My stay here was very pleasant. The staff was friendly, and I even received complimentary cookies from the hotel. The food was varied and delicious, and was always refilled when it ran out. Check-in is required at 2 PM, and check-out was quite fast. The bedroom and bathroom were clean. It was great. I hope Arthama continues to be successful. I will probably stay here again if I ever visit Makassar 👍👍👍

More about hotels in Losari Beach

Losari Beach: A Gateway to South Sulawesi's Coastal Charm

Losari Beach, situated in Makassar, Indonesia, presents a compelling destination for international travellers seeking a blend of vibrant urban life and coastal allure. Unlike the more serene island retreats, Losari Beach offers a dynamic introduction to South Sulawesi's rich cultural heritage and bustling port city atmosphere. Its expansive coastline, particularly the iconic Losari Beach itself, serves as a central hub for local life, providing a unique vantage point to observe daily routines, from early morning fishing activities to the lively evening promenade. This accessibility to authentic Indonesian life, coupled with a growing tourism infrastructure, makes it a distinct choice for those venturing beyond the usual tourist trails.

The character of Losari Beach is not monolithic; it unfolds across distinct neighbourhoods, each offering a different facet of the city's personality. From the bustling commercial heart near the waterfront to more tranquil residential pockets further inland, the choice of where to base oneself significantly influences the travel experience. Understanding these variations is key for international visitors, as it dictates proximity to key landmarks like the Centre Point of Indonesia (CPI), access to diverse culinary scenes, and the overall pace of their stay. Losari Beach invites exploration, rewarding those who delve into its varied districts.

For the global traveller, Losari Beach emerges as a remarkably value-conscious destination. With an average starting price of just USD 2.79 per night and an impressive overall review score of 8.4 from over 92,000 reviews, it offers significant affordability without compromising on the quality of experience. This makes it particularly attractive for budget-conscious travellers from India and Africa, while also appealing to value-seeking visitors from the United States and Europe who can stretch their travel budgets further, allowing for more exploration and longer stays.

The accommodation landscape in Losari Beach mirrors its diverse appeal, ranging from budget-friendly inns to more upscale hotels. For instance, Aerotel Smile Losari offers a comfortable mid-range option, while Swiss-Belhotel Waterfront Makassar provides a more premium experience with its waterfront views. These properties, among many others, cater to a wide spectrum of international preferences and budgets, ensuring that travellers can find a suitable base to explore the city. Through Traveloka, travellers can easily book hotel accommodations that align with their needs.

Losari Beach is a destination that resonates with a broad international audience. American travellers might be drawn to its adventure potential and the opportunity to explore a less-trodden part of Indonesia. Europeans, with their keen interest in culture and history, will find ample opportunities to engage with local traditions and historical sites. Indian families often seek destinations offering good value, connectivity, and familiar culinary influences, all of which Losari Beach can provide. For travellers from African nations, its regional proximity within Southeast Asia and its growing connectivity can make it an accessible and intriguing choice.

Best Areas to Stay in Losari Beach

Losari Beach, while a single coastal stretch, encompasses a variety of districts, each with its unique atmosphere and appeal for international visitors. Selecting the right neighbourhood is crucial for tailoring your Indonesian adventure, influencing everything from your daily commute to the local flavours you encounter. Understanding these distinct areas will help you pinpoint the perfect base for exploring the city's landmarks, including the prominent Centre Point of Indonesia (CPI), and immersing yourself in its vibrant culture.

Losari Beach Waterfront

This is the classic Losari Beach experience, defined by its iconic promenade and the constant buzz of activity. For international visitors, it offers immediate access to the city's most famous landmark and a lively atmosphere, especially in the evenings. Travellers from India and other parts of Asia might find the energetic street life and readily available local eateries particularly appealing. The proximity to the sea and the constant flow of people create a captivating environment that is both visually stimulating and culturally immersive.

Staying along the waterfront means you're steps away from street food vendors selling local delicacies and traditional snacks. It's also a prime location for accessing boat tours and enjoying sunset views over the Makassar Strait. The Centre Point of Indonesia (CPI) is easily reachable from here, offering modern attractions. For those looking to explore further, taxis and ride-sharing services are abundant, making it convenient to book attractions or visit other parts of the city.

Panakkukang

Panakkukang represents the modern commercial and residential heart of Makassar, offering a different pace from the bustling waterfront. This area is characterized by its shopping malls, modern apartment complexes, and a more contemporary urban feel. It's an excellent choice for travellers from Europe and the United States who appreciate convenience, a wider selection of international and local dining options, and a sense of order. The area provides a comfortable and familiar environment while still being distinctly Indonesian.

Within Panakkukang, visitors can find large shopping centres like Panakkukang Mall, offering a variety of retail and dining experiences. The district is also home to numerous cafes and restaurants catering to diverse tastes. While not directly on the coast, it offers good connectivity to other parts of the city via main roads. Public transport and ride-hailing services are readily available, making it easy to reach Losari Beach or the airport, and it’s a good base for those who prefer a more structured urban exploration.

