Lufthansa flights and the LH code

Lufthansa uses the airline code LH. When comparing a ticket, identify the airline operating every flight as well as the airline marketing it. A Lufthansa flight number can be sold on a partner-operated segment, and that segment may use a different cabin, baggage or airport process.

Frankfurt and connecting travel

Lufthansa's San Francisco–Frankfurt route page provides one international example. San Francisco airport lists Lufthansa's nonstop Frankfurt service. Search your own city pair rather than assuming every European destination has a Lufthansa nonstop from the United States.

Review the onward flight's airport, operator and connection time. A U.S. domestic segment may be flown by a partner, so the itinerary should not be described as domestic service operated by Lufthansa. Include transfer time and the arrival date when comparing a cheaper connection with a more direct option.

Economy fares: the Basic name needs context

Lufthansa's Economy Basic guide distinguishes short- and medium-haul travel from long-haul. On short- and medium-haul flights, Basic includes a small personal item and excludes the normal overhead cabin bag and checked suitcase. Do not apply that baggage rule to a long-haul fare merely because it has the same name.

Compare the inclusions actually displayed for the itinerary. A cheaper flight that needs a suitcase, cabin bag or preferred seat added may cost more than another fare. Flexibility is also a separate consideration: assess voluntary-change and cancellation rules rather than assuming a bundle name establishes a free refund.

Lufthansa carry-on size and weight

The current carry-on guide gives the personal item a maximum size of 40 × 30 × 15 cm. An included standard overhead piece is up to 8 kg and 55 × 40 × 23 cm. Long-haul Economy and Premium Economy include one such overhead piece alongside the personal item.

Business and First normally allow two 8 kg overhead pieces plus the personal item, with a one-overhead-piece restriction for departures from the United States. Apply the operating airline's rules on partner flights. An eligible size does not establish that an overhead bag is included in short-haul Basic.

Checked baggage: Light differs by cabin

Lufthansa's free-baggage guide lists long-haul Economy Light without an included checked bag, compared with one 23 kg piece in standard Economy. Premium Economy Light has one 23 kg piece rather than the standard two; Business Light has one 32 kg piece rather than the standard two.

Short- and medium-haul Economy Basic and Light exclude checked baggage, while Comfort, Comfort Green and Flex include one 23 kg piece. Use the issued ticket for the actual journey and applicable benefits. Standard checked-bag dimensions are 158 cm in total; two pieces do not permit one suitcase to exceed its own weight limit.

When adding baggage, confirm the allowance for all relevant segments and keep the purchase confirmation. A through itinerary may still require collection for customs or an airport change. Separate tickets need their own baggage and onward check-in arrangements.

Seats and the cabin on each segment

Choose the cabin and fare for the experience and flexibility you need. A premium seat on the long-haul segment does not establish the same layout on a shorter connecting flight. Read the aircraft and seat-selection options for each part of the itinerary.

A standard seat, preferred location and extra-legroom seat can have different prices or entitlements. Travelers wishing to sit together should select available adjacent seats where the fare permits instead of relying only on a shared booking. An aircraft substitution can change the layout and assignment, so review later booking notices.

Lufthansa online check-in

Lufthansa's online check-in service opens 30 hours before departure for eligible flights. Use the airline booking code or ticket details and passenger information from your issued booking. Partner flights can require the operating airline's service.

Save the boarding pass when the check-in process provides it and follow any remaining counter instructions. A digital pass does not remove bag drop or travel-document checks. Use the departure airport's current deadlines and allow time to reach the gate rather than treating the online window as an airport-arrival recommendation.

Manage a Lufthansa booking made on Traveloka
