Don’t you find it interesting seeing those solo travellers exploring the world with so much excitement and passion? Is it something you wish you could do or you should do? If you ask us, the answer to both is a big fat “YES”. Believe it or not, travelling alone is not as daunting as it sounds for both men and women.

Tokyo is hyping up now with its tourism efforts pushing in high gear, so it will be the perfect destination for you to embark on your first journey as a solo traveller. Are you ready?

Why Tokyo?

Why not Tokyo? Am I right? Japan itself is one of the most amazing countries to travel to. Heck, the majority of Malaysians have Japan on their bucket list. We may not have data to back that up, but let’s just take our word for it this time around.

Tokyo is like an advanced futuristic city that we often see in movies or television shows, except this is reality! There are a lot of wonderful places to explore in Tokyo, and not to mention everything is so convenient in terms of getting around, which makes it even better for you to be resourceful as a solo traveller without putting yourself in unpredictable circumstances.

Other than that, the whole visa process and COVID-19 special requirements to travel to Japan is very straightforward, and some would say not as complicated compared to those of European countries or the States. This helps prepare to get all the documentation sorted out without having to go through hours of panic attacks before entering the country.

How to Fly to Japan?

This might scare a lot of first-timers, but don’t be; it will work out if you know what you’re looking for. For transportation, the key areas you need to take into consideration are time and budget. Do you want to go big on the journey, or do you want to go big once you’ve arrived there?

If you are going for the former, Japan Airlines, Singapore Airlines and All Nippon Airways are some airlines offering mega cool First-Class seats to Japan. You will be amazed by the First-Class facilities you will get on your flight to Japan. You will be starting the trip right from the get-go.

If the latter is more of your style, go with low-cost carriers such as Air Asia X, Batik Air, China Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Scoot or Vietnam Airlines. The price of tickets for those airlines ranges from MYR 1,000+ to MYR 2,000+.

Where to Stay in Tokyo?

For solo travellers, the main thing to take into consideration when it comes to picking your place to stay is distance and convenience. What we meant by distance is in line with security in this sense.

When you are travelling alone, the best place to stay is one that is closest to either the major population area, the embassy or the safety forces such as police station, fire station and whatnot. It is also important to ensure you have the convenience of transportation, attractions or supply stores from where you are staying.

Safety tips are important regardless of whether you are travelling solo or with a companion. Still, in cases where you are travelling alone in a foreign country, it is as important as where you keep your passports at all times. Below are short lists of the safety tips we have for our explorers:

1.
Never keep your trip to yourselves - Share your itinerary and movement with your closest company back home;
2.
Do plenty of research - Have a safety net whenever you arrive at a destination by taking notes of where the significant places will be;
3.
Get insured - Travel insurance is important even when you are travelling alone, so don’t miss this before making your move;
4.
Keep your valuables in check - Your items, such as passport, visa, wallet, etc, are important to keep in check every time before and after you are done with your day;
5.
Always have a Plan C, D and E - Things can go south in multiple different ways, especially if weather, politics and other unexpected circumstances happen; thus, it is best to have various plans to accommodate your plan.

Travelling alone can be scary, especially if it’s your first time doing so, but the amount of experience and memories you gain from taking that leap is unimaginable. The key to a successful and safe journey as a solo traveller is plenty of homework about the destination and plan. Once you start, you will always come back for more.