Old Town (Kota Tua) / Dutch Quarter

For travellers with a deep interest in history and colonial architecture, the Old Town area, often referred to as the Dutch Quarter, is a compelling choice. This district offers a glimpse into Makassar's past, with remnants of Dutch colonial influence visible in its buildings and street layout. European travellers, in particular, often gravitate towards such areas, seeking historical context and a more atmospheric setting. It provides a stark contrast to the modern developments elsewhere in the city, offering a more contemplative experience.

Exploring the Old Town allows visitors to discover historical landmarks, old government buildings, and charming, albeit sometimes weathered, colonial-era houses. Local eateries serving traditional Makassar cuisine can be found tucked away in its streets, offering an authentic taste of the region. While public transport might be less direct here, the area is walkable, and taxis can easily be hailed to connect to major thoroughfares. It’s a place for leisurely strolls and discovering the layers of Makassar's history.

Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport Vicinity

For travellers prioritizing convenience and ease of access, particularly those with early morning departures or late-night arrivals, staying near Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport (UPG) is a practical decision. This area is ideal for transit passengers or those who prefer to minimize travel time to and from the airport. Travellers from Africa, especially those on regional flights, or any international visitor on a tight schedule, will find this location highly beneficial for seamless travel logistics.

Accommodation options in this vicinity range from budget-friendly guesthouses to airport hotels offering shuttle services. While it lacks the immediate charm of the waterfront or historical districts, it provides essential amenities and quick access to transportation hubs. Dining options might be more limited to airport facilities or nearby local warungs. This area is best suited for short stays or as a practical base for onward travel, ensuring a stress-free start or end to your Indonesian journey.

Tamalate

Tamalate offers a more local residential feel, providing a quieter alternative to the bustling city centre while still maintaining good connectivity. This district is suitable for travellers from all source markets who seek a more authentic, less tourist-centric experience and wish to observe daily Indonesian life. It’s a good option for those who prefer to stay slightly away from the main tourist crowds but still want easy access to key areas like Losari Beach and the Centre Point of Indonesia (CPI).

In Tamalate, you'll find a mix of local markets, smaller eateries, and community spaces. It’s a place where you can experience the everyday rhythm of Makassar. While it may not have the high-end shopping or extensive entertainment options of other districts, it offers a genuine slice of local life. Getting around is best facilitated by ride-sharing apps or local taxis, which can quickly connect you to the main attractions or the airport. It’s a neighbourhood for the curious traveller wanting to explore beyond the typical tourist path.

Food & Dining in Losari Beach

A Taste of Makassar: Culinary Delights by the Sea

Losari Beach, and Makassar more broadly, is renowned for its distinctive culinary scene, deeply influenced by its history as a major trading port and its diverse ethnic makeup. A must-try is Coto Makassar, a rich, spiced beef soup often served with burasa (a type of rice cake), which offers a hearty and flavourful introduction to local cuisine. Another iconic dish is Pallubasa, a similar but distinct beef offal soup. For seafood lovers, the fresh catches grilled or prepared in various local styles along the waterfront are unparalleled. These dishes showcase the unique spices and cooking methods that set Makassar apart within Indonesia.

The best places to savour these flavours are often found along the Losari Beach promenade itself, where numerous food stalls and small restaurants offer an authentic street-food experience. As dusk settles, the waterfront comes alive with vendors serving grilled fish, seafood satay, and local snacks like Pisang Epe (grilled bananas with palm sugar sauce). For those seeking Halal options, which are abundant given Indonesia's Muslim majority, most local eateries and restaurants clearly indicate their offerings. Areas like Panakkukang also provide a wider range of dining, from local warungs to more contemporary cafes.

Dining in Losari Beach offers remarkable value for international travellers. Street food and local warungs can provide a filling meal for as little as USD 2-5 per person. Mid-range restaurants typically charge between USD 5-15 per person for a full meal, including drinks. Even more upscale dining experiences, often found in hotels or specialized restaurants, might range from USD 15-30 per person, offering a stark contrast to prices in the US or Europe. This affordability allows visitors to explore a wide variety of local dishes without significant financial strain.

When dining in Losari Beach, embracing local customs enhances the experience. It's common to eat with the right hand, though utensils are readily available. Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for excellent service, usually around 10%. Be prepared for a more relaxed approach to time; meals can be leisurely affairs. Learning a few basic Indonesian phrases like "Terima kasih" (thank you) and "Enak sekali" (very delicious) will be well-received by local restaurateurs and staff, adding a personal touch to your culinary journey.

Local Etiquette & Safety in Losari Beach

Navigating Cultural Nuances and Ensuring Personal Safety

Understanding local customs is key to a respectful and enjoyable visit to Losari Beach. Indonesians, in general, are known for their politeness and hospitality. It's customary to greet people with a smile and to use your right hand for giving and receiving items, as the left hand is sometimes considered unclean. When visiting religious sites, modest dress is essential, covering shoulders and knees. While Losari Beach is generally welcoming, being mindful of local sensitivities, particularly regarding public displays of affection, is advisable for all international visitors.

