of the region's largest vortex waterslides. It's grown from a single water park in 1993 into one of Malaysia's biggest day-trip attractions.
  • The Blue Mosque (Shah Alam): The Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Mosque is known locally as the Blue Mosque for its silver-blue dome, one of the largest religious domes anywhere at over 50 metres across. Its four minarets rank among the tallest minaret groups in the world, and on a clear day the dome is visible from parts of Kuala Lumpur.
  • Klang's bak kut teh: A herbal pork rib soup that Klang locals claim as their own invention, served over rice with youtiao for dipping. The Jalan Besar strip near the old town has been serving it for generations.
  • Petaling Jaya's malls and food scene: From 1 Utama to Paradigm Mall, PJ has some of Selangor's biggest shopping centres, plus hawker institutions like the SS2 night stalls for supper after a day of browsing.
  • KLIA and the Sepang International Circuit: The country's main gateway airport shares its home state with the circuit that hosts Malaysia's biggest motorsport events, including MotoGP.

What are the best hotels in Selangor?

  • One World Hotel: Connects straight into 1 Utama in Petaling Jaya, so shopping and dining are a lift ride away rather than a taxi trip.
  • DoubleTree by Hilton Shah Alam i-City: Close to i-City's light park and a short drive from the Blue Mosque, with the chain's warm cookie waiting at check-in.
  • Sama Sama Hotel KLIA: Built into the KLIA terminal itself, so a tight connection or a delayed flight barely costs you more than a lift ride.
  • Wyndham Acmar Hotel: Central in Klang, an easy walk to the Jalan Besar bak kut teh strip and the shophouses of Little India.
  • Best View Hotel Sunway Mentari: A budget base a short trip from Sunway Lagoon and Sunway Pyramid, handy if the theme park is the main event and the room is just for sleeping.

Tips for booking a stay in Selangor

  • Pick your base on why you're here: Petaling Jaya or Shah Alam for malls and a city stay, Subang Jaya for the theme park, Klang for food and heritage, Sepang for a stopover.
  • Book Sunway-area rooms ahead during school holidays: Sunway Lagoon gets busy and nearby hotels fill up fast when Malaysian and Singaporean school breaks line up.
  • Build in traffic time: the Klang Valley's roads get congested at peak hours, so add extra time for any transfer between Selangor and Kuala Lumpur.
  • Check whether an airport hotel is landside or airside: some KLIA properties are only accessible after security, which matters if you're not flying that day.
  • Filter for a pool and aircon: Selangor's heat and humidity sit high year-round, and a decent pool matters more here than it might elsewhere.
  • Try bak kut teh for breakfast if you're near Klang: most stalls open early, and it beats a standard hotel spread.

Frequently Asked Questions about Accommodation in Selangor

Is Selangor worth visiting for an Australian traveller?

Yeah, definitely, especially if you're after more bang for your buck than downtown KL. You'll get theme park days, proper food strips and mall shopping without big-city prices, and it's an easy add-on if you're already flying into KLIA. Think of it as KL's laid-back neighbour rather than a headline destination on its own.

What's the best time of year to visit Selangor?

Selangor sits on Malaysia's west coast, so the driest stretches usually fall around December to February and again June to August. Outside those windows you're more likely to cop sudden downpours, though they tend to pass quickly. Timing your trip is really about dodging rain rather than chasing cooler weather, since it stays tropical no matter the month.

Do Australians need a visa to visit Malaysia?

Most Aussie passport holders can enter Malaysia visa-free for short stays, which covers the vast majority of holidays and stopovers. Rules can change though, so it's worth double-checking the current requirements with Malaysian immigration or your airline before you lock in flights, rather than going off what worked on a trip a few years back.

How do I get to Selangor from Australia?

Direct flights from Sydney, Melbourne and Perth land you straight into KLIA, taking roughly 7 to 8 hours depending where you leave from. From there, getting to your hotel is easy: a Grab ride, an airport shuttle, or the KLIA Ekspres train if you're heading towards Petaling Jaya or Shah Alam. No confusing transfers needed.

Is Selangor basically the same trip as Kuala Lumpur, or worth its own base?

Honestly, most people end up doing a bit of both, hopping between the two since they're so close together. Basing yourself in Selangor gets you cheaper rooms, easier theme park access and a calmer pace, while KL still covers the big-city sights nearby. Treat it less as an either-or and more as one trip with two bases.

Is Selangor good for families?

Yeah, it's a strong pick for families. Beyond the big theme park days, most family-friendly hotels nearby have their own pools, handy for downtime in between. Malls in Petaling Jaya and Shah Alam are stroller-friendly with loads of air-conditioned space, so a hot, tired afternoon with the kids isn't the dealbreaker it could be elsewhere.

Do I need a car to get around Selangor, or does the KL public transport network reach here too?

Depends on where you're staying. Petaling Jaya, Subang Jaya and Shah Alam are covered by LRT, MRT or KTM lines linking back into KL, so a car isn't essential there. Places like Klang or Sepang are trickier by rail, and you'll likely lean on Grab or a rental car for those legs instead.

Is English widely spoken in Selangor?

Yes, English is spoken widely and confidently across Selangor, especially in hotels, malls and anywhere tourism-focused. You'll get by just fine with English alone, though locals appreciate it if you pick up a "terima kasih" (thank you) here and there. Menus and signage tend to be bilingual too, so ordering food or finding your way isn't a hassle.

What currency is used in Selangor, and can I pay by card?

Malaysia uses the Ringgit (MYR), and cards are widely accepted at hotels, malls and most sit-down restaurants without any fuss. Hawker stalls, street food carts and smaller local outlets tend to be cash-only though, so keep some Ringgit on hand for those, plus small tolls or parking fees if you're driving yourself around.

Is Selangor touristy?

It's a mixed bag. Areas like Bandar Sunway and the big Petaling Jaya malls get genuinely busy with both locals and tourists, especially on weekends and school holidays. Other pockets, like residential parts of Shah Alam or Klang's back streets, feel far more everyday and local, so you can dial the crowds up or down depending on where you wander.

What are the best areas to visit near Selangor?

If you are in Selangor, you can also visit Hulu Selangor, Banting, Petaling, Tanjong Sepat, Klang, Sepang, Petaling Jaya, Rawang, Jenjarom, Shah Alam

What are the most recommended regions to be visited beside Selangor?

You can visit and enjoy your staycation in these popular regions such as Penang, Kuala Lumpur, Terengganu, Johor, Kelantan, Perlis, Sabah, Perak, Pahang, Kedah.

What are the most popular landmarks around Selangor?

The most popular landmarks in Selangor are Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (SZB), i-City Shah Alam, Batu Caves , Pulau Ketam, Sunway Lagoon Theme Park

How many hotels are listed in Selangor?

Currently, there are around 1,732 hotels that you can book in Selangor

What are the prices of hotels in Selangor?

Hotels in Selangor price may varies, but price start from AU$12/night
