Colectivos are shared taxis that follow a specific route. Unlike regular taxis that can be hailed anywhere, you must board a colectivo from a designated stop. Chankanaab, located within Chankanaab National Park, is one of the most popular dive sites in Cozumel. Its shallow depth and mild currents make it suitable for beginners. You can dive directly from the shore without needing a boat and see moray eels, toadfish, and various other fish. For experienced divers, Columbia Deep is a must-visit, known for its stunning coral reefs, caverns, and tunnels. Another site for advanced divers is Punta Sur, which has great depth and strong currents and is famous for its underwater cave called the Devil’s Throat.
You can enjoy diving in Cozumel year round, but May to September is considered the best time to dive due to the warm water and good weather. During this period, Cozumel is also less crowded, as most tourists visit the island from December to April. However, keep in mind that there is a high chance of hurricanes from August to October.
Cozumel has three cruise ship ports, and the distance from each port to San Miguel varies. If your ship docks at Punta Langosta, you can easily walk to the city center. However, if your ship docks at the International Cruise Terminal or Puerta Maya, you will be about 5 km from the city center. In these cases, it is recommended to take a taxi to reach downtown, which will take approximately 10 minutes.
When in Cozumel, don't miss the fresh seafood, such as ceviche (seafood marinated in lime) and pescado frito (fried fish)—typically grouper or red snapper. For non-seafood options, try cochinita pibil, a slow-roasted pork dish, and sopa de lima, a refreshing lime soup. For an authentic experience, you can find these delicious dishes at local eateries.
The most common way to travel from Cancún to Cozumel is by a combination of road and ferry. First, take a bus or taxi to Playa del Carmen, a seaside town about an hour's drive from Cancún. From there, you can take a ferry to Cozumel, which takes approximately 45 minutes. Alternatively, there are direct flights from Cancún International Airport to Cozumel International Airport, which take around 20 minutes.
