Very good, there is a hair dryer, clean bathroom, slippers, drinking water, the bed is 100% soft, sleep well, clean accommodation, very delicious breakfast, many menus to choose from, like having breakfast at home, bicycles to borrow, not far from Saphan Bun and the national park, can walk, near the market and 7-11, very impressed. If going to Sukhothai, will definitely go back to stay again, highly recommended, try to stay for 1 night and it's so good that you have to stay for a whole week.

More about hotels in Sukhothai

About Sukhothai accommodation

Sukhothai is a quiet slice of central Thailand where accommodation sits close to a genuinely remarkable UNESCO World Heritage site, without the crowds or price tags you'd find in Bangkok or Chiang Mai. Most travellers base themselves either right by the historical park for easy morning access, or in the newer town a short ride away, where the guesthouses, noodle stalls and night market keep things lively after dark.

Whether you're after a simple guesthouse room with a fan and a bike out front, or a proper resort with a pool to cool off in after a day exploring the ruins, Sukhothai's accommodation options are relaxed, good value and easy to book, with most places set among gardens or rice fields rather than busy streets.

Where to stay in Sukhothai

  • Old City (Mueang Kao): the area right beside Sukhothai Historical Park, best for travellers who want to walk or cycle to the ruins at dawn or dusk without a long transfer; quieter at night with fewer dining options.
  • New Sukhothai: the modern town centre around 12km east, with a wider choice of restaurants, the night market and bus connections, plus easy tuk-tuk or bike rides out to the park.

How much is Sukhothai accommodation?

  • Budget: AU$15-35, a clean guesthouse or hostel room with a fan or air-con, often with bikes available to borrow or rent.
  • Mid-range: AU$55-110, a resort-style room with a swimming pool, garden setting and breakfast included, some within walking distance of the park entrance.

What Sukhothai is known for

  • Sukhothai Historical Park: a UNESCO World Heritage-listed park of 13th-century ruins, famous for its distinctive lotus-bud-shaped chedis and large seated Buddha statues, several set on islands surrounded by lotus ponds that mirror the stupas at dawn and dusk.
  • Sunset cycling among the ruins: the park's shaded, flat roads make it one of the easiest historical sites in Thailand to explore by bike, with bicycles for hire near the entrance and temples appearing around almost every bend.
  • Loy Krathong: Sukhothai is widely regarded as the birthplace of this much-loved festival of lights, when small floral lanterns are floated across the ponds and canals alongside sky lanterns, live music and fireworks.

Top-rated hotels in Sukhothai

  • Sriwilai Sukhothai Resort & Spa: a garden resort a short drive from the historical park with a large pool, spa and views over surrounding rice fields.
  • Sukhothai Treasure Resort & Spa: a well-rated resort blending modern comfort with traditional Thai styling, close to the ancient city.
  • Thai Thai Sukhothai Resort: a traditionally designed property near the park entrance, popular for its spacious rooms and attentive service.
  • Baan Suk Sukhothai: a family-run guesthouse set in relaxing gardens away from the main road, with a pool and a laid-back atmosphere.

Travel tips for Sukhothai

  • Hire a bicycle for the day, it's the easiest and most enjoyable way to cover the park's scattered temple zones.
  • Visit early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat and catch the best light over the lotus ponds.
  • Dress modestly (covered shoulders and knees) when visiting temple areas within the park.
  • Book accommodation well ahead if travelling during Loy Krathong, when the town's rooms fill up quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions about Accommodation in Sukhothai

Do Australians need a visa to visit Sukhothai?

Australian passport holders can enter Thailand visa-free, though the exemption is changing from 60 days to 30 days for entries from 15 September 2026 onwards, with a one-time 30-day extension available at an immigration office for a small fee. Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months and check current entry requirements before you fly, since rules can change. This applies to Sukhothai the same as the rest of Thailand, as there's no separate regional visa.

Which area of Sukhothai is best for families?

New Sukhothai suits families well thanks to its choice of restaurants, the night market and easy tuk-tuk trips out to the historical park, while a mid-range resort with a pool near the Old City gives kids somewhere to cool off after temple-spotting. Cycling the flat, shaded park roads together is one of the more family-friendly ruin visits in Thailand. Look out for family or interconnecting rooms, which are common at the resort-style properties.

When is the best time to visit Sukhothai?

The cool season from November to February is the most comfortable time to visit, with mild mornings that suit exploring the historical park by bike before the heat builds. March to May gets very hot, so plan visits for dawn or late afternoon if travelling then. The rainy season from June to October brings short afternoon downpours but also greener surrounds and fewer crowds.

How do you get to Sukhothai from Australia?

There are no direct flights from Australia, so the usual route is flying into Bangkok and connecting on Bangkok Airways, the only carrier flying direct into Sukhothai Airport (around 1 hour 20 minutes). Alternatively, fly into Chiang Mai and take a bus of around 5 hours, or fly into Bangkok and catch a bus straight through, around 7 hours. Some travellers take an overnight train from Bangkok to Phitsanulok and finish the trip by shared minivan.

What are the top luxury hotels in Sukhothai?

Sukhothai Heritage Resort is a favourite for its traditional Thai architecture and quiet garden setting close to the historical park. Ananda Museum Gallery Hotel stands out for its boutique, art-gallery styling, a point of difference from the area's more traditional resorts. Both offer a step up in design and service from the town's guesthouses without straying far from the ruins.

What are the top things to do in Sukhothai beyond the ruins?

Wat Si Chum is worth building into any itinerary, home to a 15 metre seated Buddha statue framed inside a narrow gap in its walls, one of the most photographed sights in the park. The Ramkhamhaeng National Museum, right by the park entrance, gives useful context on the artefacts and architecture on show around the grounds. History-minded travellers can also make a half-day side trip to Si Satchanalai, a quieter sister site around an hour north.

Is Sukhothai good for nightlife?

Sukhothai isn't a nightlife destination, and that's part of its appeal for travellers after a quieter pace. New Sukhothai's night market and walking street are the main evening draw, with street food stalls, local snacks and a handful of relaxed bars. If you want livelier nights out, save them for Bangkok or Chiang Mai before or after your Sukhothai stop.

How much should you budget per day in Sukhothai, on top of accommodation?

Historical park entry is charged per zone rather than one combined ticket, with the Central Zone around AU$9 and the Northern and Western zones around AU$5-6 each, plus a small bicycle surcharge. Bike hire outside the park runs about AU$1.50-2.50 a day, and a seat on the Central Zone tram is a couple of dollars more. Add local food from around AU$2-3 a dish and short tuk-tuk rides, and most travellers get by comfortably on AU$20-30 a day outside their room rate.

How many days do you need in Sukhothai?

One full day is enough to cycle the Central and North Zones of the historical park at an easy pace, but two days gives you time to add Wat Si Chum, the museum and a slower start to dodge the midday heat. Travellers combining it with a Si Satchanalai side trip should plan on a third day. It's a compact destination, so most visitors don't need more than two or three nights.

Is Sukhothai suitable for older travellers or those with limited mobility?

Yes, with some planning. The Central Zone's paths are flat and sealed, and hop-on hop-off electric trams and chauffeur-driven golf carts are available for a small fee if cycling or walking long distances isn't comfortable. Choose accommodation in the Old City to cut down on transfer time, and visit in the cooler morning hours to make the heat easier to manage.
