Tucked off the coast of Terengganu on Malaysia's east coast, this island beach has quietly built a reputation as one of Southeast Asia's best-kept secrets, even though it's been drawing snorkellers and honeymooners for decades. 

The water here is so clear that on a good day, you can spot fish swimming metres below the surface without even putting your goggles on. What makes Redang genuinely special isn't just the scenery, it's how untouched it still feels. 

There are no big shopping malls, no traffic jams, and no nightlife strips. Just beach, jungle, and sea, with a handful of resorts scattered along the shoreline. 

Redang isn't a one-beach island, it's a cluster of bays and coves each with their own personality. Here's what's worth putting on your list.

This is the main stretch most resorts sit along, and it's exactly what it sounds like: a long, wide sweep of soft white sand backed by coconut trees. It's ideal for a lazy afternoon swim or just watching the sunset with a cold drink in hand.

One of the island's most protected spots, this bay is a nesting ground for green and hawksbill turtles. Access is limited to preserve the habitat, but guided visits during nesting season are unforgettable.

Most ferries, resorts, and boat operators shut down or scale back operations during the north-east monsoon (roughly November to February), when the sea becomes too rough for safe crossings.

There's no strict daily "opening time" for the beach itself, but ferry departures typically run from around 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM, so your access to the island is really governed by boat schedules rather than gate hours.

Marine Park Entrance Fee: RM 5 per person (Malaysian citizens, adult), RM 2 (children below 12 years/senior above 60 years), collected at the jetty or by your resort upon arrival, since Redang falls within the Terengganu Marine Park.

Boat Transfer Fare: Not included in the marine park fee. Public ferries from Merang or Shahbandar jetty cost roughly RM 55 - RM 100 return per adult, with private charters costing more.

Getting to Redang takes a bit more planning than your average beach day, mostly because it's an island with no bridge or car access, but that's part of what keeps it peaceful.

Redang sits about 45 km off the coast of Terengganu. Most travellers fly into Sultan Mahmud Airport in Kuala Terengganu, then take a taxi to the departure point. Merang Jetty is roughly 30 km (a 35-minute drive) from the airport, while the Kuala Terengganu jetties are just 12 km (a 15-minute drive) away. 

The sea crossing takes about 45 minutes via speedboat from Merang, or 1.5 to 2 hours via public ferry from Kuala Terengganu (Shahbandar or Taman Tamadun Islam Jetty). 

If you want to bypass the boat transfer entirely, Berjaya Air operates premium direct flights to Redang Airport's own airstrip, departing from Subang Airport in Kuala Lumpur and Seletar Airport in Singapore.

The sweet spot is between March and September, when the sea is calm, visibility underwater is at its best, and most resorts are fully operational. Avoid the monsoon months of November to February, when heavy swells shut down ferry services and many resorts close entirely. 

If you want quieter beaches and better rates, aim for weekdays outside Malaysian school holidays.

A little preparation goes a long way on an island with limited shops and no pharmacy on every corner.

1. Book your resort and transfer together. Most resorts bundle boat transfers into their package. It's usually cheaper and far less stressful than arranging ferries separately, especially during peak season when tickets sell out fast.

2. Bring reef-safe sunscreen. Redang's coral reefs are protected, and regular sunscreen can harm marine life. Pack a reef-safe version to do your bit for conservation.

3. Carry cash. ATMs are scarce on the island, and not every stall or boat operator accepts cards. Bring enough ringgit to cover meals, entrance fees, and souvenirs.
