Travel with mom Your mom is very pleased. The exterior of the hotel might not look very attractive. But when entering the area that is checked in, it feels very beautiful. Good atmosphere, cool weather, not hot. The staff are lovely. Smile everyone Always waiting to cooperate Breakfast is very good. Looks clean, organized, appetizing. Open from 7am to 10am. Inside the room is also very good. Pleasant place to sleep. There is a fridge. The bathroom is also fine. So there is soap, shampoo, conditioner, shower cap, staff refilled every day There are bicycles to borrow to ride on the side park. (A wide courtyard used to be an old airport before) too. Overall, I really like it. Next time I come to Chiang Rai, I will definitely come here again.

Travel Guide

Reaching Mae Kon from major international hubs involves a flight to the nearest international airport, typically Chiang Rai International Airport (CEI), followed by a short transfer. For travellers from the United States, flights from New York (JFK) or Los Angeles (LAX) usually involve one or two layovers in major Asian hubs like Seoul, Tokyo, or Bangkok, with total travel times ranging from 20 to 30 hours. European travellers from London (LHR) or Frankfurt (FRA) will also find connections through Bangkok or other regional centres, with journeys typically lasting 15-25 hours.

Indian travellers from cities like Mumbai (BOM) or Delhi (DEL) can find relatively convenient routes, often with a single stop in Bangkok, making the journey approximately 8-12 hours. For travellers from Africa, such as Lagos (LOS) or Nairobi (NBO), flights will almost certainly involve multiple layovers, often through the Middle East or a major Asian hub, leading to longer travel durations of 20-35 hours. Upon arrival at CEI, a taxi or pre-booked transfer to Mae Kon takes approximately 30-45 minutes. Booking your book flight in advance is recommended for better pricing.

Navigating Mae Kon itself is straightforward, with a mix of local transport options. Songthaews, which are shared pick-up trucks, are a very affordable way to travel between different parts of the region, costing roughly USD 0.50-1.00 per ride. Taxis and ride-hailing apps like Grab are also readily available, offering more direct and comfortable journeys for approximately USD 3-7 depending on the distance. For exploring local neighbourhoods, renting a scooter can be an option for experienced riders, but caution is advised due to local traffic conditions.

The best time to visit Mae Kon generally falls within the cool, dry season from November to February, offering pleasant temperatures and minimal rainfall, ideal for outdoor activities. March to May marks the hot season, with temperatures soaring, while the rainy season runs from June to October, characterized by intermittent downpours that can affect travel plans but also bring lush greenery. Hotel prices tend to be highest during the cool season and around major Thai holidays.

Before departing for Mae Kon, ensure you have local currency (Thai Baht) readily available, though USD is accepted in some tourist-oriented establishments. Purchasing a local SIM card at the airport is highly recommended for data access, enabling the use of navigation and communication apps. Essential apps include Google Maps, a translation app, and the Grab ride-hailing service. While Thailand is generally welcoming, having a printed copy of your hotel booking and onward travel details can be useful for immigration.

Visa Information

For travellers planning to visit Thailand and subsequently Mae Kon, visa requirements vary significantly based on nationality. US passport holders typically enjoy visa-free entry for tourism purposes, usually allowing stays of up to 30 days, which can often be extended. European travellers from countries like the UK, Germany, and France also benefit from similar visa exemptions for short tourist stays, generally permitting up to 30 days without a pre-arranged visa.

Indian passport holders often face more specific regulations; while visa-free entry is sometimes available for short durations, many may require a visa on arrival or an e-visa, depending on current bilateral agreements and the purpose of their visit. It is crucial for Indian nationals to verify the latest requirements well in advance. Travellers from African nations, including Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa, will find that visa requirements are generally more stringent, with most requiring a pre-arranged visa obtained from a Thai embassy or consulate before travel.

The application process for visas typically involves submitting a completed application form, a valid passport with at least six months of remaining validity, passport-sized photographs, proof of onward travel (such as a return flight ticket), and sometimes evidence of sufficient funds or a hotel booking. Fees vary by nationality and visa type, and it is imperative for all travellers to confirm the exact requirements, processing times, and any specific documentation needed directly with the Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate in their home country or the nearest one.
