Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon
This temple was built in 1351 by King U-Thong, who founded the Ayutthaya dynasty. Its striking chedi is 72 meters high. It was built to commemorate King Naresuan's victory in single combat against a Burmese prince in 1592. You can climb the chedi and enjoy the surrounding views. The reclining Buddha statue in the temple grounds and the impressive Buddha statues in the corridors make this a symbolic temple of Ayutthaya.
Wat Phra Si Sanphet
This is the most important temple within the Ayutthaya Royal Palace, with three Sri Lankan-style pagodas. It is the guardian temple where three famous Ayutthaya kings who left their mark on Thai history rest, and is like the Temple of the Emerald Buddha in the Bangkok dynasty. It was destroyed during the Burmese invasion in the 18th century, but was restored after the war, and now only the remains of the pagodas and pillars remain.
Wat Mahathat (Wat Phra Mahathat) is a temple that you've probably seen in guidebooks. It's famous for its impressive wooden Buddha head. The head fell off the body in the mid-1600s and was re-emerged at the base, remaining horizontal, making its current appearance a miracle. It's the most popular temple for tourists in Ayutthaya.
