Are you already planning for a big travel adventure post coronavirus? While it’s quite hard to imagine what traveling will look like once restrictions lift, we know for sure that things are going to be different. The world is already getting used to the new normal — social distancing, face masks and hand sanitizer everywhere. Our jet-setting dreams will also shift. It’s time to be a better traveler to make a positive impact on the communities in the places we visit and to connect with destinations in meaningful ways. So, when you do start preparing for your next holiday, here are five things to consider.
There’s no better time than now to explore your own city. Malaysians are lucky as we have breathtaking islands to explore, cities to wander and mountains to climb, so when restrictions ease, why not take the chance to truly discover Malaysia, truly Asia? Traveling would be easy too as we have access to trains, buses and even driving your own car. It’s also one of the most environmentally-friendly ways to travel and you can take a spontaneous trip anytime!

Flying would be a hassle once flights start operating regularly again. The long queues and health checks are enough to keep us from flying for a little while. So, here’s the chance for you to finally go on the train rides or long road trips that you’ve always dreamed of. You know what they say, the journey is as important as the destination!
As we become more selective with our travel destinations, this is your chance to see the hidden gems of the world. Places like Raja Ampat in Indonesia (instead of Bali) and the Myvatn Nature Baths (instead of the Blue Lagoon) in Iceland are some prime examples of places for you to escape the crowd to. Seek out these places to enjoy a sense of calm and tranquility.
Wherever you are, make the conscious effort to support the local community. Stay at a boutique hotel run by the locals, eat local food, and join tour groups that benefit the communities. This will help the country’s economy and you’ll also have the opportunity to interact with the locals. This way, you’ll be connected to the places you visit and have a better understanding of their culture. After all, isn’t this why you travel?
Even when restrictions ease, you should still practice personal hygiene. This is the new normal. The World Health Organization has advised travelers who are sick to delay or avoid travel to affected areas, in particular for elderly travelers and people with chronic diseases or underlying health conditions. You should also wash your hands frequently and avoid touching your face. Be sure to carry a hand sanitizer whenever possible so you can practice hand hygiene consistently! WHO also advised that wearing a medical mask is not required if you do not show any symptoms, but if you opt for it, be sure to follow the best practices on how to wear, remove and dispose of them.