When visiting prominent landmarks like Losari Beach and the Centre Point of Indonesia (CPI), maintaining respectful behaviour is paramount. Dress modestly, especially when interacting with locals or visiting areas with a strong community presence. Photography is usually permitted, but it's always polite to ask permission before taking close-up photos of individuals. Queuing culture is generally observed, but patience is a virtue in any bustling Indonesian environment. Adhering to these simple guidelines ensures positive interactions and a smoother travel experience.

For practical safety in Losari Beach, exercising common sense is crucial. Keep valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas. For transportation, ride-hailing apps like Grab are widely available and offer a reliable and relatively inexpensive way to get around, often more so than traditional taxis. It's wise to have a local SIM card for easy data access. While Losari Beach is considered safe for tourists, it's always prudent to avoid walking alone in poorly lit or unfamiliar areas late at night.

In case of emergencies, the local police number is typically 110. For medical assistance, dial 118 for an ambulance. The nearest embassies for key source markets include the US Embassy in Jakarta, the British Embassy in Jakarta, and the Indian Embassy in Jakarta. For African travellers, checking with their respective embassies in Indonesia or neighbouring countries for consular support is recommended. Ensuring you have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies is a vital precaution for any international trip.

Travel Guide to Losari Beach

Your Essential Guide to Reaching and Navigating Losari Beach

Reaching Losari Beach involves flying into Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport (UPG), Makassar's primary gateway. For travellers from the United States, expect long-haul journeys with at least one stopover, typically in major Asian hubs like Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, or Doha, with total travel times often exceeding 20 hours from cities like New York (JFK) or Los Angeles (LAX). European travellers from London (LHR) or Frankfurt (FRA) will also face similar transit times and connections.

Indian travellers from Mumbai (BOM) or Delhi (DEL) will find routes via Kuala Lumpur or Singapore efficient, usually around 10-15 hours. For travellers from Africa, flights from Nairobi (NBO) or Lagos (LOS) will likely involve multiple stops and longer durations, potentially 15-25 hours, often connecting through the Middle East or Southeast Asia. From UPG, the city centre and Losari Beach are approximately a 30-45 minute drive, depending on traffic. You can easily book flight tickets well in advance for better pricing.

Navigating Losari Beach and its surrounding areas is relatively straightforward, thanks to a mix of transport options. Ride-hailing apps like Grab are ubiquitous and offer affordable car and motorcycle taxi services, providing clear pricing upfront. Traditional taxis are also available, but it's advisable to ensure the meter is used or to agree on a fare beforehand. For shorter distances within neighbourhoods, walking is often pleasant, especially along the waterfront. Public buses (angkot) operate on fixed routes and are extremely cheap, though they can be crowded and may require some local knowledge to use effectively. For travellers seeking convenience, hiring a car with a driver for a day can be a cost-effective way to explore multiple attractions.

The best time to visit Losari Beach generally falls during the dry season, from May to September. During these months, the weather is typically sunny with lower humidity, making it ideal for exploring the city and enjoying outdoor activities along the coast. The shoulder months of April and October can also be pleasant, with fewer crowds and potentially lower hotel prices. While the wet season (November to March) brings more rainfall, showers are often brief, and the city remains accessible, offering a more budget-friendly option for travellers from India and Africa.

Before departing for Losari Beach, ensure you have the essentials covered. The local currency is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR), though USD may be accepted in some larger hotels and tourist establishments; however, it's best to have local currency for daily expenses. Purchasing a local SIM card at the airport is highly recommended for data access, enabling the use of navigation and ride-hailing apps. Essential apps include Google Maps, a translation app, and the Grab app. While Indonesia does not require specific city registrations for tourists, always carry your passport and visa documentation.

Visa Information for Indonesia

Entering Indonesia to Visit Losari Beach: A Guide for International Travellers

For travellers planning to visit Losari Beach, understanding Indonesia's visa requirements is crucial. US passport holders can typically enter Indonesia visa-free for tourism purposes for up to 30 days, provided their passport is valid for at least six months beyond their stay. European travellers (including UK, German, and French citizens) generally benefit from the same visa-free entry policy for short tourist stays.

Indian passport holders are also eligible for visa-free entry for tourism for up to 30 days, subject to passport validity. For travellers from many African nations, including Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa, a visa on arrival (VOA) is often available for tourism for up to 30 days, which can be extended for another 30 days. However, it is always recommended to verify the latest regulations for your specific nationality.

The process for obtaining a visa on arrival, where applicable, typically involves presenting your passport at the immigration counter upon arrival at Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport (UPG). You will need a passport valid for at least six months, a return or onward ticket, and potentially proof of sufficient funds. Fees for the VOA are usually around USD 35 and are payable in USD or local currency. While visa-free entry does not require pre-application, travellers should ensure their passport has sufficient blank pages for entry and exit stamps. It is advisable to have hotel booking confirmations readily available.

Visa policies and regulations can change, and it is imperative for all international travellers to verify the most current requirements with the official Indonesian immigration authority or the Indonesian embassy in their home country well before their travel dates. Confirming your specific visa status and any necessary application procedures before booking flights is a prudent step to avoid any last-minute complications. This proactive approach ensures a smooth and stress-free entry into Indonesia for your visit to Losari Beach.
