If you are looking for a quiet beach escape away from the crowds, Turtle Beach on Perhentian Besar (Terengganu) is a spot you will instantly fall in love with. Tucked away on the northern side of the island, this lovely bay welcomes you with powdery white sand, bright turquoise water, and a peaceful atmosphere.

To help you plan your trip, here is a simple guide on what you can do, where you can stay, and how to get there.

Why You Should Visit Turtle Beach

Turtle Beach is located on the northern coast of Perhentian Besar in Terengganu, Malaysia. Depending on where you start your day on the island, getting here is a quick 10 to 15-minute boat ride by water taxi from main spots like Long Beach or Coral Bay.

If you prefer a bit of adventure, you can also rent a clear kayak and paddle your way here in about 20 to 30 minutes.

It is a great place to spend a quiet afternoon if you want a break from the crowded beaches. During the day, you can swim in the crystal-clear water, snorkel alongside wild sea turtles, or simply unwind on the soft white sand.

How to Get to Turtle Beach

Getting to Turtle Beach is fairly simple once you know the main route. Here is how you can reach the beach step-by-step:

1. Head to Kota Bharu or Kuala Besut

The nearest major city with an airport is Kota Bharu. From Kota Bharu Airport, you can take a 1-hour taxi or Grab drive to Kuala Besut Jetty, the main gateway to the Perhentian Islands. If you are traveling by bus from Kuala Lumpur, you can take a direct overnight bus to Kuala Besut Bus Terminal.

2. Take a Speedboat to Perhentian Island

From Kuala Besut Jetty, buy a ticket for a fast boat to Perhentian Besar. The boat ride takes about 30 to 45 minutes across the open sea. After you arrive at Perhentian Besar, you can easily hire a local water taxi from Long Beach or Coral Bay. The ride to Turtle Beach takes about 10–15 minutes. At this moment, don’t forget to arrange pickup time for your return trip.

Best Time to Visit & Useful Tips

Before heading to Turtle Beach, it helps to know a bit about the weather and timing. Here is a quick guide on when to visit and what to expect:

Best Season (March to October): The ideal time to visit is between April and August when the sea is calm, warm, and crystal clear. This period also overlaps with the sea turtle nesting season, giving you the best chance to spot them in the water.
Operating Hours & Best Time of Day: Technically, the beach is open all day, but water taxis usually operate from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The best time to head over is early in the morning (around 8:30 AM to 11:00 AM). The water is at its clearest, the sun is not too hot, and you can enjoy the beach before it’s getting crowded.

Travel Fees & Water Taxi Fares

To help you budget your trip, here is a quick breakdown of the estimated costs you will encounter along the way:

Mainland Boat Transfer (Kuala Besut ↔ Perhentian):

The round-trip speedboat ticket between Kuala Besut Jetty and Perhentian Island costs around RM 70 to RM 80 per adult (around RM 40 for children).
Before boarding the boat at Kuala Besut Jetty, you will need to pay the Marine Park Conservation Fee, which costs RM 5 for Malaysians and RM 30 for non-Malaysians.

Local Water Taxi to Turtle Beach (Island Hopping):

Once on the island, local water taxis are the easiest way to reach Turtle Beach, costing around RM 15 to RM 25 per person one-way from spots like Long Beach, or Coral Bay. But make sure you arrange a return pickup time, as there are no boat stands on the beach.
