Lasir Waterfall: A Guide to One of Tasik Kenyir’s Most Scenic Escapes

Some waterfalls are reached by following a jungle trail. Lasir Waterfall asks you to do something rather different: cross a vast lake before the rainforest finally comes into view. Located in Tasik Kenyir, Hulu Terengganu, this spectacular multi-tiered waterfall rises around 152 metres (500 feet) and is one of the area's best-known natural attractions.

The journey to the falls is an experience in itself. Tucked 16 kilometers (10 miles) deep into the reservoir from the Pengkalan Gawi Jetty, reaching Lasir requires a thrilling 30-minute speedboat ride, turning a simple waterfall outing into a full-scale lake-and-canopy adventure.

What Makes Lasir Waterfall Special?

Lasir Waterfall stands out for more than its height. Its combination of cascading water, rainforest surroundings and easy access by boat makes it one of the key natural attractions around Tasik Kenyir.

1. A 152 Metres Multi-Level Waterfall

Lasir Waterfall reaches up to 152 metres (500 feet), with water flowing down several levels. This tiered formation gives the waterfall its distinctive appearance and creates natural pools along the different levels.

2. Natural Pools for Cooling Off

The cascading water forms natural pools around the waterfall, making the area appealing for visitors who want to cool down and enjoy the surroundings. Take care around wet and slippery rocks, particularly after rainfall.

3. Lush Tropical Rainforest Setting

Dense greenery surrounds the waterfall, creating a peaceful contrast with the open waters of Tasik Kenyir. The forested setting at Lasir is suitable for enjoying nature and its tranquil atmosphere.

4. A Scenic Boat Journey to the Waterfall

Reaching Lasir is part of the experience. The waterfall is about 16 km from Pengkalan Gawi Jetty and takes around 30 minutes by speedboat, giving visitors a chance to enjoy the scenery of Tasik Kenyir along the way.

5. Photography Opportunities

The combination of cascading water, forest and lake scenery makes Lasir a natural spot for photography. The nearby Lasir campsite also specifically lists photography among its suitable activities.

6. A Base for Outdoor Activities

Visitors looking to spend more time in nature can combine a waterfall visit with activities such as trekking, recreation, and fishing. The nearby Lasir campsite has nine camping sites with an estimated capacity of 36 people.

7. One of Tasik Kenyir’s Most Recognised Waterfalls

Lasir is the most famous waterfall in Tasik Kenyir, making it one of the area's better-known nature attractions.

How to Get to Lasir Waterfall?

There is no road that takes you directly to the base of Lasir Waterfall. The normal approach is by boat from the Pengkalan Gawi area.

Step 1: Make Your Way to Pengkalan Gawi Jetty

Pengkalan Gawi is one of the main gateways to Tasik Kenyir and is the practical starting point for boat excursions to Lasir. If you are driving from Kuala Terengganu, continue towards Hulu Terengganu and follow the road towards Tasik Kenyir.

Step 2: Arrange Your Boat Transportation

You have two main choices when looking for a boat at the pier:

- Private Charter Speedboat: You can charter an independent day-trip speedboat package for roughly RM 400 to RM 450 per boat (accommodating up to 9 guests). This covers a round-trip journey, a dedicated 1-to-2-hour stopover at the falls, and passenger life jackets.

- Shared Public Standard Boats: If you are traveling solo or as a couple, you can ask local boatmen to pool you with other travelers. This option costs between RM 40 to RM 80 per person.

Important Tip: Shared tourist boats operate reliably only on weekends, school terms, and public holidays. If you show up on a quiet weekday, you may face long delays waiting for enough passengers to fill the boat, or find that no shared services are running at all.

Step 3: Cross Tasik Kenyir

The boat journey is an attraction in itself. Instead of watching the landscape gradually change along a road, you will pass across open lake water surrounded by forested hills and islands.

Step 4: Arrive at Lasir Waterfall

Once you reach the waterfall, you can spend time around the base, enjoy the surrounding greenery and, when conditions are suitable, take a dip in the natural pools.

Things to Do at Lasir Waterfall

Lasir works well for travellers who want more than a quick waterfall photograph. Once you have made the boat journey, there are several ways to spend your time.

1. Swim in the Natural Pools

The waterfall forms pools at different levels, and the area around its base is a popular place to cool off. Only enter the water when local conditions make it safe, particularly after heavy rain when currents can become stronger.

2. Enjoy a Picnic by the Rainforest

The combination of falling water, forest shade, and lake scenery creates a natural picnic setting. If your boat operator allows it, bring food and drinks for a relaxed stop.

3. Take Photographs

The multi-tiered structure gives you several angles to photograph the waterfall. The surrounding rainforest also makes the boat approach part of the visual experience.

4. Try Jungle Exploration

Lasir is associated with trekking and outdoor exploration around Tasik Kenyir. Camping and jungle trekking among the activities available around the lake, including areas around Lasir.

5. Pair with an Island-Hopping Lake Tour

Rather than heading straight back to the jetty, coordinate with your boat pilot to build a multi-stop itinerary across Tasik Kenyir. The massive reservoir is highly famous for its native freshwater fishing, ancient stalactite caves (Gua Bewah), the protected wild fish at the Kelah Sanctuary, and neighboring cascades like Saok Waterfall.

Lasir Waterfall Opening Hours and Entrance Fee

Lasir Waterfall is currently open daily from 7.00am to 6.00pm.

While there is no expensive gate admission fee collected right at the waterfall pier, you must settle basic forestry entry logistics before departing. A standard entry permit to the Tasik Kenyir forest zone costs RM 1 per person, which can be secured directly at the Pengkalan Gawi Jetty.

The primary cost of your trip will center on your custom speedboat arrangements. For reference, one current Visit Kenyir speedboat package costs RM 418 for a two-hour trip to one destination, including Lasir Waterfall. The boat accommodates up to nine guests and includes life jackets and safety buoys.

Because private boat rates can depend on group size, duration, and itinerary, confirm the latest price before booking.

How Long Should You Spend at Lasir Waterfall?

A basic Lasir outing can fit into a half-day, particularly if you arrange a speedboat trip that focuses on the waterfall. One current operator package, for example, is built around a two-hour boat excursion with a Lasir stop.

However, travellers coming from Kuala Lumpur, Kuala Terengganu or other parts of Malaysia may want to give Tasik Kenyir more time. Staying overnight allows you to combine Lasir with other lake attractions rather than rushing through several destinations in a single day.

For families and larger groups, a longer itinerary can also make the boat cost more worthwhile because the expense may be shared among several passengers.

Where to Stay Near Lasir Waterfall

Lasir itself does not have a conventional cluster of hotels beside the waterfall because it is located across Tasik Kenyir. For an easier trip, look around Pengkalan Gawi and Tasik Kenyir if you want to minimise the journey to the jetty, or stay in Kuala Berang for a wider choice of accommodation.

1. The Serai Cottage Boutique Hotel

The Serai Cottage Boutique Hotel is in Kuala Berang and is a practical option if you prefer staying in town before or after your Tasik Kenyir trip since the Pengkalan Gawi Jetty is a straightforward 40-to-45-minute drive away. The property has an outdoor swimming pool, free Wi-Fi, parking, and a 24-hour reception. Room rates are around RM 170+ to RM 230+ per night.

2. Hotel O Selesa Inn

Hotel O Selesa Inn is another Kuala Berang option, featuring air-conditioning, Wi-Fi, parking, family rooms, and non-smoking rooms. Pengkalan Gawi Jetty is also a roughly 45-minute drive from the hotel. Room rates are around RM 80+ to RM 110+ per night.
