JR Kyushu History

The Japan Railways Group (JR Group) established JR Kyushu since April 1, 1987. This formation followed the privatization process from the Government Company, the Japanese National Railway (JNR), which finally divided the railroad companies in Japan into six lines under the JR Group's parent.

In particular, a subsidiary of the JR Group operates intercity train mode in Kyushu. In addition, JR Kyushu also operates the JR Kyushu Jet Ferry that connects Fukuoka and Busan in South Korea via the Tsushima Strait. Jet Ferry from JR Kyushu was founded in 1991 and has become one of the most successful side businesses.

After privatization, JR Kyushu makes a business diversification into car sales, fish farms, and mushroom plantations. Since October 2016, JR Kyushu has opened an initial public offering (IPO).

JR Kyushu carries the red logo so it is often called JR Scarlet. The official name is the Kyushu Railway Company or in Japanese reads Kyushu Ryokaku Tetsudo Kabushiki-gaisha (Jeiaru Kyushu). JR Kyushu's headquarter is at 3-25-21 Hakata Ekimae, Hakata-ku, Fukuoka, Japan.
