Canada demands more paperwork than most destinations Malaysians travel to, but it is one of the most rewarding trips you can make. From Niagara Falls and the skyline of Toronto to the glacial lakes of Banff and the seawall of Vancouver, Canada offers a range of landscapes and experiences that justify the extra preparation. The visitor visa process is straightforward once you know what is required, and with a processing time of around 20 days, it is achievable with reasonable advance planning.
Here is everything Malaysian travellers need to know about applying for a Canadian visitor visa in 2026.
Once your visa is approved, lock in the best fares from Kuala Lumpur to Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, or Montreal on flights on Traveloka and pay in Ringgit with local Malaysian payment methods.

Yes. Malaysian passport holders require a Temporary Resident Visa (also called a visitor visa) to enter Canada. Malaysia is not on Canada's visa waiver or eTA programme, meaning a full visa application is required in advance of travel.
One exception applies: Malaysians who have held a valid Canadian visitor visa within the past 10 years may qualify for an eTA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) instead of a full visa when travelling by air. This is a simplified option for experienced Canada travellers. Most Malaysians applying for the first time will need the visitor visa.
| Fee Type | Amount | Notes |
| Government visa application fee | CAD 100 per person | CAD 500 for a family of 5 or more applying together |
| Biometrics fee | CAD 85 per person | CAD 170 for a family applying together |
| VFS Global service fees | Variable | Applicable for document handling, courier, and optional services at the KL centre |
For a single applicant, budget a minimum of CAD 185 (approximately MYR 590 at current rates) in government and biometrics fees alone, before any VFS service charges.
The officer reviewing your application determines the visa validity. Canadian visitor visas are commonly issued for up to 10 years (or until passport expiry, whichever is earlier), with multiple entries allowed. At the port of entry, the immigration officer decides how long you may stay for that particular visit, typically up to 6 months.
| Permitted | Not Permitted |
| Tourism and sightseeing | Working for a Canadian employer |
| Visiting family or friends | Long-term study (short courses under 6 months may be allowed) |
| Attending conferences or business meetings | Accessing government-funded services |
| Transit through Canada | Remaining beyond the period authorised at entry |
Canada does not publish a rigid mandatory document list, but a strong application typically includes all of the following:
Processing times for Malaysian applicants have ranged from 11 to 28 days in recent months. Apply at least 8 weeks before your travel date to allow time for the biometrics appointment, processing, and passport submission. Do not book non-refundable travel until the visa is in hand.
Once your visa is confirmed, find the best-rated hotels in Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, and Calgary with hotels on Traveloka, from mid-range city stays to landmark luxury properties.
Toronto is Canada's largest city and the main entry point for most international flights from Asia. The CN Tower remains the centrepiece of the skyline and offers a glass floor observation deck with views across Lake Ontario. The distillery district, Kensington Market, and the St. Lawrence Market reflect the city's multicultural character. Niagara Falls is a 90-minute drive from downtown Toronto and one of the most visited natural wonders in the world, best experienced on the Canadian side where the Horseshoe Falls can be seen face-on from the boat tour.
Vancouver consistently ranks among the most liveable cities in the world, set between the Pacific Ocean and the Coast Mountains. Stanley Park, a 400-hectare old-growth forest peninsula within walking distance of downtown, is the centrepiece. The Vancouver Aquarium, Capilano Suspension Bridge, and Granville Island Public Market fill a weekend easily. Whistler, a world-class ski resort, is a 2-hour drive north and accessible year-round for hiking and outdoor activities.
Banff National Park and Jasper National Park in Alberta contain some of the most photographed landscapes on earth. Lake Louise, with its turquoise glacial water and the Fairmont Chateau framing the backdrop, is a highlight. The Icefields Parkway connecting Banff and Jasper is widely regarded as one of the great scenic drives in the world. Calgary is the gateway city for flights from Asia to the Rockies.
Montreal is the cultural heartbeat of French Canada, with a food scene, festival calendar, and underground city that make it one of North America's most distinctive urban destinations. Quebec City, a two-hour drive east, is the only walled city in North America and feels more like a European old town than anywhere else on the continent.
Book your Canada experiences before you fly, from CN Tower tickets and Niagara Falls boat tours to Vancouver Aquarium entry and city sightseeing tours, with activities on Traveloka to skip queues and secure the best rates.
Canada's climate varies dramatically by region and season. June to August is the most comfortable time to visit Toronto and Vancouver, with temperatures between 20°C and 30°C and long daylight hours. The Canadian Rockies are at their best from July to September. Winter (December to March) brings heavy snowfall and temperatures well below zero in most cities except coastal Vancouver, but it is the ideal time for skiing in Whistler and Banff. Pack accordingly regardless of season, as mornings and evenings are cool even in summer.
Halal dining options have expanded significantly in Canadian cities. Toronto, in particular, has one of the largest and most diverse Muslim communities in North America, with halal-certified restaurants covering every cuisine from South Asian to Middle Eastern, Lebanese, and Malaysian. Vancouver and Montreal also have well-established halal dining scenes. Supermarkets in all major cities stock halal-labelled products.
The currency is the Canadian Dollar (CAD). Tipping is a standard part of the service culture in Canada: 15 to 20 percent at restaurants and for taxi or rideshare drivers is expected. Some bills include a suggested tip percentage on the payment terminal. Budget for this when planning daily expenses.
Healthcare in Canada is not free for foreign visitors. A routine hospital visit can cost thousands of Canadian dollars without insurance. Comprehensive travel insurance covering medical emergencies, hospitalisation, and medical evacuation is strongly recommended for all trips to Canada.
Toronto and Montreal have extensive subway and bus networks. Vancouver's SkyTrain connects the airport to downtown in 25 minutes. For the Rockies and inter-city travel, renting a car or booking coach transfers gives the most flexibility. Domestic flights between Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, and Montreal are affordable when booked in advance.
