Jetstar Airways is the Australian low-cost airline of the Qantas Group. It flies under the IATA code JQ and the ICAO code JST, which is why many travellers simply search for "JQ" when they want its flights. The airline is headquartered in Melbourne, and Melbourne Airport (MEL) is its main hub. Large bases at Sydney (SYD), Brisbane (BNE) and the Gold Coast (OOL) support a busy network across Australia, New Zealand and the wider Asia-Pacific region.
Jetstar is wholly owned by Qantas, but it runs on a very different model from its parent. The idea is simple. The ticket covers your seat and a small carry-on allowance, and you add only the extras you actually want, such as checked bags, a chosen seat, a meal or more flexibility. Travellers who pack light and keep their plans fixed can keep their trip lean, while those who need more can build it up piece by piece.
That approach has made Jetstar one of the most familiar names in Australian air travel. It links the country's big cities with frequent domestic flights, carries holidaymakers across the Tasman Sea to New Zealand, and flies long-haul services to leisure destinations in Asia and the Pacific. On Traveloka you can search Jetstar flights, compare departure times and fare options side by side, and receive your e-ticket by email and in the Traveloka app once payment is complete.
The airline's story starts with an existing operator. Qantas bought Impulse Airlines in 2001 and flew it under the QantasLink name for a time. In 2003 the group decided to launch a dedicated low-cost brand and rebuilt that business as Jetstar. The first Jetstar passenger flights took off on 25 May 2004, initially on domestic Australian routes.
From that domestic start, Jetstar steadily grew outward. Flights across the Tasman to New Zealand became a core part of the network, followed by routes to holiday destinations in Southeast Asia, Japan and the Pacific. The arrival of the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner gave the airline a wide-body aircraft for its long-haul sectors. In 2022 Jetstar took delivery of its first Airbus A321LR, a long-range narrow-body jet that opened up medium-haul routes without needing a wide-body aircraft.
A few points help explain how the airline works today:
The low-cost formula has stayed the same from the beginning. A simple base fare, optional extras and a high number of flights on busy routes remain the heart of how Jetstar sells its seats.
Jetstar keeps its fleet simple, which helps keep costs down. Almost every flight is operated by one of two aircraft families: the Airbus A320 family for short and medium routes, and the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner for longer international flying.
Because the A320 and A321 share a cockpit design and many parts, crews and engineers can move between them easily. For passengers, the cabin is a familiar single aisle with three seats on each side.
The Dreamliner is Jetstar's long-haul aircraft and the only type in the fleet with a Business cabin. It is used on longer international routes, including flights to Japan and other destinations in Asia and the Pacific. The 787 is known for a quieter cabin, larger windows, higher humidity and a lower cabin altitude, all of which make a long flight a little less tiring.
Jetstar uses Viasat for satellite Wi-Fi on equipped 787 aircraft. The exact cabin layout on your flight depends on the aircraft assigned, so check the seat map during booking.
Jetstar's network rests on three pillars: a dense domestic grid in Australia, trans-Tasman flights to New Zealand, and leisure routes to Asia and the Pacific. Bali is one of the airline's best-known international destinations, served from several Australian cities. These are some of the routes you can search on Traveloka:
Beyond these routes, Jetstar flies to many other Australian cities and to destinations in New Zealand, Japan, Thailand and the Pacific. Schedules change with the seasons, so search your exact dates on Traveloka to see which flights are operating.
Baggage is where Jetstar's add-on model matters most. What you can bring depends on the fare and any bundle you choose, so it is worth checking before you pack.
If 7 kg is too tight, extra carry-on allowance can be added to a booking, taking the combined total to 14 kg. No single carry-on item may weigh more than 10 kg.
A plain Starter fare does not include any checked baggage. You can buy an allowance of 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 or 40 kg, and 40 kg is the most one passenger can purchase. Some bundles include checked baggage, and Business fares include 30 kg.
Jetstar carries common sports gear such as golf clubs, bicycles, surfboards, skis and snowboards. In most cases these count toward your checked allowance, and some bulky or fragile items also attract a handling fee. Pack them in a proper bag or case and add the right allowance before you travel.
Jetstar works to firm cut-off times, and late passengers can lose their seat. Knowing the deadlines makes the airport much less stressful.
Online check-in through the Jetstar website or app opens 48 hours before departure. You can confirm your details, see your seat and save a mobile boarding pass to your phone. If you only have carry-on bags and no documents to check, you can head straight to security. Travellers with checked bags still need to visit the bag drop.
Many larger airports also have self-service kiosks and automated bag drops, which can be quicker than a staffed counter. Give yourself extra time in school holidays and at busy airports, where security queues can be long.
Most Jetstar flights have a single Economy cabin. Business is offered only on the Boeing 787-8, which flies the longer international routes.
Every Economy booking starts with a Starter fare. On top of that, you can choose a bundle that groups popular extras together. Bundles such as Flex and Flex Plus add things like seat selection and the freedom to change flights, and some include checked baggage. If you prefer, you can skip the bundles and buy single extras on their own.
If you do not choose a seat, one is allocated for you before departure.
Jetstar Business is a recliner-style cabin in a 2-3-2 layout, with more width and legroom than Economy. It is closer to a premium economy seat than to a lie-flat bed, but it makes a real difference on a long flight. Business fares include a larger carry-on allowance and checked baggage.
Meals and drinks are not part of the base Economy fare. You can buy snacks, meals and drinks on board, and on many flights you can pre-order a meal when you book. Short-haul aircraft have no seat-back screens, so download films and shows to your own device before you fly. On equipped 787 aircraft, Viasat Wi-Fi is available, with paid options in Economy.
Jetstar does not offer an unaccompanied minor service. The airline does not provide staff to supervise children on their own. A young passenger can travel independently only if they are attending or enrolled in secondary school and can show proof of this at check-in. Younger children must fly with a suitable accompanying passenger.
From 28 weeks of pregnancy, you need a letter or certificate from your doctor or midwife confirming that it is safe to fly. How late in pregnancy you can travel also depends on the length of the flight and whether you are expecting one baby or more. Check the rules for your exact route before booking.
Pets cannot travel with Jetstar, either in the cabin or in the hold. Recognised service dogs, such as guide dogs, hearing dogs and mobility assistance dogs, can travel in the cabin with the right documents. Emotional support animals are not accepted.
Travellers who need a wheelchair, have reduced mobility or plan to carry medical equipment should arrange this with the airline well before the flight. Telling Jetstar early gives staff time to prepare the right help at each airport.
How easily you can change a Jetstar booking depends on the fare and bundle you bought. The basic rule is that more flexibility comes with the higher bundles.
Starter fares are generally non-refundable. Some bundles let you cancel before the change deadline and receive a credit voucher instead of cash, which can then be used on a new Jetstar booking for the same traveller. If the airline cancels or significantly changes your flight, you can choose another flight or ask for a remedy under the conditions of carriage.
If you booked with Traveloka, open the app or website and go to My Booking. Select your Jetstar ticket to see which change and refund options apply, then follow the steps on screen. Any fees and fare differences are shown before you confirm.
Traveloka puts Jetstar's schedules alongside the wider flight market, so you can see the whole picture in one search.
With a low-cost airline, the price you pay depends a lot on how you book. A few habits make a real difference.
Before you fly, check in online with Jetstar from 48 hours before departure and keep an eye on the cut-off times at the airport. That way your trip starts smoothly.
