Sungai Petani is Kedah's second-largest city and one of those genuinely underrated Malaysian towns that rewards visitors who venture off the main tourist trail. Located roughly midway between Penang and Alor Setar, SP (as it is locally known) combines a well-preserved Art Deco town centre, a revitalised riverfront, a thriving night market scene, a scenic hiking mountain, and local food that earns genuine enthusiasm from people who know it. Here are ten things to do in Sungai Petani.

The most photographed landmark in town, the Sungai Petani Clock Tower was built in 1936 to commemorate King George V's Silver Jubilee. The structure is a fine example of Art Deco design with a concrete and granolithic finish topped by a golden dome — quite unlike any other clock tower in Malaysia. Located at 916, Jalan Ibrahim, the tower is open 24 hours and free to visit. It is at its most atmospheric in the early morning before the surrounding streets fill with traffic.
The revitalised riverfront at 192 Jalan Mawar 3/2, Riverfront City, Taman Pekan Baru is one of the best-executed urban renewal projects in northern Malaysia. Colonial-style buildings have been restored and repurposed as cafes, restaurants, and boutique shops along the river's edge. Open daily from 10 AM to 10 PM and free to explore, the promenade is particularly pleasant in the evening when the river lighting comes on and the cafes fill up with locals.
Located on Jalan Sungai Layar, this beautiful mosque features green domes, elegant minarets, and intricate interior detailing including patterned tile work and stained glass windows. Open to respectful visitors outside prayer times from 5 AM to 10 PM, it is one of the finest contemporary mosques in Kedah.
At 1,217 metres, Gunung Jerai (Mount Jerai) offers sweeping panoramic views of the surrounding lowlands, lush rainforest, rolling hills, and on clear days, the Strait of Malacca. The mountain is approximately 25 kilometres northeast of Sungai Petani and hikes typically take 4 to 6 hours depending on the chosen trail. A small entrance fee applies for access to the forest reserve. This is one of the most rewarding half-day hikes in northern Malaysia.
A peaceful public park in the heart of Sungai Petani with a large lake, jogging paths, a children's playground, and a small horseback riding area. The park is open from 4 PM to 9 PM daily and is free to enter — a good spot for a relaxed late-afternoon outing.
Find the best hotels in Sungai Petani for a comfortable overnight base in Kedah:
Held every Wednesday and Saturday evening along the main street of Sungai Petani, the night market is one of the best-attended in Kedah. Vendors sell local street food, fresh produce, clothing, and household goods, with occasional live entertainment including musical performances and street acts. Free to browse and a genuinely authentic experience of daily Malaysian market culture.
A famous Hindu temple at 551, Jalan Kuala Ketil dedicated to Lord Murugan, known for its beautiful Indo-Dravidian architecture, intricate carvings, and colourful deity statues. Open daily from 6:30 AM to 12 PM and 6 PM to 9 PM, and free to visit. The temple is most spectacular during Thaipusam when it hosts one of the larger kavadi processions in Kedah.
Sungai Petani has a strong claim to being the home of genuine fish head curry, and local restaurants along Jalan Kawal Bukit serve the dish in the traditional style: a large clay pot of spiced gravy with a whole fish head, accompanying vegetables, and the choice of roti or rice. Budget around RM20 to RM30 per person. Open Saturday to Thursday, 9 AM to 5 PM at restaurants along 236F Kg Kepala Bukit Mukim.
Established in 1922, the Sungai Petani Golf Club is one of the oldest golf courses in Kedah, with a 9-hole layout on well-maintained grass greens. Green fees run from RM30 to RM80. For shopping, Amanjaya Mall at Jalan Badlishah in Bandar Amanjaya is the main modern retail destination in SP, open daily from around 10:30 AM with extended weekend hours.
