A rather old fashioned, maybe even quirky, hotel. It has undergone extensive refurbishment over the past few years. We always stay in a superior sea view room so I can’t comment on the others, although I know the family rooms are good. Good choice of breakfast items. A long list of cocktails at the bar but I haven’t sampled them. Ideal location for events on Southsea Common.

We only stayed a short time but everything was great so much so that I would very much like to come and stay again if you still allow dogs. Would it be possible to book a single room for the night of the 17 July. Kind regards Jill White

The staff at check in were really welcoming, the check in process was quick and easy. The room on the 3rd floor was nicely decorated, comfy bed and good shower. Would definitely stay again.

We chose this hotel because we were at a nearby wedding and it was easily walkable. The staff were really helpful at reception and offered to store our luggage as our room wasn’t ready(1pm so didn’t expect it to be). We were told where we could get changed and all was good. We eventually checked in about 11pm and went to our room which was a lot smaller than we expected. However we were only staying overnight so thought we could live with it. Our room overlooked the seafront which was a bonus. Our issue was the state of decor in the room. The paint was peeling off the walls, the bath had rusty chips out of it and at one point must have had a handle on it which had been removed and filled badly with sealant. The shower curtain was black at the bottom and the carpet was heavily stained (window side particularly). We paid a reasonable amount for this room and as such felt it did not come up to expectations… especially when other wedding guests said we were going upmarket in comparison to themselves who were at the premier inn! Sadly, I don’t think we will be staying again as it is a lovely setting but let down by the room

Room was modern and well maintained. Housekeeping staff were very efficient. Bar staff needed help at busy times and the drinks were rather expensive, especially when you had to wait. !

The staff were very nice and helpful. The main areas of the hotel are pleasant and the hotel was clearly once a very grand building. The superior double room we had was a bit tired but the main problem was the heat. It was facing the afternoon sun and it had been a hot day. No attempt had been made to draw the curtains to keep the heat out so as a result the room was absolutely stifling. The window would only open about 2 inches so no fresh air could get in overnight. The young man on reception was very kind and let us use the fan from reception but even with that it was incredibly warm as we were just blowing hot air around the room. We tried leaving the room door open into the corridor for a while but this made no difference. Breakfast was good and the staff were helpful but I strongly advise them to ask the cleaners to drawer the curtains in the rooms on the sunny side of the building and provide better fans in each room.

This is easily the best hotel in Portsmouth- best location, easy included parking out front on. there own grounds. Large, traditional old hotel, but well kept. 24 hour bar for residents. Upmarket restaurant. One major drawback - no aircon in the bedrooms or the hallways stairs etc.: a big problem if you are there during a heat wave -36! - as I was. I would still book again though, but only in cooler weather.

Not a great entry way from the carpark, up the sweeping staircase carrying luggage then a fight to get the door open. A beautiful hotel especially the grand vestibule. Great reception staff efficient and friendly. We were in room 359, top floor, (splendid view) which was particularly hot during the May heatwave but room fans were provided. The beautifully refurbished bathroom however was the worst layout we've ever experienced. The door into the generous sized room, clashed with the rather small shower cubicle, which had nowhere to put shower toiletries except the floor. The only other storage area was a small glass shelf over the hand basin in exactly the right forehead cracking position. The strangest was the double toilet roll holder, which was placed just above the toilet cistern thus completely out of reach just when it was needed, unless you are a contortionist. The breakfast serving staff told us that they were tired and they were all obviously fed up, demoralised even, but the breakfast was great.

Always clean and reception staff helpful. There was a wedding so a bit noisy and better to have been situated in rooms further away from the party but rooms comfortable and clean

Room was clean, but a little smelly after running the tap. Wardrobe was ridiculously small, like an armoir rather than a wardrobe. My dresses didn’t fit. Luckily radiator in bedroom was adjustable as it was very warm. Heaps of tea and coffee but we had to pop our fresh milk onto the windowsill outside as no fridge in room. Staff were excellent Slept well despite what appeared to be someone playing (badly) the last post on a cornet, down the hall.
