Camiguin Island Travel Guide: Things to Do, Best Time to Visit, and How to Get There

might be one of the smallest provinces in the Philippines, but it packs in more scenery per square kilometre than islands twice its size. Picture a volcanic landscape dotted with hot springs, waterfalls, and an underwater cemetery, all wrapped around the country's most photographed sandbar, White Island. It's the kind of place where you can go from soaking in a cold spring to snorkelling over a sunken church in the same afternoon.

For Malaysians looking beyond the usual Philippines stops, Camiguin is refreshingly uncrowded. Most visitors fly in via Cebu or Cagayan de Oro, then take a short ferry or flight over. This guide walks through the island's best sights, when to visit, how to get there, and where to stay so your trip is easy to plan from the start.

Where is Camiguin Island?

Camiguin Island is a small island province in the Bohol Sea, just off the northern coast of Mindanao in the Philippines. It is part of the Northern Mindanao region and is accessible by air or sea from mainland Mindanao.

The island is relatively compact, making it possible to explore several major attractions within a few days. Mambajao is the provincial capital and the main base for accommodation, restaurants, transport services, and tourist facilities.

Camiguin is famous for its volcanic origin. The island has several volcanoes and volcanic peaks, including Mount Hibok-Hibok, which contributes to its hot springs, cold springs, waterfalls, and fertile landscapes.

Why Visit Camiguin Island?

Camiguin Island offers a combination of natural attractions that are difficult to find in one destination. Travellers can swim in freshwater pools in the morning, visit a historic sunken cemetery in the afternoon, and relax in a hot spring in the evening.

The island is also less urbanised than major destinations such as Cebu, Boracay, or parts of Palawan. Its quieter atmosphere makes it suitable for couples, families, solo travellers, and visitors who prefer scenic road trips over crowded resort areas.

Another reason to visit is the island’s distinctive landscape. Camiguin’s attractions are shaped by its volcanic history, creating a mix of black-sand beaches, mountain scenery, waterfalls, natural springs, and coastal viewpoints.

Best Things to Do

Camiguin Island has enough attractions for a two- to four-day trip. Most places can be reached by motorbike, tricycle, multicab, or hired vehicle, although some activities require a boat or local guide.

1. Visit White Island Sandbar

White Island is one of Camiguin’s most recognisable attractions. This uninhabited sandbar sits off the coast of Agoho and offers wide views of Camiguin’s mountains and the surrounding sea.

The sandbar changes shape depending on the tide and has no permanent buildings, trees, or accommodation. Visitors usually come for swimming, photography, sunbathing, and views of Mount Hibok-Hibok.

Boat trips to White Island generally depart from the mainland near Agoho. The ride is short, but visitors should bring sun protection, drinking water, and waterproof bags because the sandbar has very little shade or shelter.

2. Swim at Katibawasan Falls

Katibawasan Falls is one of Camiguin’s most popular natural attractions. Water drops from a tall rock face into a pool surrounded by lush vegetation, creating a cool and refreshing setting.

The waterfall is located near Mambajao and is relatively easy to include in a land tour. Visitors can enjoy the scenery, take photographs, or swim where conditions permit. The surrounding area is also suitable for a short nature break away from the coast.

3. Explore Tuasan Falls

Tuasan Falls is another scenic waterfall surrounded by tropical greenery and rocky terrain. Compared with Katibawasan Falls, Tuasan is often associated with a more secluded and nature-oriented atmosphere.

The journey to the waterfall forms part of the experience, with roads passing through rural landscapes and mountain scenery. Visitors should wear suitable footwear because paths and rocks may be slippery, especially after rainfall.

4. Relax at Ardent Hot Spring

Ardent Hot Spring is a popular place to relax after a day of sightseeing. The spring is naturally heated by volcanic activity and features several pools set within a forested area near Mount Hibok-Hibok.

