Traveloka Xperience
5 min read

New Zealand is one of the most breathtaking destinations a Malaysian traveller can visit, and getting in has been made deliberately simple. Malaysian passport holders are eligible for the New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA), a fully online pre-travel registration that replaces the traditional visa. There is no embassy visit, no document courier, and no interview. Most approvals come through within minutes.

This guide covers the NZeTA in full, the visitor visa option for longer stays, and what to plan for once you arrive.

With direct and connecting flights from Kuala Lumpur to Auckland, Christchurch, and Queenstown, search for the best fares on flights on Traveloka before you sort your NZeTA.

Do Malaysians Need a Visa for New Zealand?

Yes, but not a traditional visa. Malaysia is on New Zealand's visa waiver list, meaning Malaysians do not need to apply for a visa at an embassy. Instead, you apply for an NZeTA, a digital travel authorisation that is linked electronically to your passport. You must have an approved NZeTA before boarding any flight or ship bound for New Zealand.

NZeTA: What It Is and What It Covers

NZeTA Fees

The NZeTA fee has two components: the authorisation fee and the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL), which supports New Zealand's conservation programmes and tourism infrastructure.

ComponentVia Mobile AppVia Web
NZeTA authorisation feeNZD 17NZD 23
International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL)NZD 100NZD 100
TotalNZD 117NZD 123

Applying through the official mobile app is cheaper than the web form. Both are paid by credit or debit card at time of application.

How to Apply for the NZeTA

1.
Download the official NZeTA app by Immigration New Zealand, or visit the official portal at nzeta.immigration.govt.nz. Do not use third-party websites, which charge much higher fees.
2.
Enter your passport details and personal information.
3.
Take a live photograph of your face using your device camera.
4.
Answer the eligibility questions (health declarations, criminal history).
5.
Pay the NZeTA fee and IVL by card.
6.
Receive your approval by email. The NZeTA is linked electronically to your passport — no need to print or carry a physical document.

The app also allows you to apply for up to 10 people in a single session, which is useful for family trips.

Processing Time

Most NZeTAs are approved instantly. Some applications take up to 72 hours if additional checks are required. Apply well before your departure date and do not finalise any non-refundable bookings until you have received approval.

Visitor Visa: For Stays Longer Than 3 Months

If you need to stay in New Zealand beyond 3 months — to visit extended family, recover from surgery, or take a longer break — the Visitor Visa is the right option. This requires a formal application through Immigration New Zealand's online portal.

What to Do in New Zealand

New Zealand divides naturally into two main islands, each with a completely different character. Most travellers spend time on both.

North Island

Auckland is the arrival point for most international flights. It is New Zealand's largest city, built across a narrow isthmus with harbours on both sides, and a launching point for day trips to the Waiheke Island vineyards and the Bay of Islands.

Rotorua sits on top of one of the most geothermally active zones in the world. Geysers, boiling mud pools, and natural hot springs define the landscape. Rotorua is also the centre of Maori culture in New Zealand, with living cultural performances and traditional hangi meals.

Hobbiton and Waitomo are day-trip classics from Auckland. The Hobbiton Movie Set in Matamata is the actual filming location from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. Waitomo's glowworm caves offer one of the most otherworldly natural experiences in the country, with thousands of bioluminescent larvae lighting the cave ceilings like a night sky.

South Island

Queenstown is the adventure capital of the Southern Hemisphere. Bungy jumping, skydiving, jet boating, white-water rafting, and winter skiing are all based here, set against the backdrop of Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables mountain range. The food and wine scene has grown significantly in recent years.

Milford Sound is widely considered one of the most dramatic fjords in the world. A cruise through the sheer rock walls, past Mitre Peak and multi-tiered waterfalls, is among the most iconic experiences New Zealand offers. The drive from Queenstown through Fiordland National Park is itself a highlight.

Christchurch is the South Island's main city and the gateway to the Canterbury Plains and the Southern Alps. The city has been extensively rebuilt after the 2011 earthquake and has emerged as one of New Zealand's most interesting urban environments.

What to Know Before You Go

Biosecurity

New Zealand has some of the strictest biosecurity laws in the world. All food, plant material, and animal products must be declared on your arrival card — this includes fresh fruit, nuts, seeds, honey, wooden items, and soil on hiking boots. Undeclared items can result in fines of up to NZD 400 on the spot, and deliberate smuggling carries penalties of up to NZD 100,000. Declaring something you are unsure about never results in a penalty; failing to declare does.

Financial Requirements at the Border

Immigration officers can ask to verify that you have sufficient funds for your stay. The guideline is NZD 1,000 per month (or NZD 400 per month if accommodation is pre-paid). Having a bank statement or card accessible is advisable.

Currency

The currency is the New Zealand Dollar (NZD). Credit and debit cards are accepted almost everywhere. EFTPOS (cashless payment) is the default in most shops. Malaysian bank cards work at NZ ATMs, though international transaction fees apply.

Best Time to Visit

New Zealand's seasons are opposite to Malaysia's. December to February is peak summer, with long days, warm temperatures, and the busiest tourist crowds. March to May (autumn) and September to November (spring) offer pleasant weather with fewer visitors. June to August is ski season in the South Island, ideal if you are targeting Queenstown and the alpine resorts. Book accommodation and popular activities well in advance for the December to February period.

Getting Around

New Zealand's public transport outside of cities is limited. Renting a car gives the most flexibility, especially on the South Island where the most iconic landscapes require driving through remote routes. An international driving permit is not required for Malaysian licence holders for short stays, but confirm this with the rental company before booking.
