Promenade has always been my hotel of choice when in Kota Kinabalu due to its strategic location. Ambiance is great and much has been done to upgrade the facilities at Promenade. For me, it's home away from home.

Super super pretty place to stay! I love everything about this place. The room got a very nice ambiance, super clean, comfortable, spacious, and the bed is very soft. The staff were very warm too! Their pool is open until 9pm which is nice because usually hotel pools only open until 7pm. I rate it 100/10, recommended to stay! ❤️

More about hotels in Sabah

Sabah: Where Nature's Grandeur Meets Island Adventure

Sabah, often called the "Land Below the Wind," presents a compelling proposition for international travellers seeking an authentic slice of Southeast Asian natural beauty and adventure. Unlike the more urbanised centres of Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah offers a raw, untamed allure, centred around its dramatic mountains, pristine coastlines teeming with marine life, and ancient rainforests that echo with the calls of exotic wildlife. This unique blend of ecological wonders and thrilling outdoor pursuits makes it a distinct draw for those looking beyond typical tourist trails. The sheer diversity within Sabah itself is a significant part of its appeal, offering varied experiences depending on where you choose to base yourself. From the bustling coastal hub of Kota Kinabalu, serving as the gateway to island paradises and Mount Kinabalu, to the wildlife-rich jungles surrounding Sandakan, and the more laid-back vibes of Penampang or Tanjung Aru, each locale provides a different lens through which to view the state. Even smaller towns like Beaufort and Tawau offer unique regional flavours and access to specific natural attractions, ensuring that your stay is shaped by your chosen environment. For travellers from the United States and Europe, Sabah represents exceptional value, especially when considering the quality of natural experiences available. With starting prices for accommodation as low as USD 7.14 per night, it offers an accessible entry point to world-class diving, trekking, and wildlife encounters. This affordability allows for extended stays or the ability to splurge on unique activities, making it an attractive destination for those who appreciate getting more for their travel budget without compromising on the richness of their adventure. The accommodation landscape in Sabah mirrors its diverse offerings, ranging from budget-friendly apartments to luxurious hotels. For instance, the Promenade Hotel Kota Kinabalu, a well-regarded 4-star property, offers a comfortable base with excellent amenities, while the Promenade Service Apartment provides a more self-sufficient option for longer stays. These examples highlight the range of choices available, ensuring that travellers can find a lodging that perfectly suits their needs and budget, whether they are looking to book hotel stays or more unique apartment rentals. Sabah truly caters to a global palate of travellers. American adventurers will find ample opportunities for adrenaline-pumping activities and unique wildlife encounters. European visitors, often keen on cultural immersion and historical context, will appreciate the indigenous heritage and the chance to explore diverse ecosystems. Indian families can find value-packed options suitable for group travel, with convenient connectivity and a variety of culinary experiences. Meanwhile, travellers from Africa might find Sabah's regional connectivity and its natural wonders a refreshing and accessible international destination.

Best Areas to Stay in Sabah

Sabah is a vast and varied state, and choosing the right neighbourhood or district to stay in can significantly shape your travel experience. From the vibrant urban energy of Kota Kinabalu to the nature-focused enclaves, each area offers a distinct atmosphere, catering to different interests and travel styles. Understanding these nuances is key for international visitors aiming to maximise their exploration of Sabah's natural wonders and cultural richness.

Kota Kinabalu City Centre

The Kota Kinabalu City Centre is the bustling heart of Sabah, a dynamic urban hub that serves as the primary gateway for most international visitors. It's a place where modern amenities meet the vibrant pulse of local life, offering a convenient base for exploring both the city's attractions and the surrounding natural beauty. This area is particularly appealing to travellers who appreciate easy access to shopping, dining, and transport links, making it a popular choice for those arriving from the US, Europe, and India. From this central point, you have direct access to key landmarks like the Suria Sabah Shopping Mall, a modern retail complex offering a wide array of goods and dining options. Jesselton Point, the main ferry terminal, is also within easy reach, providing seamless connections to the stunning Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park for island hopping and water sports. The city centre's accessibility makes it an ideal starting point for day trips and excursions, allowing visitors to easily book attractions and explore the region's diverse offerings.

1Borneo

Located slightly north of the main city centre, the 1Borneo area is known for its large-scale commercial and residential developments, offering a more contemporary and self-contained experience. It's particularly attractive to travellers who enjoy having extensive shopping, entertainment, and dining options within close proximity, often found in large integrated complexes. This area can appeal to families and younger travellers from India and Africa looking for modern conveniences and a lively atmosphere without being in the immediate hustle of the downtown core. The main draw here is the 1Borneo Hypermall, one of the largest shopping centres in Borneo, featuring a vast selection of retail outlets, a cinema, and numerous food courts and restaurants. While it might be slightly removed from the immediate waterfront attractions, it provides a different kind of urban convenience. Getting to and from the city centre is straightforward via taxi or ride-sharing services, making it a practical choice for those who prefer a modern base with all amenities at hand.

Sandakan

Sandakan, located on the east coast of Sabah, offers a distinct experience focused on wildlife and nature, moving away from the urban feel of Kota Kinabalu. It's a crucial destination for ecotourists and nature enthusiasts, particularly those interested in orangutans and proboscis monkeys. This area is a strong draw for European travellers and American adventurers who are specifically seeking immersive wildlife encounters and a deeper connection with Sabah's natural heritage. Key attractions include the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre and the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre, offering unparalleled opportunities to observe these fascinating creatures in a semi-wild environment. Sandakan also serves as a gateway to the Kinabatangan River, renowned for its biodiversity and river cruises that reveal an incredible array of wildlife. For those interested in these unique natural experiences, Sandakan provides an authentic glimpse into Borneo's rich ecosystems.

