Italy is definitely more than the hustle and bustle of its major cities. To get to know it more, you need to visit other locales like the eastern side of the Emilia Romagna region of Italy where you can find the fishing village of Cesenatico. Built on a man-made canal designed by Leonardo da Vinci himself, this town stuns with colourful boats and beautiful marine views. It also offers a good look at Italy’s life near the sea and it offers plenty of seafood dishes that would surely fill you up.
You can get to Cesenatico via two airports: Federico Fellini Airport in Rimini and Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport in Bologna. If you want a faster way to get to Cesenatico, you should opt to fly to Rimini. From here, a train is available for you to take and the travel time should be 30 minutes. The bus takes longer at 50 minutes.
If you decide to fly in Bologna, the fastest way would be to have a hired car since it would take about an hour to reach the city. However, if you want to opt for public transport, the train is available. Travel time is three hours while the bus takes four.
Once you arrive in the village, it wouldn’t be hard to go around granted that it’s pretty compact. Bus lines are available throughout the area and it should already take you to the central all the way to its beaches. However, there are also places in the city where travel is limited to only walking. It’s advised to just walk around since most parts are already pedestrianized.
Cesenatico doesn’t fall short on things to do once you’re here. It’s a place where you can enjoy history, food, and the sea all in one. Get to know the town more by visiting the Piazza Pisacane. You will find a statue of the famous military man, Giuseppe Garibaldi here. He has been a popular figure in Italian history because of his efforts to unite the country.
Being a city, whose culture is built on its maritime history, it would be a great opportunity to visit the Maritime Museum. While here, you will notice that this is divided into two locations with one part operating on land and the other on the sea. You will see the famous fishing boats that fishermen in Cesenatico use, a trabaccolo and a bragozzo boat. You will also be able to see clips of how life was on these boats whenever they took it out to fish before.
For a more modern artwork of the city, you can go to The Tents on the beach. It has been around for 20 years in the city and it was first designed to shade the locals from the sun. While still serving that purpose especially on summer days, it also doubles as an exhibition that locals and tourists come to admire.
Activities also differ in the city depending on the season you visit. In case you arrive during the summer months, you will see the coast of Cesenatico dotted with umbrellas because of the locals who have come to enjoy and bask under the sun next to the Adriatic. For the months of October or November, the town holds a festival called Il Pesce Fa Festa and it is always packed with people. If you are a foodie, this would be a must for you since it showcases numerous seafood options that are cooked and flavored in different ways.
For a small town, Cesenatico still packs a lot for eating and drinking. It goes without saying that for a fishing village, your first stop should be trying out some fresh seafood. It is highly recommended to drop by the Osteria del GranFritto where you can always enjoy the fresh catch for the day. If you’re in a rush, you can also enjoy it as a takeaway in paper cones filled with deep-fried seafood. The sister restaurant of Terrazza Bartolini is also another restaurant if you want to dine with a view. Whenever you can, make sure to have the specialty of the area which is grilled sardines.
Seeing that the village is having a tourist boom, many hotels and hostels have appeared in the area. When you’re visiting, keep in mind the dates of the festivals and the season since it gets busy around the summer. A lot are options with a view of the canal of the sea. There are also newly opened ones that would offer a more luxurious and relaxing stay for you.
