More about Stuttgart

Stuttgart in Germany is unique because of its ability to combine two things that have never been married before: cars and culture. Stuttgart is known as the home of Mercedes-Benz and Porsche. These two iconic brands are so closely tied to the history of Stuttgart that they have their own museums that have become one of the most visited places in the city.

Stuttgart Castle

However, Stuttgart is more than just the luxury cars that it is known for all around the world. It has a beauty of its own that can be found in the gentle hills that surround the city and the one-of-a-kind vineyards surrounding the city.

Tourists are always left in awe by the Neues Schloss also known as the New Palace, the Altes Schloss (The Old Palace) and Schillerplatz. Germany is also a country that is etched with a rich royal history and most of which can be enjoyed in Stuttgart. They are also known for their art and have many galleries that both art and non-art enthusiasts alike.

How to Get There

Stuttgart has an airport aptly called Stuttgart Airport. Stuttgart International Airport is the sixth busiest airport in Germany. Getting to the city centre from the airport is made easy by the S-Bahn. The service that directly connects the airport terminals to the city centre.

It's so convenient because the airport has an underground station. The trip from the airport to the city centre via the S-Bahn takes about 30 minutes but if you take Stadtmitte, it would take about 25 minutes. On weekdays, the train arrives every ten minutes.

Getting Around

Public transportation in Stuttgart, like any other parts of Europe, is convenient and fairly easy to navigate. There are also many options to choose from when it comes to going around Stuttgart.

One option is the yellow-coloured U-Bahn, which is also known as Stadtbahn or Straßenbahn. It literally translates to light rail or tram. Despite its name, tourists must know that it is not a subway.

The U- Bahn runs within the city borders and its surrounding areas. You can purchase your ticket when you enter the light rail using a ticket machine. Validating the ticket (only needed if you buy a ticket for four trips) can be done inside the tram.

If you wish to go further, you may use the S-Bahn commuter train that runs longer distances and connects you to nearby cities such as Esslingen, Bietigheim-Bissingen, Herrenberg, Filderstadt, and other towns. There are also buses, rideshares, and yes, the use of bikes all over Stuttgart making it one of the easiest places to travel to.

Top Things to Do

One of the most popular places to visit is Staatsgalerie. The art museum that started in 1843 is still housed (partly) but its original Neoclassical building. It received its Postmodern update in the 1980s and holds 20th-century art by Matisse, Picasso, Salvador Dali, Franz Marc, and Joan Miro. It is also filled with painting and sculpture from the 1800s featuring Renaissance and Baroque masters such as Rubens, Rembrandt, and Hans Memling.

Meanwhile, it is always worth visiting the museums of Porsche and Mercedes -Benz and how well their history is integral to the history of Stuttgart as well.

Enjoy royalty as well as your love for nature and animals by visiting Wilhelma Zoological - Botanical Garden. Located inside the grounds of royalty, it’s a great way to enjoy outdoor time in a new city. First landscaped as a pleasure park during the reign of William I, it eventually opened to the public in 1880 and became a zoo following damage in the war. Today, there are more than 1,000 species at the zoo and have great apes like chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans.

It also has steamy Amazon House and grows 2,000 plant species among habitats for mammals, reptiles, and fish. Its botanical garden has one of Europe’s largest magnolia grove and boasts of thousands of orchid species and dozens of varieties of camellia and azalea.

Kunstmuseum Stuttgart

Another landmark one shouldn’t miss is the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart that is located on the southwest corner of Schlossplatz. It’s a beautiful modern landmark that is a reflective glass cube by day and showcases beautiful limestone walls behind the glass. As with anything in Stuttgart, it has galleries and makes use of a 5,000 square-metre of disused tunnels in an extremely mystical way.

Another must-see place is The Solitude Palace. Located on a ridge to the west of Stuttgart is a residence and hunting retreat that was purchased in the 18th century by the Duke of Wurttemberg, Charles Eugene. It can be likened to Berlin’s Sanssouci, which is noted as a divine escape for the duke during his time. It offers the same solitude to those who visit it to this day.

What to Eat

Bretzel

It is not true that Germany can only boast of bratwurst and bretzel. Stuttgart offers everything from traditional to modern. Stuttgart is known for its cuisine and offers everything from classic to modern international cuisine that every tourist enjoys. With so many choices, you must visit Wielandshohe, Feinkost Bohm, Weinstube Fröhlich, and Carlas Brauhaus.

Nightlife

Don’t let the quiet town fool you because Stuttgart radiates a different kind of night time scene with something for everyone. They have everything from bars, discotheques, theaters, local live music, and bars. Focus is on beer and electronic music that reverberates through the street making it a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Street partying is quite popular in Stuttgart. One of the most popular festivals is the Oktoberfest Stuttgart as well as Frühlingsfest.

Where to Stay

Tuebingen Stuttgart

There are many beautiful places to stay in Stuttgart - one for every kind of traveler. If you are visiting for the first time, you should stay at Bad Cannstatt which is located just outside the central districts. Its proximity to the central districts makes it the best place to acquaint yourself with the city.

There are many hotels in Stuttgart that are also in this area. If you are on a budget, you can stay in Stuttgart-Ost and if you are there to party, you can visit Stuttgart-Mitte.
