Located in the Shirogane area of Biei, Hokkaido, Shirahige Waterfall drops about 30 metres from cracks in a rocky cliff into the Biei River, which is often called the “Blue River” because of its striking colour.
For travellers from Malaysia, however, getting here requires more planning than a typical weekend waterfall trip. Here's everything to know before adding this Hokkaido waterfall to your itinerary.
Shirahige Waterfall is located in Shirogane, Biei Town, Kamikawa District, Hokkaido, in northern Japan. It's part of the Shirogane Onsen area and is easily combined with other attractions around Biei, particularly the famous Shirogane Blue Pond.
What makes the waterfall unusual is how it forms. Rather than flowing from a conventional river or stream above the cliff, underground water seeps through cracks in the rock and drops into the Biei River below. From the Blue River Bridge, the falling water looks like white strands resembling a beard, which explains the name Shirahige, meaning “white beard.”
Shirahige Waterfall is open year-round, and each season gives the area a different look.
For Malaysian travellers, winter is especially memorable if you're keen to experience Hokkaido's snowy scenery, but you'll need to prepare for icy roads and much colder temperatures.

Getting to Shirahige Waterfall involves two parts, travelling from Malaysia to Japan, then making your way from a nearby Hokkaido transport hub to Biei.
For Malaysian travellers, New Chitose Airport near Sapporo is usually the most practical gateway to Hokkaido.
Malaysian passport holders can generally enter Japan visa-free for tourism for up to 90 days with an ICAO-compliant biometric passport. If your passport does not meet this requirement, check the latest visa rules before travelling.
Your passport should also be valid throughout your stay.
From New Chitose Airport, you'll need to continue towards Biei, either by train and connecting services, rental car, or a planned tour.
If you're travelling independently, Biei is a useful base because several sightseeing attractions are spread around the town and surrounding countryside.
Once you're in Biei, Shirahige Waterfall is around 30 minutes from JR Biei Station by car or bus.
By bus, take a Dohoku Bus from JR Biei Station towards Shirogane Onsen and get off at the Biei Shirogane Onsen bus stop. From there, Shirahige Waterfall is only about a three-minute walk.
For travellers planning to visit several Biei attractions, renting a car can make the itinerary easier.
Biei Tourism Association also operates seasonal sightseeing bus courses that combine Shirahige Waterfall with the Blue Pond and other attractions.

Good news for budget-conscious travellers, Shirahige Waterfall is free to visit and open year-round.
The main viewing area is along the Blue River Bridge, so you don't have to plan around a specific attraction opening time. The waterfall's illumination runs from sunset until 9:00 PM.
A little planning goes a long way when visiting a remote scenic attraction in Hokkaido, especially if this is your first trip to the region.
Since Shirahige Waterfall is part of a broader Biei and Hokkaido itinerary, staying nearby can make it much easier to explore the surrounding attractions at your own pace.

Shirahige Waterfall may only take a short amount of time to visit, but it fits into a much bigger Hokkaido experience. Pair the waterfall with the Blue Pond, explore Biei's famous countryside, soak in a nearby onsen, and spend a night or two in the area instead of treating it as a quick stop from Sapporo.