Water temperatures may vary, and the pools can feel especially comfortable in the evening or after outdoor activities. Travellers should check current operating conditions before visiting, as maintenance, weather, or local regulations may affect access.

5. Swim at Sto. Niño Cold Spring

Sto. Niño Cold Spring is known for its clear, cool water and spacious swimming area. It is a popular stop for travellers looking to escape the tropical heat and enjoy a relaxed freshwater swim.

The spring is surrounded by greenery and is often included in Camiguin land-tour itineraries. Bring swimwear, a towel, and dry clothing if you plan to visit several attractions in one day.

6. See the Sunken Cemetery

The Sunken Cemetery is one of Camiguin’s most distinctive historical and coastal landmarks. The site marks a cemetery that was submerged following volcanic activity and coastal changes. A large cross stands offshore as a visible symbol of the site.

Visitors can view the cross from the coast or join a boat trip for a closer perspective, depending on local conditions. The location is particularly atmospheric around sunset, when the surrounding sea and mountains create a dramatic backdrop.

7. Visit the Old Church Ruins

The Old Church Ruins, also known as the Gui-ob Church Ruins, are remnants of a Spanish-era church complex affected by the 1871 volcanic eruption of Mount Vulcan.

The remaining stone walls and arches provide a glimpse into Camiguin’s history and demonstrate the impact of volcanic activity on the island’s communities. The site is an important cultural stop and can usually be visited alongside the Sunken Cemetery.

8. Discover Soda Water Swimming Pool

The Soda Water Swimming Pool is a spring attraction associated with naturally carbonated water. Although the water’s appearance and experience may vary, the site offers a different type of swimming stop from Camiguin’s cold and hot springs.

The attraction’s operating status and water conditions can change, so it is sensible to confirm access locally before including it in a fixed itinerary.

9. Try Local Camiguin Delicacies

Food is another part of the Camiguin experience. The island is known for lanzones, a small tropical fruit that is especially celebrated during the annual Lanzones Festival.

Visitors can also try local seafood, grilled dishes, sweet snacks, and regional Filipino meals at eateries around Mambajao and other coastal communities. If travelling during lanzones season, look for fresh fruit and locally made products.

Best Time to Visit

The ideal travel window for a trip to Camiguin is during the dry season (December to May). These months offer the most stable weather, calmest seas, and optimal road conditions for outdoor sightseeing, coastal tours, and boat crossings to White Island.

The period from February to May brings the warmest beach weather, which is perfect for swimming and snorkelling. The rainy season generally spans from June to November; while the island remains open, afternoon downpours are more common, and sea crossings can occasionally be delayed due to shifting winds.

If you want to see the island at its most vibrant, plan your visit around mid-to-late October to catch the lively street parades and fruit markets of the annual Lanzones Festival.

How to Get to Camiguin Island

For Malaysians, book a flight from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) to Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB) or Laguindingan Airport (CGY) in Cagayan de Oro.

From CEB, travellers can reach Camiguin Island by air (Camiguan Airport) or by travelling overland and taking a ferry. The best route depends on the departure city, schedule, budget, and preferred travel time.

Option 1: Fly to Camiguin Airport

Camiguin Airport serves the island, although flight schedules and routes may be limited compared with larger Philippine airports. Direct flights may operate from selected domestic destinations depending on the current airline schedule.

From Camiguin Airport, travellers can continue to Mambajao or their accommodation by tricycle, motorbike, van, or arranged hotel transfer. A short airport transfer may cost approximately PHP 100–PHP 500 (around RM 8–RM 42), depending on distance, vehicle type, and whether the ride is private.

Flight prices vary significantly by season and booking date. As a general planning estimate, domestic flights may range from PHP 2,000–PHP 6,000 one way (approx. RM 170–RM 510) although fares can be lower during promotions or higher during peak travel periods.

Option 2: Travel via Balingoan Port

One of the most common routes is to travel to Balingoan Port in Misamis Oriental and take a ferry to Benoni Port in Camiguin.

