If you’re looking for a rewarding rainforest adventure in Sabah, Langanan Waterfall is worth adding to your itinerary. Located in the Poring area of Kinabalu Park, this impressive waterfall drops more than 120 metres, making it the highest waterfall in Poring and one of Sabah’s tallest.
Reaching the falls requires a challenging trek through tropical rainforest, with Kipungit Waterfall and the Bat Cave along the way. The long hike, lush surroundings, and spectacular cascade make Langanan Waterfall a memorable experience for nature lovers and adventure seekers.
Langanan Waterfall is located in the Poring Hot Springs area of Kinabalu Park, near Ranau in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. The trail starts near the Poring Hot Springs entrance and stretches approximately 3.4 kilometres through the forest before reaching the waterfall.
The hike takes around two hours each way, although your actual time will depend on your fitness level, weather, and trail conditions. Along the route, you’ll encounter Kipungit Waterfall about 15 minutes from the entrance and the Bat Cave roughly 30 minutes into the walk.
Because the trail is inside the Poring area, you can also combine your waterfall trip with the hot springs and other attractions nearby. Note that the Poring Canopy Walkway is currently temporarily closed for maintenance, according to Sabah Parks.

Getting to Langanan Waterfall involves two stages: travelling to Poring Hot Springs and then completing the jungle trek. Poring Hot Springs is around 40 kilometres from Ranau, while the waterfall itself can only be reached on foot.
Driving is one of the most convenient ways to reach the trailhead because the road takes you directly to the Poring Hot Springs parking area, although you cannot drive to Langanan Waterfall itself. From Kota Kinabalu, travel toward Tamparuli, continue through the mountain roads toward Kundasang and Ranau, and then follow the signs to Poring Hot Springs.
The main roads are paved, but you should expect winding sections, steep gradients, fog, and sudden rain, particularly around the mountain areas. Once you park at Poring, the remainder of the journey is entirely on foot.
If you’re not driving, you can travel from Kota Kinabalu to Ranau by long-distance bus or other regional transport. The journey generally takes around two to three hours, depending on traffic and mountain road conditions.
From Ranau, Poring Hot Springs is another approximately 40-kilometre journey. Local minibuses may operate between Ranau and Poring, but schedules can be limited, so arranging a private transfer or local taxi can make the journey easier.
Allow roughly 3.4 kilometers each way, or around 7 kilometers or more for the complete outing depending on the route you take and additional walking around Poring. The trail starts near the hot spring facilities, passes Kipungit Waterfall, continues toward the Bat Cave, and then becomes increasingly rugged and steep. Sabah Parks
Give yourself enough daylight for the return journey rather than treating the waterfall as a quick sightseeing stop. Good hiking shoes, drinking water, snacks, insect protection, and rain protection are especially useful on this rainforest route.
Start your Langanan Waterfall hike as early as possible, ideally around the park's 8:00 AM opening time. An early departure gives you cooler temperatures, better daylight, and more flexibility if the trail takes longer than expected.
The trail can be visited throughout the year, but rain can make the ground muddy, slippery, and more difficult to navigate. Wet conditions can also increase the presence of leeches, so consider bringing leech socks, insect repellent, and suitable hiking shoes.
Rain can make the waterfall look even more powerful, but safety should come first. If heavy rain causes streams to rise or the trail becomes unsafe, follow the advice of park staff rather than continuing.

Langanan Waterfall offers more than a viewpoint at the end of the trail. The surrounding rainforest gives you plenty to see and experience along the way.
The main attraction is the trek itself. Walk through dense lowland rainforest, bamboo areas, and lush vegetation while listening for birds and other wildlife.
Kipungit Waterfall is an easy early stop on the route. At around 10 metres high, it offers a chance to take photos and rest before continuing towards Langanan.
The Bat Cave is located along the trail to Langanan and is approximately 30 minutes from the Poring entrance. It provides another interesting natural landmark during the hike.
Once you reach Langanan, take time to enjoy the scenery and the cool surroundings. If conditions are safe and swimming is permitted, the natural pools can be a refreshing place to cool down.
Keep your eyes open for colourful butterflies, orchids, pitcher plants, birds, and other rainforest species. Avoid touching plants or disturbing wildlife so the natural environment remains protected.
Staying near Poring or Ranau allows you to start the hike early without spending too much time traveling to the trailhead. Here are three options covering different locations and budgets.
