KLIA is in Sepang, Selangor, about 45 km south of central Kuala Lumpur.
The KLIA Ekspres train runs non-stop to KL Sentral in about 28 minutes from Terminal 1, and a few minutes longer from Terminal 2.
Terminal 1 mainly serves full-service airlines such as Malaysia Airlines. Terminal 2, formerly called klia2, serves AirAsia and other low-cost carriers.
KLIA is the home base of Malaysia Airlines and a major hub for AirAsia. Many international airlines also operate from the airport.
The Aerotrain is an automated train at Terminal 1 that links the main building with the satellite terminal, where many international flights depart.
Yes. The satellite terminal at KLIA Terminal 1 has a small natural rainforest in the middle of the building, reflecting Malaysia's tropical landscape.
Yes. KUL is the IATA code for Kuala Lumpur International Airport, which is commonly called KLIA. Both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 share the KUL code.

Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL), widely known as KLIA, is Malaysia's main international airport and one of the busiest in Southeast Asia. It was officially opened in June 1998, replacing Subang as the capital's principal gateway. KLIA is the home base of Malaysia Airlines and a major hub for AirAsia, which gives travellers a wide spread of both full-service and low-cost options.
The airport is not in Kuala Lumpur itself. It sits in Sepang district, Selangor, around 45 km south of the city centre. Putrajaya and the Sepang motor racing circuit are both nearby, and the drive to central Kuala Lumpur follows a fast expressway.
KLIA has two passenger terminals. Terminal 1, the original building, was designed by Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa and is used mainly by full-service airlines, including Malaysia Airlines. An automated Aerotrain carries passengers from the main building to the satellite terminal, where a patch of real rainforest grows in the middle of the concourse. Terminal 2, known as klia2 when it opened in 2014, handles AirAsia and other low-cost carriers. Always check which terminal your airline uses, because the two are some distance apart.
Dozens of airlines operate here, with flights across Malaysia, Asia, the Middle East, Europe and Australia. Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia together carry a large share of traffic, while many international carriers serve Terminal 1. The mix of routes means KLIA works well both as a starting point and as a place to connect.
In the city, the Petronas Twin Towers, Batu Caves and the food streets of Bukit Bintang are the classic first stops. Closer to the airport, Putrajaya's lakeside government buildings and mosques make an easy half-day trip.
Confirm your terminal the day before you fly. If you take the train, remember that Terminal 1 is the first stop from the city and Terminal 2 the last. International departures from Terminal 1 may also require the Aerotrain ride to reach your gate, so build that into your timing.