Travellers arriving from Cagayan de Oro can take a bus, van, or private vehicle towards Balingoan. The overland journey commonly takes around two to three hours, depending on traffic and road conditions.

Estimated costs are as follows:

Bus or van from Cagayan de Oro to Balingoan: approximately PHP 200–PHP 350 (around RM 17–RM 30)
Passenger ferry from Balingoan to Benoni: approximately PHP 250–PHP 350 (around RM 21–RM 30), depending on the current fare and passenger category.
Port and terminal charges: approximately PHP 20–PHP 100 (around RM 2–RM 8) depending on applicable fees.

The ferry journey usually takes around one hour to one and a half hours. From Benoni Port, Mambajao is generally reachable by motorbike, tricycle, multicab, van, or hotel transfer.

Option 3: Travel via Jagna, Bohol

Another possible route is to take a ferry from Jagna in Bohol to Balbagon Port in Camiguin. This option may be useful for travellers combining Camiguin with Bohol.

Ferry schedules can be limited and may change due to weather, vessel availability, or seasonal operations. Travellers should check the latest schedule and ticket requirements before relying on this route.

How to Get Around

The easiest way to explore Camiguin is by motorbike, especially for confident riders who want flexibility. Motorbike rental may cost approximately PHP 300–PHP 600 per day (around RM 25–RM 51), excluding fuel and any additional requirements.

Tricycles are useful for short journeys or airport and port transfers. A short ride may cost around PHP 50–PHP 150 (around RM 4–RM 13), while a private tricycle tour can cost more depending on the route, duration, and number of passengers.

For families or groups, a multicab, van, or private vehicle may be more comfortable. A full-day land tour can cost approximately PHP 1,500–PHP 3,500 (around RM 127–RM 297), depending on the vehicle, itinerary, guide, and inclusions.

Boat trips to White Island are usually arranged from the departure area near Agoho. Prices may be charged per boat rather than per person, so travelling with a small group can make the cost more manageable.

Smart Travel Tips for Camiguin Island

A few practical preparations can make a Camiguin trip more comfortable:

Bring cash. Some smaller eateries, transport providers, and rural attractions may not accept cards or digital payments.
Check ferry and flight schedules. Sea routes and flights may be affected by weather, maintenance, or seasonal changes.
Pack sun protection. White Island has very little shade, so bring sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and drinking water.
Wear suitable footwear. Waterfalls, springs, and volcanic sites may have wet or uneven surfaces.
Allow flexibility. Avoid scheduling a flight immediately after a ferry journey if delays could affect your connection.
Respect local rules. Follow swimming restrictions, environmental regulations, and instructions from local guides.
Bring waterproof storage. A dry bag or waterproof pouch is useful for boat trips and waterfall visits.
Book early during festivals. Accommodation and transport can become more limited during major local events.

Day 1: Coastal Attractions and White Island

Begin with a boat trip to White Island in the morning, when the light is often suitable for photography and the heat may be more manageable. After returning to the mainland, have lunch near Agoho or Mambajao.

In the afternoon, visit the Sunken Cemetery and Old Church Ruins. End the day with a relaxed dinner near your accommodation or a sunset stop along the coast.

Day 2: Waterfalls and Springs

Start the day at Katibawasan Falls, followed by Tuasan Falls if road and weather conditions allow. After lunch, visit Sto. Niño Cold Spring for a refreshing swim.

In the late afternoon or evening, relax at Ardent Hot Spring. Check current opening hours and pool conditions before visiting.

Day 3: Local Culture and Flexible Exploration

Use the final day to explore Mambajao, purchase local products, try Camiguin delicacies, or visit another spring or coastal attraction.

If you are travelling during lanzones season, look for local fruit stalls and festival activities. Keep the final day flexible in case boat trips or weather conditions require changes to the earlier itinerary.
