Sausages and beer? Yes, Bavaria is famous for those two, but the region has more to offer. There are lots of rural villages to visit if you want to escape the crowds or take a scenic trip to visit Bavaria's numerous castles. But if it's your first time, be sure to come in by October to take part in Oktoberfest.

About Bavaria

Bavaria

Bavaria may sound like a villain’s lair but the sound of mystery in its name is always demystified once you set foot in the region and that brings it to another level of charm for some tourists. There are no questions on why Bavaria is a top pick for a lot of visitors. It has everything one could ask for---rich cultural traditions, rich heritage, wonderful people. Bavaria is a recommended spot for both solo and group travelers who want an adventure in Germany.

How to Get There

There are various ways to get into Bavaria. The top choice will always be by flying through one of the many airports surrounding the region including Munich, Nuremberg, Frankfurt, Salzburg, and Augsburg. Since Bavaria is such a tourist destination, there are key areas considered as a holiday region. For these areas, the Frankfurt and Salzburg airports are recommended points of entry for easier access.

Each airport has a train line that goes directly to the town proper. They also offer cabs and car rental arrangements for those who prefer a more comfortable ride to the town proper. Bavaria is also accessible via train going in and out of neighboring areas.

Getting Around

Like many areas in Germany, Bavaria’s default way of travelling is by bus. It is the easiest way to get around local and rural areas. It is also the cheapest option and would usually be the top choice for tourists. However, the bus lines in Bavaria are limited when it comes to travelling to cities outside Bavaria. For this kind of travel, visitors opt for either train or car.

Bavaria also offers rides via tram. There are options to buy weekly and monthly tickets. These tickets are usually cheaper than single-use tickets and most companies even offer a student discount.

Trains are a popular choice especially for long-distance travel from one city to another. The great thing about travelling via train is that if you are in a larger group, you may opt to buy a ticket good for up to 5 people to travel anywhere via train. This is definitely a cheaper option than buying single-traveler tickets.

Cars and taxis are available everywhere in Bavaria. Surprisingly, cycling is also a part of transportation in the region. Bike sheds are peppered across the region to help cyclists. It is a popular mode of transportation, especially for students who live near universities.

Top Things to Do

Bavaria has a lot to offer. A great start is to visit Garmisch Partenkirchen. The quaint towns were a product of merging two alpine villages for the Winter Olympics in 1936. Each of the towns still has their personality and character whilst offering a gorgeous view of the Alps. Skiing is also a great way to spend the day here as it is also the quickest way to take in the view and ski right to Munich’s borders.

Fussen Bavaria

The romantic town of Füssen, however, is dedicated not just to lovers, but also for those who are interested in the town’s rich history as one of the oldest places to have a violin-making industry. They also have the Romantic Road, a 700-year old vacation destination in the area and the best one there is as well. For those looking for more of the history, the Füssen Heritage Museum is a great place to see how it all began for the town.

Visitors also flock to Regensberg. Not only is it a more vibrant space than its neighbors, but it also has maintained its medieval looks and makes for great photos that make it look like you’ve been transported to another world. The town was also the first capital of Bavaria and the list of museums will help tourists understand its rich history.

Even for museums, there is just a tier that makes the museum just a tad bit cooler. In this case, the BMW World and BMW Museum is the best example of a museum just cooler than any other museum in the area. They are one of the most popular attractions in Bavaria. It is also a great stop for the kids as they offer fun and interactive learning for youngsters.

Lastly, visit Lake Chiemsee for a fun day of cooling down and playing with adults and kids alike. It is the perfect way to just relax after visiting all the amazing places in Bavaria. An extra feature is that they do not have a time limit on sessions so you can play and relax as long as you want.

What to Eat

A trip to Germany is not complete with a cold glass of beer. To get the best one, visitors must visit the town of Riedenburg in Lower Bavaria. The first brewery in Germany to become fully organic is situated here and the revolution of the current design of the beer glass was made here.

Bavarian Milk and Cheese

Bavaria’s pride also lies in their milk and cheese. So much so that they have a whole street dedicated to it, the Bavarian Milk and Cheese Road. The street has a total of 68 businesses and offers some of the best milk and cheese products in the world. It is worth visiting for an amazing experience of cheese coma!

What’s amazing about Bavaria is the great experience you have combining adventure and gastronomy. One of the best examples of this is the Fruit Tree Hike. Spanning a length of 5.3 to 10.8 kilometers, this hike goes through multiple villages to discover the treasures of nature. There are multiple towns and restaurants where you can stop in between to taste local Bavarian snacks while taking in the beauty of the countryside.

Nightlife

Another example of gastronomy and adventure combined are the wine walks. Wine walking tours are quite popular in Franconia and are a great way to stretch your legs while sipping wine and learning about the region. The route of the walk is peppered with vineyards and unique landscapes and makes for a remarkable experience.

Where to Stay

Bavaria Town

The great thing about Bavaria is the uniqueness of experience for each traveler. While you can stay in one of the hotels available, you can also opt for a different experience. When staying in the region, one will get different experiences based on just how adventurous you are.

Bavaria offers farm stays. It sounds as straightforward as what it is called. If you want to experience the farm life and get your hands dirty like a local farmer in Germany, here is your chance! Wake up with the clucking of hens and feast on the freshest food harvested straight from the soil right beside where you are staying. You are not required to do any manual labor but its all part of the experience should you opt to.

Aside from offering fun times, Legoland Gunzburg also offers accommodation. Stay in the middle of the fun and not worry about being late to the lines. It is a great option for families with kids. If you are up for a more natural and scenic stay, opt for camping. There are 420 camping sites located all across Bavaria and each of the sites maintains a high standard of cleanliness and safety.

Travel Tips

  • Purchase your train tickets in advance especially if travelling in a group.
  • Foodies should visit smaller family restaurants instead of big-name restaurants to get the best experience.
  • Fans of swimming should visit Bavaria in July or August when the temperature is great for swimming.

Sure Hotel by Best Western Muenchen Hauptbahnhof
The hotel is very close to the main station. This is the first hotel after about 10 years of travelling who gave me physical key (not card) 😀 which baffled me at first. Room was clean, comfort was adequate (the pillows were super thin and it was double bed made by 2 single beds). Bathroom was super small (the curtain type). I think this hotel is okay for short stay and if you’re gonna spend most of your time outside.
