My first time in Sawahlunto, I found a homestay that felt like home. The homestay owner was very friendly, like my own mother. The atmosphere was peaceful, and the bedroom and bathroom were spotlessly clean. Don't forget to bring your own towels and toiletries, other than soap and shampoo. I recommend Puncak Polan for the best views, especially if you're on a motorbike. It's 1.8 km from the homestay.
