Hotels.com verified review

We booked a twin room, described as being located off a courtyard with its own independent entrance. On arrival, my adult son and I found the hotel itself to be pleasant and well-presented. Unfortunately, when we got to our room, it contained a double bed rather than the twin room we had booked. It was also upstairs within the back end of the hotel, and not off the courtyard I spoke to reception and was told there were no twin rooms available. The manager couldn’t explain why we’d been allocated a double room, although there was apparently a twin room available for guests arriving later. When I pointed out that I was already there, I was told those guests had booked directly with the hotel, whereas I had booked through Hotels.com. Fair enough, but it does suggest there may be advantages to booking direct if you want the exact room you’ve reserved. To their credit, staff tried to resolve the issue by providing a Z-bed. Unfortunately, when my son lay on it, it became clear that several springs were missing, making it unusable. Rather than spend the weekend arguing, we did the very British thing, kept a stiff upper lip, and shared the double bed. In the end, it didn’t spoil what had been a trip we’d been looking forward to for over 12 months. At around £300 per night during Download Festival weekend, I was expecting a more premium experience than was delivered. That said, I appreciate that accommodation in the area commands a premium during the festival.

Very dated and tired furnishings. Strange skylight in the bathroom which was full of cobwebs and dead moths. One of the drawers still had the previous occupant's belongings in. Lock on the bedroom door was very loose and temperamental. Staff seemed friendly. Hotel location was very convenient and we had a good night's sleep.

Stayed at Donington Manor as a base to attend Download festival and as such the hotel is in a great location, a 20 to 30 minute walk to the arena or a £5 Uber. The staff were very polite & helpful and and the room was very spacious. Unfortunately due to the festival the price was 5 times higher than normal and as such when you are paying over £300 a night expectations will naturally be higher. The room was dated and tired with damp and mould, we had to share the room with an army of spiders and moths, paint was peeling from the walls and ceiling in the bathroom and the shower was grubby with no pressure and only useable by anyone under 5 foot. The breakfast when it arrived was very tasty however as the hotel was full due to the festival it took 2 hours to be served on one day and my partner didn’t even get hers on the other day. Hotel needs updating and to be better prepared for an annual event that they are happily charging for.

Very handy for me as I wanted to be near to Donington Park race circuit. Very friendly, but did not do food even though said they did bar snacks. Not a problem as Castle Donington has an abundance of places to eat. Has had many racers stay there over the years including very famous ones.

The staff and main building were excellent; however, I was in courtyard in an annex out of shot of lovely sales picture. It was an accessible needs room (I assume due to hotels.com booking) but no cheaper than direct booking. The tv was on a shelf at ceiling height so difficult to watch unless standing. The tap fell off but luckily slotted back on and worked with care. The room door was an internal stable type door so had no insulation or sound proofing meaning people accessing a storage room next door seemed to be in the room along with phone conversations. It was also slightly concerning to come back and find a Land Rover in court yard partially blocking room access followed later by listening to engine ticking over . In fairness for what I wanted the hotel served its purpose; however, for slightly more and an uber ride I could have got sound proofing from airfield plus a pool. It all boiled down to a taxit and convenience

Whilst the online check in worked, the room was comfortable but needs a refresh as a little outdated. As it was a 'quiet period' the reception was not manned and although an emergency number was given - not to be used between 12am and 6am! As a solo female traveller not the best scenario but all ok.

Nice location, staff were friendly. Hotel is tired and the stairs could do with re gripping as a slight hazard (lots of old winding stairs to get to your room) bathroom light didn’t work, reported but not replaced. Bed was ok, pillows a little flat. However, I could be over critical here as it was grand for us for our stay. Didn’t eat, so cannot comment on food, however the chef was out the front doing a bbq style cook out which looked great. Very close if you have download tickets and there was a free shuttle bus to donnington park right outside the hotel.

Donington Manor Hotel could do with modernisation and renovation work. It is a quirky place with character. Parking + check-in were fine. Went to dinner across from the hotel at Castle Inn which was lovely. Was booked into room 11 (twin) and my room was not clean at all - not talking about a little dust. There were many cobwebs, spent about 10 minutes removing spiders in the main room and the bathroom. Bathtub had black bits in it, 1st bed had markings on the bedding, 2nd bed had markings in the bed. Bedside drawer handle was broken. Even with the instructions to lock the door, I couldn't tell from the inside whether the door was locked. I was travelling solo so made me feel unsafe and uneasy. Charging points nowhere near the bed/accessible, even with a long charging cable. I spoke with staff at reception to ask for my money back as I wished to leave the hotel due to these conditions, they offered to show me other rooms first. First few were just as unclean as my room and the next couple were OK but didn't have any charging points near the bed so wasn't suitable for me. The last room they showed me did have charging points by the bedside and was, for the most part, clean enough that I felt like I could sleep there - there were still bits around the room that had built up dust but the room was a lot cleaner than my initial room and had a much better locking mechanism on the door. I agreed to move to that room but I will not be returning. I do NOT recommend!
