Attention all travelers! Prepare to adjust your budgets as airport tax rates are set to increase starting June 1st for all departures. This announcement comes with significant implications for those planning trips, particularly for those flying within the ASEAN region. Let's delve into the details of these changes and what they mean for travelers.

What’s Changing?

Effective from June 1st, 2024, airport tax rates for all departures will see an increase. This means that regardless of your destination or the airline you’re flying with, you can expect to pay more when departing from any Malaysian airport.

Impact on ASEAN Travelers

Among the most notable changes are those affecting travelers flying within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Previously, the airport tax for such flights stood at RM35. However, under the new rates, passengers departing from KLIA1 will now be subject to a RM70 tax, while those departing from KLIA2 will see an increase to RM50.

Notes to Consider:

Transfer Passengers: It's important to note that these changes do not affect Malaysian travelers directly, as the revised rates primarily target individuals who have transit flights through Malaysian airports.

Beyond ASEAN: While there has been significant media coverage suggesting a new RM73 airport tax, it’s essential to clarify that flights beyond the ASEAN region departing from KLIA1 were previously subject to a RM73 tax. Thus, the increase primarily affects ASEAN travelers.

Clarification on Costs: It's important to clear up any misconceptions about the increased rates. The adjustment does not mean an additional RM73 on top of existing costs but rather signifies a general increase in airport taxes. This clarification aims to dispel any confusion among travelers regarding the nature of the increased fees.

Financial Considerations

For travelers accustomed to the previous rates, these increases represent a significant change in travel expenses. It’s essential for individuals and families planning trips, especially frequent flyers and budget-conscious travelers, to account for these adjustments in their travel budgets. Failing to do so could result in unexpected financial strain or the need to reevaluate travel plans altogether.

By doing so, travelers can ensure a smoother and more financially sound journey to their destinations. Happy Traveling!
