The area after the volcanic eruption was filled with sulfur and smog, and the high-temperature gas turned the rocks into clay. There was no grass for several kilometers, and it became a barren land. Seeing this desolate scenery, the Japanese couldn't help but feel fear and dare not approach it easily. Reminiscent of the hell scenes depicted in Buddhism, these places are called "hell zones", and the "hot pools" formed are called "hells". There are many hot springs in the Beppu area, and they are basically called hells.
