It is said that the mossy rich forest in the Studio Ghibli film "Princess Mononoke" was inspired by the World Heritage site, Shiratani Unsuikyō of Yakushima in Kagoshima prefecture.

About 20% of the island is designated as such, from the central part of the island where Jomonsugi Cedar is to the western part of the island through which the Seibu Rindo (West Forest Trail) road passes.【Shiratani Unsuikyo Ravine】TAIKOIWA ROCK NEW TRAIL HIKE 4-5 hoursThe TAIKOIWA hike is solid hike that takes you out past the previous two courses and onto Kugurisugi Cedar, Shiratani Mountain Cabin, Nanahonsugi Cedar, Mononoke Forest (named after the animated film Princess Mononoke), Tsujitoge Pass and finished at the destination Taikoiwa Rock.
