The hotel is in the post-pandemic period so there are not many guests, the buffet breakfast is not attractive because it is served at the table, the number of dishes is limited, the cooking is not very good. The room quality is good, the interior is beautiful, the city view. Seeing the bustling Thanh Nien Cultural House preparing for Tet also makes me feel excited. The service staff is cheerful and professional. Worth the experience.

Food & Dining in Ho Chi Minh City

Ho Chi Minh City is a culinary destination, renowned for its vibrant street food culture and diverse gastronomic offerings that reflect Vietnam's rich culinary heritage. Iconic dishes like Phở, the aromatic noodle soup, Bánh mì, the flavourful baguette sandwich, and Gỏi cuốn, fresh spring rolls, are staples that every visitor must try. The city's food scene is a dynamic interplay of traditional flavours and modern innovation, offering an exciting journey for the palate that distinguishes it from other Vietnamese cities.

Exploring the city's food landscape is best done by diving into its bustling markets and dedicated food streets. Ben Thanh Market is a popular spot, though often more tourist-oriented, while areas like District 4 and the streets around the Pink Church in District 3 offer more authentic local experiences. For Muslim travellers, finding Halal food can be a rewarding quest; look for restaurants advertising Halal certifications or those serving dishes like grilled meats and vegetable stir-fries, which are often naturally compliant.

The affordability of dining in Ho Chi Minh City is a significant draw for international visitors. Street food can be enjoyed for as little as USD 1-3 per meal, offering incredible value. Mid-range restaurants typically charge between USD 5-15 per person, while upscale dining experiences can range from USD 20 upwards. This pricing structure provides exceptional value compared to what travellers from the US and Europe are accustomed to, making it feasible to explore a wide variety of culinary delights.

When dining in Ho Chi Minh City, understanding local customs enhances the experience. Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for excellent service, usually around 5-10%. Meals are often communal, with dishes shared among diners. It's customary to use chopsticks or a spoon and fork for most dishes. Be adventurous and try local specialties, but always ensure food is cooked fresh and served hot to avoid any stomach upset, a practical tip for all travellers.

Cultural Norms and Staying Safe in Ho Chi Minh City

Navigating the cultural landscape of Ho Chi Minh City requires an awareness of local customs to ensure respectful interactions and a smoother travel experience. While generally welcoming, Vietnamese culture values politeness and respect, especially towards elders. It's common to use both hands when giving or receiving items, and removing shoes before entering someone's home or certain temples is standard practice. Understanding these nuances helps bridge cultural divides and fosters positive connections with locals.

When visiting significant sites like the Vinh Nghiem Temple or the War Remnants Museum, specific etiquette should be observed. Dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees, as a sign of respect. Photography may be restricted in certain areas, so always look for signage or ask permission. Maintain a quiet and respectful demeanor within religious sites and historical museums, acknowledging the solemnity and cultural importance of these locations.

Practical safety in Ho Chi Minh City is generally good, but like any major urban centre, vigilance is advised. Keep valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded markets and on busy streets, to avoid petty theft. For transportation, ride-hailing apps like Grab are widely available, reliable, and offer transparent pricing, making them a preferred choice for many international visitors from the US, Europe, India, and Africa. Always ensure taxis use their meter.

In case of emergencies, the general police number is 113, and ambulance services can be reached at 115. For specific tourist assistance, a dedicated tourist police force may be available. It's advisable for all travellers to have their embassy's contact information readily accessible. For US citizens, the US Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City is the point of contact; for Europeans, their respective embassies in Vietnam; for Indians, the Indian Consulate; and for African nations, their nearest diplomatic mission. Comprehensive travel insurance is highly recommended. book flight
