Unlike waterfalls that require a long jungle trek, Tegenungan is relatively accessible. However, getting down to the waterfall involves a series of stairs, so it’s worth planning your visit around the weather, time of day, and how long you want to spend there. Here’s a practical guide to help you make the most of your visit.
Tegenungan stands out for its combination of dramatic cascades, green surroundings, and relatively convenient access. The waterfall is around 15 metres high, with water flowing from the Petanu River into the pool below.
From the upper area, you can already get a good view of the waterfall before making your way down. This makes it possible to enjoy the scenery even if you don’t plan to swim or spend a long time at the bottom.
The waterfall is also surrounded by various viewpoints and photo spots, giving visitors plenty to do beyond simply looking at the falls.
Tegenungan Waterfall is currently listed as open daily from 06:30 to 18:30 WITA. The listed entrance fees are:
Fees and operating information can change, so it’s worth checking the latest information before your trip.
For a more comfortable visit, aim for early morning or late afternoon. The listed recommended visiting times are around 07:00 and 16:30 WITA.
Early morning is particularly useful if you want quieter viewpoints and cooler conditions. If you prefer visiting later, arriving around 16:30 gives you time to explore before the attraction closes at 18:30.

Tegenungan Waterfall is located in Kemenuh Village, Sukawati, Gianyar, Bali. It’s around 20–30 minutes by car from central Ubud, depending on traffic and your exact starting point.
You can reach the area by motorbike, car, private driver, or tour. The access road leads to the visitor area, after which you’ll continue on foot down the stairs to the waterfall.
You can keep your visit simple or turn it into a longer stop depending on your travel style.
The pool beneath the waterfall is one of the main attractions. If conditions are suitable and swimming is permitted, you can take a dip or simply enjoy the cool water around the falls.
The waterfall’s strong flow can create slippery and wet conditions, so follow any safety instructions provided on site.
Tegenungan is more than just the waterfall itself. Take some time to appreciate the tropical landscape surrounding the cascades before heading back towards the entrance.
You don’t have to reach the bottom to appreciate Tegenungan. The upper area provides different perspectives of the waterfall and surrounding greenery, while the lower area gives you a closer view of the cascades.
If you’re visiting mainly for photos, arriving earlier can also make it easier to enjoy the viewpoints without large crowds.
You don’t necessarily need half a day just for the waterfall. Your ideal visit depends on whether you’re making a quick stop or want to turn it into part of your Ubud day.
This works if you mainly want to see the waterfall from the viewpoints, take photos, and continue to your next destination. You won’t need to spend much time at the lower section.
Allow around two hours if you want to walk down to the waterfall, spend some time around the natural pool, take photos, and make your way back up.
If you want to turn your waterfall visit into a more leisurely outing, stop by OMMA Day Club or D’Tukad River Club. Both offer spots overlooking the Tegenungan area, making them a convenient place to grab a drink, have a meal, and enjoy the scenery after exploring the waterfall.

If you don’t want your trip to end there, use Tegenungan as a starting point for exploring more of Gianyar and Ubud. Several nearby attractions can easily be added to your itinerary:
Just a short drive from Tegenungan, Blangsinga Waterfall gives you another perspective on Bali’s waterfall scenery. The waterfall is located around 4 km from Tegenungan.
For a different waterfall experience, head to Kanto Lampo, where water flows over a series of natural rock terraces. Its cascading formation creates a very different visual from Tegenungan and is also popular for photography.
For a dose of Balinese history and culture, continue to Goa Gajah in Bedulu. This archaeological site features an ancient rock-carved cave, bathing area, and surrounding greenery, offering a completely different experience from Tegenungan.
If you’re heading back towards Ubud, Ubud Monkey Forest makes a natural stop. Also known as Mandala Suci Wenara Wana, the sanctuary combines dense forest, temple complexes, and a habitat for Balinese long-tailed macaques.
Sukawati Art Market is a practical stop after Tegenungan, with Indonesia Travel noting that it is only around 3.6 km from the waterfall. Browse local handicrafts, artwork, textiles, and souvenirs before continuing your Bali itinerary.