Penampang

Penampang, situated just south of Kota Kinabalu, is a district with a strong Kadazan-Dusun cultural identity, offering a more local and authentic feel compared to the main city centre. It's an area where traditional heritage is palpable, with opportunities to learn about the indigenous culture of Sabah. This district can appeal to European travellers interested in cultural immersion and those from India seeking a more grounded experience away from the main tourist crowds, offering a glimpse into the local way of life. Visitors can explore cultural villages, local markets, and learn about the unique traditions of the Kadazan-Dusun people. Penampang also hosts various local eateries and craft shops, providing a chance to sample authentic Sabahan cuisine and purchase local handicrafts. Its proximity to Kota Kinabalu means that urban conveniences are still easily accessible, offering a balanced experience between cultural exploration and modern comfort.

Tanjung Aru

Tanjung Aru is a popular coastal district located very close to Kota Kinabalu International Airport, known for its beautiful beach and relaxed atmosphere. It offers a pleasant blend of natural scenery and urban accessibility, making it a favoured spot for both locals and tourists. This area is particularly attractive to travellers from India and Africa looking for a seaside retreat that is conveniently located for arrivals and departures, as well as for enjoying sunset views and local seafood. The Tanjung Aru Beach itself is a major draw, especially in the late afternoon and evening, when it comes alive with food stalls, families, and people enjoying the sea breeze. It's a great place to unwind after a day of sightseeing or before heading to the airport. The district also features various resorts and eateries, providing a comfortable and scenic environment for visitors seeking a more tranquil stay near the city's main transport hub.

Beaufort

Beaufort is a district located inland from Kota Kinabalu, known for its agricultural landscapes and its role as a gateway to the interior of Sabah. It offers a more rural and serene experience, appealing to travellers seeking to escape the coastal bustle and explore the less-visited parts of the state. This area might attract a niche group of travellers from Europe or the US looking for authentic rural experiences and a slower pace of life, away from the typical tourist circuits. The main draw of Beaufort is its proximity to natural attractions like the Padas River, which is popular for white-water rafting, and its surrounding paddy fields and jungle terrains. It provides an opportunity to experience a different side of Sabah, one that is deeply connected to the land and its traditional ways of life. Accommodation here tends to be simpler, reflecting the district's more rustic charm.

Tawau

Tawau is a major town on the southeastern coast of Sabah, serving as a significant economic hub and a gateway to several important natural attractions, most notably the islands of Sipadan, Mabul, and Kapalai, which are world-renowned for diving. This makes Tawau a prime destination for diving enthusiasts from all over the globe, including dedicated divers from the US and Europe. Its convenient location also makes it a point of entry for those exploring the eastern parts of Sabah. Beyond its diving fame, Tawau offers a glimpse into a bustling port town with a diverse population and a vibrant local market. Visitors can explore the town's culinary scene, which features fresh seafood and local delicacies. The surrounding areas also offer opportunities for exploring plantations and natural landscapes, providing a different perspective on Sabah's economy and environment compared to the more tourist-centric areas.

Penampang (Cultural Focus)

While Penampang was mentioned for its cultural identity, it warrants further emphasis as a distinct area for those seeking an authentic cultural immersion. This district is the heartland of the Kadazan-Dusun people, Sabah's largest indigenous group, and offers a diverse mix of traditions, festivals, and heritage sites. It's an area that particularly resonates with European travellers interested in anthropology and local customs, as well as Indian travellers looking for a deeper understanding of Malaysia's diverse ethnic makeup. Visitors can explore the Monsopiad Cultural Village, which showcases traditional longhouses and cultural performances, or visit the Sabah State Museum (though technically in Kota Kinabalu, its exhibits often focus on Penampang's heritage). The district's local markets are excellent places to sample traditional foods and interact with the community. Penampang provides a more intimate and educational experience of Sabah's indigenous roots, away from the more commercialised tourist spots.

Travellers from the US and Europe, in particular, often choose Tawau as their base for dedicated diving expeditions, valuing its proximity to these world-class marine environments. The town offers a range of accommodations, from budget-friendly guesthouses to more comfortable hotels, catering to divers preparing for or returning from their underwater excursions. The availability of dive operators and the ease of arranging boat transfers to the famous diving spots are key advantages for those prioritising marine exploration.

Expanding on the 1Borneo area, its identity as a self-contained entertainment and retail district makes it a unique proposition. This locale is ideal for travellers who prefer to have a comprehensive range of activities and amenities within a single, modern complex. It can be particularly appealing to families and younger travellers from India and Africa who are looking for a hassle-free environment with plenty of entertainment options, such as cinemas, arcades, and a wide variety of food choices. The sheer scale of the 1Borneo Hypermall means that visitors can spend days exploring its offerings without needing to venture far. While it might lack the immediate natural or cultural immersion of other areas, it provides a comfortable and convenient base with modern facilities. Its accessibility via taxi or ride-sharing services ensures that connections to other parts of Kota Kinabalu and beyond are readily managed, offering a different kind of urban convenience.
